“Beautiful View of Lake Michigan”
Reviewed 20 July 2014

The room was nice, had a small balcony so you could view the bay. Clean and comfortable.
the breakfast area is extremely small, too small for the size of the hotel. Breakfast was OK, quite limited. The grounds are very nice. The visit was enhanced by beautiful Petoskey.

Room Tip: Ask for one with direct view of the bay

Out of all the places I have stayed in Michigan, this is my absolute favorite! I love the staff, from the front desk to the housekeepers, they are so nice, friendly, and helpful. Most of them know me by name and go out of their way to greet me and talk to me. It is no wonder they are sold out most of the time.I stay here as often as I can.

Room Tip: The higher the floor, the better the view.

My husband and I visited the Apple Tree Inn this past June. We had stayed there the previous August, and had a very different experience during that visit. We returned because of our first experience there; we will not return again after this last visit. The room we were given during our June stay was really showing its age. A microwave was awkwardly located on the nightstand, a picture had been removed from the wall with the glue or whatever left in its place. The bathroon was very small - we could barely shut the door to get in to use the shower. And the lower end of the mirror over the large bathtub was covered with black. What really got to us was that the swimming pool was hotter than the hot tub when we jumped into it. We complained about it to the front desk, but the problem was not resolved the next day when we went to use it again. The location is still great. But there is a definite difference in the staff from the previous summer, and the place is in need of some renovating.

Room Tip: The room we had on the fourth floor was far worse than the room we had the previous summer on the se...

We stayed for our honeymoon for five days. The breakfast was small and I would rather visit some restaurants for a better meal to start your day. The pool was covered during our stay even though it was indoors. We had to ask the attendant at the desk to pull it back. Also, the location of the pool being right at the entrance of the hotel is a bit invasive if you just wanted to relax in the hottub. I really enjoyed the large rooms and the california king beds! My husband had to pull out the mini-fridge to plug it in. Overall, for the price of $79 a night it was totally worth it. Only about a 45 minute drive up to mackinaw city and it was wonderful.

I have stayed here often and Larry and Karen always made me feel welcome. Booked a room for June 17th. Discovered that it is now owned by the same group that owns the Holiday Inn Express. Rate was higher than the biz rate I used to get. Now 72 hour cancellation policy. Not biz traveler friendly when your plans can change abruptly. May have to find a new preferred place to stay when in Petoskey on business.

All rooms have a balcony or terrace with views of the bay. We booked early and got the room for $89 a night for the third week in June, when it would have been $129 if we had booked the week before. The rooms were big compared to other hotels and included a flat screen, VHS player (funny, but they do have VHS tapes in the lobby), table with chairs, couch, mini fridge and microwave. All of the staff was very friendly. If you'd like to take a seat in the lobby dining area to eat your breakfast (6:30-10am) instead of in your room, I'd suggest to get there early, since after 8:30-9 all the tables will be taken. About a mile away from downtown, take quarters for street parking! Overall, a positive experience and will be our hotel of choice for future trips to Petoskey!

Room Tip: When booking, there is a "quiet room" option. We selected that and got a room on the top f...

Our visit was the night of June 17. As advertised by the Apple Tree Inn, all rooms have a balcony. However our view of the lake was over the top of buildings and a road, plus our room's view was partially obstructed by another bldg. The sliding door opened however we couldn't get the screen to move to cover the opening since it had rusted in place. BEWARE - this motel has just sold so who knows what the new ownership will improve, if anything. The rooms looked as if the bedding was the only thing updated in the last 20 years. The breakfast area consisted of 4 tables in a very small space. The hot waffle was the only redeeming feature of the continental breakfast. I don't plan on visiting Michigan again, however I would investigate a chain across the street that looked newer and sat up higher above the lake than our location at the Apple Tree Inn. The Apple Tree Inn picture on-line must have been 20 years old, and immediately stepping into the lobby we realized we had made an error booking here.
