We stayed here as part of a 4 day cycling tour. Fantastic setting, very comfortable rooms,a most welcome swimming pool (temperature now fine ignore other reviews)
Dinner served on the terrace and although the quality of the food is good, the menu is somewhat limited.
A superb place to stay if you want a few days of peace and quiet ,or as we did use it as a resting place for those tired legs after a days cycling.

We stayed here for one night on a recent cycle trip. The setting was fabulous as was in a rural setting. It had a great swimming pool which was great after a days cycling and the meal we had that night under the stars on the terrace was delicious. Our room was huge.

We happened to stay at the Villa Romaine purely by chance as the keys to our rental villa were missing and were really impressed by what we found. The setting is idyllic - the converted farmhouses are beautifully set around an italian style courtyard with a wonderful looking pool and ponds with floating water lillies.
The hosts were very helpful and the service was excellent. We are a family of 4 with children aged 2 and 5. We stayed in the family suite (300 euros per night) which was huge with 2 bedrooms,a living area, dining area and kitchen area. It was wonderfully appointed and supremely comfortable. The highlight of our stay has to be the dinner which was just fastastic and excellent value- the best food we tasted during our 3 week holiday in france.
In terms of improvement I agree with some of the other reviewers- the pool looks inviting but is very cold -some pool heating would easily sort out this problem. Also the kichen area in the suite could be better equipped for those travelling with young children- at the moment there is just a fridge and sink - some basic cutlery/crockery and an electric kettle and toaster and possibly a microwave would really make it complete. We didn't have breakfast here as it didn't seem good value for money-shame as the kitchen does produce some excellent food. If you fancy a bit of affordable luxury I would definitely recommend a stay here.

I was very impressed by the Villa Romaine. We stayed there purely by chance as it was an assigned hotel on a cycling holiday in the region . Some of the criticisms made by other reviewers are fair - the pool is very cold and a bit of heating would be very welcome. Also the hotel isn't set up at all for people who want to relax by the pool during the day as there is no food available and the one time we did find someone to order a drink from it never arrived. There is definitely an opening there for the hotel to cash in by offering a fuller service.
However, in contrast to a previous reviewer, we were thoroughly impressed by the food the restaurant was producing in the evening and thought that it was superb value for money. The food easily meets the standard of many posh London restaurants at a fraction of the price. The most expensive set menu was (from memory) €39 which included an amuse bouche, starter, maincourse, cheese course with a green salad salad, dessert, tea/coffee and petit fours. the other set menu was about €10 cheaper and did not include a cheese course. Both menus has 2 choices for each course.
We were astonished that the restaurant wasn't filled with non residents in the evening. Perhaps the restaurant needs to work on its marketing a bit so people know exactly what is on offer. While it was the best food we ate on our holiday it might not be what a family with young children are looking for.

Our family (2 adults, 3 children aged 6 - 12) stayed at this hotel for 1night in early Aug. We had a double luxe and a triple room which were both very spacious if a little dark. The terrace overlooking the swimming pool enjoyed idyllic views of the Dordogne but the swimming pool itself was freezing cold, even middle child and keen swimmer could not stand it for very long!
There is no room service and it was quite difficult to get hold of a drink in the afternoon although there are mini bars in each room.
The food in the restaurant was excellent although the menu was fairly limited and quite expensive. A fussy child would struggle to find something to eat off the menu although the waitress did offer steak hache! Our youngest 2 ended up sharing an adult portion of fish which they both enjoyed. It's worth having coffee for the petit fours!
Our only complaint was the breakfast which was E13.50 each with no reduction for children. One of our children wasn't feeling well and only had a small bowl of cereal, the other two did not have much more but we were still charged for 5 breakfasts. when we pointed out that one of the children had hardly eaten anything at all they knocked E13.50 off the bill but nevertheless we did feel that the breakfast was limited (mainly breads and jam, no cheese or hot food)and very expensive. If we stay here again we will take a carton of milk and a packet of cereal for the children and they can eat it in their room at a saving of E30.50! Overall we had a very pleasant stay and would recommend the hotel and restaurant as a very relaxing if quite expensive place to stay.

If you are looking for a calm stay perfectly located to visit the wonderful Perigord, la Villa romaine is an excellent choice.
Located in the country in the Dorgogne riverside has excellent and spacious rooms with wonderful bathrooms and services. The swimming pool is amazing such as the restaurant where you can taste a fabolous foie poilée.
I really enjoyed my stay there, but be sure when you reserve it to be looking for a CALM hotel in the middle of the country!
