“Interesting and Unusual museum”

Museum of Legends and Traditions (Museo de Tradiciones y Leyendas)

This museum has an unusual setting as it is located in an old prison. Each cell has different artifacts/displays and information. There is also a large number of murals in the museum. Information was available in English as well as Spanish. There was also a knowledgeable English speaking guide available and willing to answer any questions. I felt the museum helped me to gain a deeper understanding of Nicaragua and to make more sense of various cultural things I witnessed in Central America. I feel it is worth the effort to go. It was easy to find, doesn't take up that much time, and the entrance fee was minimal.

I had a lot of fun visiting this museum. The tour guide was excellent and the myths were really fun to learn about. The historical origins of a lot of Nicaraguan customs are also informative and interesting. You learn that the people dealt with oppression and imperialism through humor and dance. It gave me a new perspective on the country and its cultures.

While it is advertised as the museum to see in Leon, it is really an old jail with drawings of torture on the wall and badly made figures representing myths and legends in the cells. The students giving the tours are friendly but don't really know the myths and legends beyond their titles. It is NOT an art museum.

The title of this review may leave some guessing this is a quirky museum to visit. Do not be fooled. It is quite low quality and scatterbrained. The information of each legend and tradition is on photocopied paper. Some of the informative signs are held up with tape, others are laying on the ground in front of the displays they are describing. Some of the displays have nothing to do with legends and traditions. It is all very ill thought out. This museum is housed in a former prison. It all somehow deflates the fairytale/folk feeling this museum is aiming for. And as mentioned, it strays off in a few vague directions.

An english-speaking guide wasn't on hand so we wandered around by ourselves and what a fun experience it was! There is a strange contrast between the grounds and the museum, given the past history as a prison with illustrative references to the torture practices - and then the mythical characters displayed throughout. The characters are all crudely made and very pantomimey in appearance, which kids would love (along with big kids like me), and walking through the rooms can feel a little spooky at times (weird haunting audio, dolls, and sinister past). An interesting day out for sure!

The museum closed at 5pm (Sunday).
