“Jamaican/Italian”
Reviewed 19 June 2013

We liked everything about this visit. It was magnificent and exciting. There wasn't anything that we didn't like about this place. There was even a workers strike when we were there which allows us to visit the entire compound for free. The only thing we had to pay for was the parking.

“A good place for those with historical leanings to visit when it's raining!”
Reviewed 18 April 2013

The scriptorial is a well laid out museum built around the illuminated manuscripts preserved from the abbey of Mont St Michel.
Much of the museum is given over to an exposition on the production of manuscripts in medieval times and includes exhibitions of some of the equipment used in the process. This covers things like types of ink and their sources and the production of vellum. There are also some exhibits of general ecclesiastical/ monastic nature including a room full of reliquaries, copes etc. There are also some interesting dioramas covering the development of Avranches through the ages.
There is one (darkened) room where some of the original illuminated texts are on display (brilliant stuff).
As I said in the title, you will need to have a definite interest in things monastic and historical to enjoy this - children may feel that they are being 'educated' - but even so, it beats the Norman rain!

“Interesting museum”
Reviewed 6 November 2012

This museum had all the information on the Avranches area, going back to pre-Roman times. It also had all the information you'd ever need on the formation of Mont Saint Michel, along with samples of manuscripts, how the monks made their own paper, then illustrated the books, then bound them. Located in an ancient building. Has a small gift shop worth going to.

“More interesting than Mont Saint-Michel itself”
Reviewed 5 October 2012

For those, like me, passionate about medieval manuscripts, this museum is a gem. Work your way through the (fairly) interesting history of Avranches to get to the manuscripts themselves. Detailed explanations of the production of manuscripts at the scriptorium of Mont Saint-Michel, together with a darkened room of a few of the actual manuscipts. A well constructed museum in an old fortification. The audio guide in English helps a great deal.

“Fascinating visit”
Reviewed 30 July 2012

This is a hidden gem and not at all what I had expected. It felt a real privilege to see some of the manuscripts and to have them explained so well. A highlight of our trip.
