“Rustic fairy tale charm, wonderful cooking, warm helpful hosts”

Anja and Peter made us feel warmly welcome from the minute we arrived at this fairy tale setting in rural Normandy. The cottage we rented (Foines) was very spacious, with a great fireplace and wonderful French windows to let in the outdoors. This is a farm setting that was converted some years ago, so do not expect sleek luxury, but we were provided with everything we needed for a wonderfully relaxing and comfortable stay. Anja is a wonderful cook, making the most delicious dishes, often using products she grows right on the property. Even the breakfast jams were homemade. We spent an extra long weekend, and truly hope to return there for a longer stay. Peter was very helpful, honest and informative when we made our booking. .

“The most restful holiday we have experienced in years in beautiful, tranquil surroundings”
Reviewed 31 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

My family (together with a friend of our daughter's) stayed at La Boursaie, at the beginning of this month and had the most peaceful and relaxing holiday we have had in a number of years. The farmstead is located in stunningly beautiful and tranquil surroundings and the cottage "Les Ouvriers" in which we stayed has an utterly charming, rustic appeal.

Les Ouvriers is set slightly apart from the other cottages which means that, in addition to the large shared garden overlooking the picturesque valley immediately to the rear of the cottage, there is access to a more secluded orchard to the side - an ideal spot for reading, writing or painting/drawing in peace. The large lawned garden provides ample space for outdoor activities and games, and tables and chairs, a swing together with table tennis facilities are also available. Weather wise we were particularly fortunate as it was dry and very warm throughout our stay (with temperatures in the mid to late twenties) which enabled us to make the most of the gardens and sit out into the late evening.

The cottage itself proved adequately spacious in accommodating two adults and three teenage girls - even having just the one bathroom didn't prove to be problematic to the four female members of the party. The three bedrooms (two doubles and one twin single with a travel cot) are suitably equipped with clean, warm bedding and furniture to ensure a comfortable stay. The lounge was roomy enough for five and has a lovely large rustic fireplace which, on a cold evening, would no doubt be very much welcomed as the downstairs did tend to feel a little chilly in the evenings on account of the build of the cottage. The kitchen/diner is large and comfortably seats six plus and, despite there not being a dishwasher (we actually didn't mind doing a bit of washing up for once), is perfectly equipped to facilitate those staying on a self-catering basis. Although there is no washing machine in the cottage there are washing facilities at the farmstead and a washing line in the shared garden means that, weather permitting, it is possible to dry clothes even if you have to wash them by hand (again something that we didn't find a problem on a short term basis).

Although there is a television there is no DVD player at Les Ouvriers and consequently we had to use our portable DVD player which were able to connect using the appropriate cables. There is a portable radio at the cottage which meant that we could listen to France Bleu for a change (anything's better than listening to Chris Evans), but there is no other audio equipment - we just used our own devices. WiFi cannot be accessed from within the cottage and is only accessible on the shared lawn at the centre of the farmstead - something we found to be a blessing rather than a hindrance as it meant that we didn't spend the duration of the holiday talking to the tops of heads!

For those healthy types who are avid hikers or cyclists there are plenty of walks and peaceful country lanes within the immediate location of the farmstead. For the rest of us it has to be said that a car is essential as the local supermarket and amenities are not within practical walking distance. The local supermarket (Intermarche) is located in the nearest town of Livarot and offers a superb range of products, whilst the larger E Leclerc store is slightly further afield in Lisieux. Although we only ventured away from the farmstead very occasionally, we were able to purchase tickets locally in advance in order to take the train into Paris (a train journey of approximately 1 hour 45 minutes from Lisieux), which saved us the hassle of driving and parking. The annual medieval festival at the beautiful museum of Château de Crevecoeur (http://www.chateau-de-crevecoeur.com/en/index.php?page=accueil) proved to be extremely popular with the girls (although this might have had something to do with the armoured knights on horseback competing in jousting tournaments) and is definitely well worth a visit. The local town of Livarot is a relatively small, quiet town with a small selection of shops, cafes and patisseries, whilst the beautiful town of Falaise, birthplace of William the Conqueror, offers a larger selection and the Château de Falaise presents wonderful views of the town. Further afield are the D-Day landing beaches, military cemeteries and museums of Normandy, and at a drive of approximately two hours is the beautiful island of Mont Saint-Michel with its stunning 11th century Romanesque Abbey.

Although we were concerned that the girls would be bored, they seemed to be happily occupied at all times, even our youngest (11) who was highly entertained by the dozen or so friendly feral cats and kittens that adorned the cottage steps from time to time. Despite there being plenty of space for everyone to do their own thing and keep out of each others way, we were able to relax in the knowledge that the girls were never too far away. However, although the gardens are secure and traffic is of no concern, the grounds are large enough to mean that younger children in particular would require supervision.

La Boursaie is an ideal location for a peaceful and relaxing break and, despite being well off the beaten track, also provides an ideal central base from which to explore a beautiful and varied region of Northern France. Our hosts, Peter and Anja, were extremely welcoming and hospitable and made us feel as though nothing was too much trouble. They were very helpful in providing local information and, although they live within the farmstead, we didn't feel at all constricted and were completely at ease. We definitely hope to return to La Boursaie.

“Worked out well in the end”
Reviewed 9 September 2014 for a stay in August 2014

After getting off to a rocky start, we were made to pay 40 eur for the glass of a picture frame which one of us knocked off the wall by accident while she crashed out on a dangerous step on the upper floor, luckily she was unhurt, the rest of the stay proved pleasant.   Peter lent us his gps which was invaluable on the small country lanes.  We drove a lot as the gite  is off the beaten track.  He redeemed himself in my eyes.   Anna's cooking is at treat , the two meals we had, served in her dining room, were  delicious with a varied menu sourced from her own garden and local markets.  Anja is a terrific hostess, very warm and helpful.  The house was charmingly decorated and the electric heaters in three rooms was useful, the fourth bedroom had a heavy quilt which did the trick.   The wifi advertised is available in the garden next to Peters house only,  not convenient  as the weather doesn't often cooperate.  Also there were only two bathrooms, not three as advertised :  in the upstairs one the hand held shower didn't work so bath only, and in the ground floor one, the shower stall door was fixed with tape .  If these little issues are addressed I would highly recommend the gites as a gem, as it is you get what you pay for, still good value for the money.

“Fantastic Retreat in the countryside of Normandie!”
Reviewed 3 September 2014 for a stay in June 2014

Absolutely wonderful spot, and fantastic hosts! I stayed here in early June 2014 for the D-Day Anniversary nearby on the coast. It wasn't ideal for the travel for the events there, but otherwise fantastic! I wish I had had more time to just hang out and relax and enjoy the location! it was idyllic!
I would take a printed out map of directions with you, even if you had a GPS in your vehicle, I found it a bit hard to find the first night, as I was arriving late.
Merci Beaucoup Anja et Peter!!!

“Lovely stay in great guesthouse with lovely owners.”
Reviewed 26 August 2014 for a stay in August 2014

Stayed here for one week with the family, it was a last minute decision and we are all glad we did as it is in a fantastic location with beautiful scenery my son loved all the different types of wildlife and was besotted with all the wild cats and kittens.

Anja and Peter are also great hosts and Anja has a wealth of information on the area and the best places to explore.

“Great base to explore Normandy”
Reviewed 18 August 2014 for a stay in August 2014

Stayed in Le Pressoir for a week in August with husband and four children. The cottage is steeped in history and very pretty and the area is like going back in time with nice views across the valley. Its a great base for exploring Normandy but a car is a must as very rural location. Peter and Anja are wonderful owners and made us feel very welcome and nothing is ever too much trouble for them.

“Very nice stay!”
Reviewed 10 July 2014 for a stay in July 2014

We stayed with Anja and Peter at their beautiful farm in Normandy for three nights. The area is very pretty, and our kids loved to run around the farm, playing with the cats. The rooms are charming and nicely decorated. The beaches to the north is only 45 min away and lots of interesting sights in the area ( cheese factory in Livarot, the castle in Falais, village markets etc) that they gave us tips about. I can highly recommend a stay here.
