“Wonderful stay!”

Very clean, spacious rooms, cheerful and helpful staff, great breakfast (even w/large groups eating at a time!), easy access to everything in the area! Can't wait to go back next year!

The hotel had limited rooms facing the lake. The website said beach access but you have to drive about 3 miles to the beach and there is an $8 admission charge. The rooms were large but very dated. The carpets were stained and our hotel door didn't close properly. The breakfast was okay but they kept running out of food.

St. Joseph is a great little town. My 3 children (ages 9, 7, and 4) loved it - particularly the painted dogs all over town. This hotel was mediocre. The bathroom tile was damaged and a little dirty looking. The free breakfast caused us several problems. We arrived at 9:15 Monday morning. The buffet was supposed to close at 9:30. When we got there there was NOTHING left - no coffee, eggs, muffins, cinnamon rolls, milk. 15 mins before it was scheduled to end, the woman came out and started taking everything back to the kitchen. There were about 10 additional people looking for things to eat. One man asked if there was anymore coffee, and he was told quite simply, "No." I believe there was some confusion because the buffet ends at 10:30 on weekends. We did arrive later than planned (we were still functioning on Chicago time), but if the buffet runs until 9:30 then it should have food until 9:30. Or at least some more accommodating staff at willing to make some more coffee for 10+ people asking for it. The next day we made sure to arrive well before 9:30. Food was not the greatest, byt my kids were happy with the cinnamon rolls. To make matters worse, when I got back home, I discovered the hotel had charged me $350 twice. I called and was told I needed to speak to the manager, who wouldn't be in until Monday. I am still waiting for a call back - so customer service is lacking. However, there are VERY few options for hotels in St. joseph, which is why this hotel is quite popular.

We stayed here over Memorial Day weekend, 2010 and overall, liked our stay. We paid $142/nite, taxes included, with a AAA discount. It also included a decent-sized complimentary breakfast. Our spacious room had 2 full size beds, fridge and microwave. The room was clean and recently updated. Our 3rd floor room faced south, nevertheless, we still had a partial view of the Lake, which was a nice touch. In fact, it appears most rooms, unless they are facing directly east, will have at least a glimpse of the Lake. My biggest complaints about our room (and I would suspect the hotel's rooms in general) is it would have been nice to have queen beds rather than full size (there was plenty of room to accomodate queens) and in this day and age, a modern, flat screen TV would be in order. Mind you, these are nitpicky complaints and really shouldn't influence your decision on whether to stay here.

Although this hotel is a bit on the pricey side, you have to remember it's summer, it's Western Michigan, it's St Joe and it's by the Lake, so you're gonna pay. You'll find it to be generally less expensive than the downtown St Joe hotels, but if price is the main issue driving your decision on where to stay, you might be better off at staying in nearby Stevensville, or near the Interstate in Benton Harbor. Or, if you're looking for a romantic, cozy, kid-free place, this hotel probably isn't for you.

It's location is nice because it overlooks the Lake and it's relatively quiet, HOWEVER, it has its drawbacks: there is no public access to the beaches below the hotel. Also, since it's 2+ miles from downtown/Silver beach, on the outskirts of town, it's not really walkable. So you're pretty much forced to drive, ride a bike (no bike lanes on the highway) or get a ride. And finally, even though it overlooks the Lake, there's a rather large Whirlpool Corp. industrial-type building behind the hotel, thus, the above-mentioned east-facing rooms don't have much of a view. Next door, there is a great looking Mexican restaurant, overlooking the Lake. Can't review it cuz we didn't eat there----maybe next time!

The balmy, indoor pool was nice for our young kids (2 1/2 and 4 year old boys). There's a nice grassy area on the hotel property which is great for relaxation. The breakfast was good---not the best I've ever had, but at least it offered protein (eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy). Staff was friendly and helpful.

In conclusion, this hotel is a decent value for what it is. You get newer, solid Holiday Inn accomodations in a good location and a breakfast too boot!

Our room was huge and a great view with balcony overlooking Lake Michigan (across the road but nothing was blocking our view). Room was very clean and comfortable. A great bargain for a resort area on a holiday weekend!

We have stayed at this Holiday Inn Express several times because there aren't that many options in St Joseph and it has a good location. On our most recent visit, the front desk clerk was cordial and the check-in process was quick and efficient. We had requested a top floor room facing the lake, which we got. The lake view is nice, but the noise from busy Lakeshore Drive is right outside the window and ruins the effect. Our room was quite large, with a separate seating area, refrigerator, microwave, and coffeemaker. It was relatively clean, but showed some signs of wear. The sliding screen door to our lakeview balcony didn't work properly and the screen was quite damaged...if it had been mosquito season, you wouldn't have wanted that door open. The bathroom was clean, but there were a couple of cracked floor tiles and the wallpaper was starting to peel off in a corner. They also need to update the information book on the desk....it was from 2007 and was falling apart.

In the morning, we headed down to the breakfast room where they have a free self-service buffet. They had an adequate, if unexciting, array of breakfast items....muffins, donuts, cinnamon rolls, cereal, yogurt, juices, coffee, etc. The 3 coffee urns were nearly empty, and as we struggled to get some coffee, one of the breakfast room attendants came out from the back to grab a donut for herself. She did not offer any assistance or even a greeting. And why does everything have to be served in or on styrofoam??? With plastic utensils? Not exactly ecofriendly. At least a real coffee cup would be nice.....nothing ruins the taste of coffee like a styrofoam container! (Although the "coffee" that was served was weak and flavorless.)

All in all, this hotel is ok. It's clean, reliable, and in a good location. If we had paid $80-$90, it would be a deal. However, the price for our room was $179 per night. We could have gotten a cheaper standard room online for $129, but there was no guarantee of bed size or smoking preference on their Internet "special." Even so, $129 would have been a pretty high price for what you get here.
