Pros: Beautiful beaches and hiking trails.

Cons: No alcohol, you’ll pay for electric whether you want it or not.

Stopped in for a short one-nighter during the first week of June 2014. Frankly was not expecting any vacancies, maybe something right next to the bathroom, but we lucked out. The layout of the park seemed a bit weird. The visitor center and group areas are separated from the campground by the main road. There is a trail that connects these two areas with about a 30 min hike from one area to the other. One nice point to this fact is that the ‘visitor beach’ is separate from the ‘campers’ beach.’

This happened to be the same weekend as the annual Tin-Can-Tourist Rally. The Tin-Can-Tourists is a camping club with a vast history and camp in vintage tents and campers. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this group. It was actually a delight to be able to see so many vintage campers and tents in one area. The group did seem to cause an influx of visitors into the campground on the day of their open house, but most visitors were gone by dinnertime.

The ‘ALCOHOL PROHIBITED’ notes everywhere seemed a bit unnecessary. I understand that state parks are intended to be for the enjoyment of everyone. It also makes sense that the park would not want to be liable for some drunk to light himself (or herself) on fire. However, preventing a responsible person the opportunity to have a glass of wine with a steak dinner or crack open a nice cold Michigan brew by the side of the campfire after a long relaxing day at the beach seems excessive. If this is a deal breaker, I suggest looking at the DNR's website for Alcohol friendly alternatives.

This place is the perfect campground for a weekend family vacation. If you’re expecting a secluded getaway, this is not your place. On the other hand if you’re looking for a short weekend getaway to the beach and hiding your alcohol in a red plastic cup by the fire, look no further than P.J. Hoffmaster!

Very nice private beach within campground. Close to grand haven and Muskegon. Decent amenities can be crowded. Very beautiful and relaxing area of south west Michigan.

The main beach area is not very big and I can imagine it would be crowded on weekends. We went there on a weekday and it was not busy and we were easily able to find a secluded spot away from the main beach. The water was very cold as you might expect in early June but a few people went for a swim anyway. There are some picnic tables and plenty of trees for shade near the large parking lot. The restrooms were clean but why no soap to wash hands? I would visit again (and bring a bottle of hand soap with me).
