On our recent Memorial Day trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, we stopped for dinner at Jose's Cantina. This is a hidden gem in St. Ignace.

We were greeted and seated quickly. Our waitress was pleasant and knew a lot about the area and the restaurant. The menu provided a broad variety of dishes. Our choice for the evening was their fish tacos. (Their fish tacos are rated the best in Michigan by MLive.com's food critics.) After our order was taken, food arrived quickly and hot. The food was delicious and in conversation with our waitress, we learned that Jose's Cantina was competing for the 2018 Best Mexican Restaurant in Michigan (they are already rated the best in the U.P.!)

Since returning home, we've read that Jose's Cantina finished 5th in the MLive.com competition for best Mexican Restaurant in Michigan. This is now one of our must stop restaurants when traveling north.

Thank you for this wonderful review. We appreciate you taking time letting others know we are a gem in the north. And we did place 5th among some very strong competitors, we feel we’re #1 for loving what we do. We look forward to your return visit.

I had the pork tamales, my husband had tacos carne asada with the (very, very hot) habanero sauce, and we were both pleasantly surprised. We normally only eat Mexican food at Mexican Village in Detroit. The tamales were a good ratio of masa to filling, and the masa was very light and flavorful. The Very enjoyable. Our waitress Marina was very attentive and the food came out quickly and at great temperature. We also shared a pitcher of Mid Shelf Margaritas (made with Cabo Wabo Anejo) and those were very good as well.

There is nothing wrong with the service, decor, and or atmosphere of this establishment.
However, we did not feel as though the food offered was truly authentic Mexican fare.
We have eaten at dozens of Mexican restaurants around the country, and this one tries hard to be one, but does not overcome its real American roots in my opinion. My beans tasted like they came right out of a store bought can of pinto's with a very light & bland wannabe Mexican seasoning.
Same issue with the rice. The deep fried taco shells looked cute... but only serve to pack on more grease, calories, and fat. If you are looking for a true Mexican eatery I would go elsewhere. If you only care that the food claims to be Mexican....take your chances.

Thank you for your feedback. I assure you it is authentic with the recipes come from our chef's Guadalajara family. Our beans and rice are homemade daily to please our many vegetarian/vegan customers- no meat products are included. We're sorry our crispy tacos were not of your liking. Thanks for giving us a try.

Ordered the enchiladas...they were good...not the best I've ever had but good... however the Traverse City margarita was one of the best I have ever had! Would come back and try the tacos.

Thank you for the good review. Yes the Traverse City cherry margaritas are great. We hope you'll return and try our fish tacos rated #1 in northern Michigan and the UP. Now we were recently voted #5 in the state for serving authentic Mexican food. We're so proud of our chef and his staff achieving this honor.

This restaurant is right on the water’s edge and so the view is GORGEOUS! Really enjoyed my fajitas. They were sizzling hot, veggies cooked well, and tortillas came out hot. The service was prompt and they checked on us several times after we received our food. This restaurant has many gluten free options and the staff is well versed in this area. The owner is starting to implement eco friendly business practices. He is attentive and friendly. We enjoyed our visit.
