Insel Haus B&B
Reviewed 27 August 2012

A group of us stayed at Insel Haus this month and had a great experience. Christa and her husband are super hosts, looking after any necessary details. The B&B is huge for being a single house--7800 sft. It was designed as a B&B and is also decorated really nicely. Our bed was very comfortable and breakfast was tasty. I have to be gluten-free and Christa made sure there was enough I could eat at breakfast. All 23 in our group fit in it comfortably. It also has an outdoor room for gatherings as well as the deck. There isn't a whole lot to do on the island, so plan on relaxing. They do have a few bicycles to use.

Room Tip: Talk to Christa about what you need and she will help you get a room that will be a good fit for you...

We (23 of us!) just visited this weekend paradise. It is easy to access from the Cheboygan Ferry; Plaunt Ferry. (Make sure you're early for the Ferry; and make sure to make reservations if taking a car!). It's a short 45 min Ferry ride to Bois Blanc.
We were welcomed with four cars and four people; to take our baggage to the B & B; as we (most of us) were on bikes. The owners did this several times during the day; and we picked up the last of our group ourselves with their Suburban! (As they needed to go to bed to rise to get up to prepare breakfast for all of us!).
The B & B itself is very cool. Lots of antiques, interesting art works. All the rooms are different; and all are nice. It is very clean. We had the entire place to ourselves (a great place for groups, I may add!). It has at least 7 bathrooms I could find! And a couple of 1/2 baths; but only one room was 'ensuite'.
There was plenty of bed/sleeping space in some of the large (and small) 'common' rooms; so the place can sleep up to 28 people. We took 23; and it wasn't crowded at all!
In fact, it was quiet peaceful You could always find a spot to relax/be alone; if desired. It has several balconies, a couple of decks; and the best part: A large gathering room; just off the back of the house. We were able to eat/ and have potluck dinner in this room; very comfortably. The owners have all the tables, chairs, table service, etc.
There was alot of wildlife seen on the property: hummingbirds, wild turkey, deer, Bald eagles, all sorts of hawks, other birds, and woodpeckers, No snakes. We saw alot of other wildlife in our island adventures. We mostly biked the dirt roads to great vistas during the day.
There were three kitchens to our avail. That was helpful with our potluck dinner on Saturday pm.
We even had a permit from the Fire Marshall (obtained by the owners!) to have a fire on Saturday pm, but it was a bit hot; so we just swam in Lake Huron instead! Their bonfire pit is by the Lake.
The food was excellent. Hot and cold choices; even some gluten free items for one in our group. There was fresh fruit/yogurt/meats and cheeses. Juices, hot food (one day a 'mashed' apple pancake; and bacon; the second were Krab/spinach quiches.
The owners (Christa and Shelby; and their daughter Monica) were all very accomodating for our every whim. They went the extra mile all the time. They picked up and Took back our luggage (as we were on bikes) to multiple Ferry dockings. They entertained us with a funny welcome. Christa was gracious enough to show us her Alpaca double knitting pieces. Quite the art show!
The owners are older; and have lived very interesting lives; prior to and during their ownership of this B & B. (See their website for some details). They are in great shape.
They never complained about us leaving a mess (although we are a group that travel, party, dine alot together at B & B's, so know to clean up after ourselves. When I asked if we have left them a mess, I was 'assured' that we hadn't!).
They even let us all check out late on Sunday; so we could enjoy the lovely day and island longer.
We did alot on the island; and I'll likely review the happenings of the island on a separate 'Bois Blanc' review.
One of the best things on this trip was our own 'special' island tour guide, Beth. Whom lives nearby the Insel Haus. Someone in our group knew her, and she has a place up there. She provided us with biking (and some hiking) maps; and was our private tour guide for both days on the island. She was invaluable; esp. as there is none of this info found on the Internet (many of us tried to find this info beforehand). She knows the island very well; and is an avid cyclist. She also knows where to hike; and points of Interest. What a godsend she was! If you go, try to sweet-talk her into assisting!! Or, at least, request those maps!!
If you live in Michigan; or just wish to experience one of Michigan's top places to visit/see, I would suggest that you put Bois Blanc FIRST on your list; and stay at the Insel Haus!!

Room Tip: The Heritage room is the only Ensuite room in the house; and it does not have AC. It has high ceili...
