We had the great pleasure to stay 4 days at La Singlarie, a working organic farm with very comfortable Gites, hosted by Ali and Jamie Stickler, two English folk who have taken refuge from the hustle and bustle of English life to the bucolic bliss of Najac Aveyron and its surrounds. Najac is situated about 2hrs drive/train ride North from Toulouse and getting there requires you either have a hire car or make your way by rail.
The farm itself is a couple of km’s from Najac township easily reached by car or if you have the energy by a leisurely walk, along tree lined lanes and roads. It caters for couples and families, with a variety of animals to entertain the children and laid-back lifestyle for Adults. The Gites, are fully self-contained for cooking, washing and entertaining i.e. BBQ out on the terrace and if you feel like a bit of indulgence Ali, will cook you a superb meal for a reasonable price, served up with best of bonhomie and cheap but good local wines.
The weather in June was high 20’s to low 30’s every day; good enough for us to venture down to the Aveyron river, at Laguepie a quant village with good river access and swimming hole or you could spend half a day in Cordes, a fortified middle ages town situated upon a rocky hillock with great views, checking out the local market, shops and restaurants.
We did several of day trips recommended by Ali and Jamie and were not disappointed by our discoveries from the grand clifftop town of Rocamadour with a church carved into the rock face, medieval streets lined with craft shops and eateries along with spectacular views of the valley and Padriac a small village with a very deep secret; La Gouffre i.e. the Abyss an amazing cave, 90meters plus down by lift/stairs to an underground river, with fully functioning guided boat rides; literally quite out of this world. These are just a few of the attractions close to La Singlarie or you can just travel and the meandering roads to quaint villages and towns, stop at a local cafe for coffee and delicious pastries and soak up the atmosphere and countryside of this beautiful region of France.
The only regret we had was the fact we could only stay for four days which easily could have been a week or more in such a well located and comfortable Gites, situated on a working farm with Ali & Jamie who took genuine interest in making sure we enjoyed our holiday.
We thoroughly enjoyed our fortnight at La Singlarie. The gite is in a stunning location overlooking Najac Village. Although the house was situated on a beautiful organic farm it was also close to many amenities in the surrounding area. We especially enjoyed the swimming pool which is ideal for adults and children and the kayaking on the river. The accommodation suited us perfectly with plenty of room both inside and out. There are opportunities for walking and cycling in the lovely countryside where we saw lots of wildlife. Jamie and Ali, the owners, were very friendly and helpful .
Thoroughly recommend staying in the beautiful gite if you are looking to visit this stunning part of France. The view from the bedroom and living area is incredible, overlooking Najac and the castle. The wood burning stove was a life saver on the third and fourth evening as the weather had cooled. The gesture from Jamie and his wife of a great bottle of red wine on arrival was very welcomed!! The gite was clean and well presented and would suggest you book now if you are considering it!!!
this was our second time here,we really enjoyed our stay.the gite is lovely, roomy and light, with a view that is breathtaking.,perfect for exploring all the amazing architecture and countryside in a very relaxed setting.
Had a wonderful few days staying in one of the gites on the farm. Amazing scenery and wonderful walks in the area.
Ali and Jamie are very welcoming and the food prepared by Ali was fantastic.
The area is pretty much closed up unless you go into the towns but the supermarkets are open. As we went just to chill it wasn't a problem for us.
We have previously visited in the summer with the local markets, local cafes and bars open in Najac. Swimming in the local river and kayaks to hire means there is something for everyone.
The farm is great for children as they can join in at feeding time but a wonderful place to relax with a glass of wine, sitting outside with the view of Najac.
Perfect location for a relaxing holiday. The gite was homely and clean with great views over Najac and the surrounding countryside. Perfectly located to explore the beautiful sights of the Averyon valley. Ali and Jamie were great hosts, there if we needed them (with great suggestions of things to do and where to eat) but we also felt the gite was very private which was a lovely balance. We will definitely be coming back.
