“Nice place, very friendly, good location”
Reviewed 12 September 2012 via mobile

ContrfriendlyWeary to other reviews, The owner was very friendly & spoke good English, if she happens not to be there, her elderly parents do not speak English. Complimentary bottle of wine was a pleasant gesture & also help yourself tea, coffee making facilities incl free chilled bottled water. The location was good, close to the fortress, the estuary, restaurants & bars. Free wifi. Free On street parking but limited.Breakfast was very basic. Large bath but over the tap shower so not practical for stand up shower. No air conditioning & the fan made no impact to the very humid conditions during the night which, for me, made for an uncomfortable sleeping experience.

Be warned that the owners speak no English BUT they run a fabulous operation - immaculately clean and a communal area where you help yourself to a well stocked continental breakfast (deliciously fresh bread and croissants with all the trimmings plus other bits and pieces) and a small kitchen area where you can help yourselves to hot drinks and most importantly chill wine and beers in the fridge! You get a complimentary bottle of wine on arrival which is fabulous too. Outside shady courtyard area with tables and chairs. Real charm and character to the building and the room we had had a corner bath which was divine! Thoroughly recommended as a base for exploring and walking distance to the ferry across to Lamarque. Parking in the 'village' is free. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Think there are only 5 rooms in total and think they're very similar.

Clean and remodeled, this palace-like structure is said to have date back to Napoleon’s building of the Citadel (now a major tourist attraction). Beyond its rich historical past, this Inn is centrally located in the heart of Cote de Blaye’s ancient neighborhood, a five minute walk from the picturesque Gironde river with its famed Citadel, restaurants, parks, and shops. Built on a small hill, the streets are circular and curved, the better, to dodge the arrows and bullets of invading forces of the past. Indeed, walk the empty curving streets at midnight and you will feel yourself to be on a movie set – or perhaps reliving a past life.

Rooms are clean and functional with private baths, white provincial furniture with gold trim, and a television. Luxury appears in the form of an extra deep, triangular bathtub with shiny brass fixtures that makes you wish you brought some perfumed bubble powder. A continental breakfast is included which is served in the sunny central interior with red walls overlooking the private, walled garden below.

To date, rooms start around ninety Euros. In addition to breakfast the rate also includes maid service and, I sense, advice on restaurants and directions if you happen to speak French. During our visit, we were the only guests on the first night, so I was rather surprised to see two other guests at breakfast the second morning. If we spoke French, it could have been a good opportunity to make friends or at the very least, compare notes on wineries and attractions.

With its pretty garden and statuary, one can envision that in summer, it is quite a nice place to open a book and pretend you are an aristocrat from the distant past.
