“Unfortunately a disappointment”
Reviewed 4 October 2013 via mobile

We stayed one night at villa st Simon at the end of September and unfortunately didn't have a great time. There was no one to answer the door for us even though we arrived well within the check in times and calling the mobile number on the door we were told to go to an Art gallery around the corner to pick up our key. We were then shown in to our room and again we quite disappointed. The villa itself is quite charming and quirky but the room was a bit shabby and worst of all very hot so we couldn't sleep all night. The bathroom is dated and the water in the shower actually stopped a few times while we were taking a shower. Host were friendly but it just wasn't enough to make this stay enjoyable. To make matters worse, our car which was parked overnight in the street in front of the villa, has been dented all over by falling conkers, shame we had not been warned about it!

Staying at Villa St Simon is one of the most unique accommodation experience I have ever had (and I have travelled a lot)

The B & B is one so central to a small little village/town so walking distance to restaurants, cafes, historical sites, and vineyards! So the car can stay (for free) parked the whole time you are there

The Rooms are large and every requirement is catered for. And most importantly kept to a very high standard of cleanliness.

But as in many other reviews, its the people that really make it shine
Les and his team are a wealth of information, nothing is too much trouble for them, and most willing to help.

I best liked that there were events planned every day (almost) and you had the flexibility to chose what ever tour you wished to do, and being hosted by Les, was a better way of seeing the Chateauxs rather than doing them on your own, you certainly learned a lot with Les.

You even have the flexibility of having breakfast or not, and like other social events Villa St Simon Blaye organise you don't have to lock yourself in (We chose not to have breakfast on the Wednesday, so that we could buy the fresh produce from the 5 min walk, markets and have a breakfast picnic at the Citidine)

To sum up, don't hesitate when trying to decide where to stay! Its an experience that you don't want to miss out on!

We travelled to Blaye with another couple and booked the three bedroom apartment for three nights. The apartment exceeded our expectations. The rooms are spacious and modern and very well equipped. It made our stay pleasurable. We especially enjoyed the wine tasting session with Leslie Kellan. We have been to other wine tasting courses but the hour and half with Leslie gave us information that we had not received anywhere else. I highly recommend Villa St. Simon to anyone interested in accommodation in the area.

We stayed in Villa St Simon for the second time in August en route to the Languedoc region. I have stayed in many Hotels in Blaye in the past, before Les and Clarissa opened Villa St Simon. They really have raised the bar - warm welcome, great location in the town, very comfortable bed and the added bonus of a kitchen where you can make a coffee or prepare a snack. Breakfast of fresh viennoiserie and bread a perfect start to the day. Wireless internet all included in the room rate!

I loved every second of staying in this B&B. The people there looked after my every need and provided tons of useful information on things to do in the area. The place itself is without doubt the best hotel I've ever stayed in. I stayed for 2 nights in Sep13 and have already booked to go back for a week in May14. Can't wait!

After reading all the wonderful reviews, I booked a room here and was really disappointed. I mistakenly thought it was located in a rural area around the vineyards. It is not, it is a townhouse in the city of Blaye. The day we got there it was pouring rain and it was cold (August!). We knocked on the front door and stood there in the rain for a while but no one responded. So we walked to a nearby restaurant to try to dry out and warm up. We later were told they only book you in between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm. We finally got into our room, which was really quite lovely (except for the stark four-bulb 'chandelier' in the ceiling, a shade for each bulb would have been nice). We were on the second floor and found a very convenient kitchen was available to the guests. We could also chose a bottle of wine from the selection in the breakfast room and it would be billed to our room. The evening was cool so we could leave the large, tall windows open for a wonderful breeze. Well, that could have been possible except for the kids yelling and screaming in the street below our window while splashing in the water puddle left by the rain storm. Then when the sun went down the little kids went in and the boom boxes came out. The noise was unbelievable. It was very late before things quieted down. Then at about 6:00 in the morning the street cleaners with their leaf blowers and the trash trucks started down the street and made enough noise to wake the dead. There is no air conditioning so in the summer you have to leave the windows open for air and turn on the table fans, but the noise from the street doesn't allow you to keep the windows open. In the morning you come down to the breakfast room which is really a lovely room. Breakfast is very limited. Bread, a pastry here or there, orange juice, fruit and yogurt. There may have been some other items available but I didn't notice any, maybe I was too tired from lack of sleep. I must tell you, the proprietors were absolutely the most accommodating people you will ever meet. We told them where we were heading and they called some wineries along our route and scheduled tastings and tours for us. I thought they were very kind for doing that. We renamed the town of Blaye to Blah. The only thing we found of interest was Ford Medoc. This is up on the hill about a block from the Villa St. Simon. The fort has been nicely restored to accommodate shops and restaurants. At the very top is a Logis Hotel & Restaurant. If you go into the restaurant you can walk out to the terrace around the swimming pool, sit down at a table and enjoy a drink while watching the sun set. That was the highlight of my stay in Blaye. Would I stay there again? No, I wouldn't even stop in Blaye again.

Room Tip: Try to get one facing the front street, not the back street. If you are going in the summer then tr...

We are always grateful for reviews, as they are very valuable to enable us to improve our service and provide correct information for future guests and would therefore like to correct some inaccuracies in our Florida guest's review:

1 The nearest vineyard is a 5 minute walk from the villa, and Blaye is a rural town not a city. We are not sure how much closer to a vineyard, the reviewer, wanted to be.

2 The breakfast is exactly the same as the one, that more than 100 experienced reviewers rave about.

3 It states clearly in our website and in our correspondence that check in is between 4pm and 8pm as we are not an hotel, but a boutique B&B. We are flexible, if guests request a different time for check in by prior arrangement.

4 While we are clearly not responsible for the weather, it seems that the reviewer arrived in less than ideal weather conditions, and this seems to have colored her stay.

While we cannot be all things to all people, we like our guests to have the best possible experience, and are pleased that this review is in the 1% minority. Villa St Simon is a unique experience in an authentic French town, not a glitzy tourist trap, so it is clearly not for those seeking the latter.

If you like authenticity, and are curious to discover the many delights of the town, you will not be disappointed, one rainy day is not enough.

My husband and I spent the first few days of our honeymoon in Blaye for some wine education and tasting. We had such a wonderful time staying here. Our first night we attended Les's wine debunking class and it was great. Les is very knowledgeable about wine and Bordeaux, so we learned a good deal from him, but it is his laid back, friendly personality that made the class so much fun. The second day we booked a tour through the Villa to the Medoc region with Thomas (our guide). We got to visit a few chateaux, learned a lot, and got to taste some nice bordeaux wine. It was really well done. The Villa itself is completely charming and cozy. The rooms are beautiful (we stayed in Rouselle). The breakfast is simple but delicious and really hits the spot. The location is good, close to some really nice restaurants, and the ferry that takes you across the Gironde is a quick walk away. Also very close to the Citadel, which is a nice place to visit to learn some Blaye history or have a picnic. If we ever get a chance to go back to Blaye, I would definitely stay here again. The owners and staff are so warm and welcoming. By the time we left they felt more like friends. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Bordeaux.
