we stayed on hector from armada boat hire for a week from 27/6 for 7 nights. Rue showed us the ropes how to steer stop rules of the cut/canal. We made a few mistakes the first day but all great fun, Hector the boat is fantastic well equipped, and maintained, spotless and comfortable. Think its important to ensure you hire from reputable hirers. The best week ever so many friendly people. The barley mow pub at newbold is great very good carvery, and laundry service, lovely staff good atmosphere. The volunteers at hillmorton locks were really helpful and patient.

“The Best”

I've hired boats about twenty times and I have to say I've never had service like this. Nothing is too much bother for Rue and Claire. We've only hired one of their boats - Jack - but it is perfect for two people. Both their boats have a stove right by the back door, which makes them perfect for cruising outside the summer months. We love to head north, skirting round the edge of Coventry before heading up the Ashby Canal. The Ashby is lock free and gets more and more rural the further you go. It's also full of water voles. The beer at the Dog & Hedgehog in Dadlington is superb. Go, get away from it all and slow right down with the one you love.

“So much to see and do - yet relaxing at the same time”
Reviewed 6 November 2015 for a stay in October 2015

Following on from a fantastic holiday on Hector in May 2014 we decided to see the autumn colours in October. We have experience of traditional 48ft long canal boats and the French Penichettes and Hector wins in the personality stakes on all counts. Very small (and bijoux) he is easy to navigate on the narrowest of canals and locks. Unlike the bigger boats this boat is easier to stop if you find yourself in any difficulty. We took Hector on the Oxford Canal to Fenny Compton in May 2014 and the Grand Union to Stoke Bruerne in October - the latter gives an opportunity to experience two long tunnels and a number of locks. The surrounding area is beautiful as we have found in both spring and autumn. Claire’s communication to book Hector is first class and Rue’s instruction and ease of conversation makes learning how to work and navigate Hector extremely easy. The whole experience is very friendly from pick up to drop off. When we had a minor issue one evening Rue (and Clare) were with us within an hour or so and we were fixed. There are lots of friendly comments and smiles from both canal people and passers-by etc as we went by. Remember to bring a camera - so much to photograph - landscape, flora and fauna, Both times on Hector we did not want to hand him back on our final morning and can’t wait to be enjoying Hector again in the near future.

“Excellent break. Very relaxing.”

We were first time narrow boaters and a little apprehensive about our little trip so the first thing to mention is the warm welcome we received from Rue and Claire when we arrived at the boat yard. There was no waiting around or filling in stacks of paper work before we were allowed on the boat. We loaded the boat up and Rue took us on a tutorial and advised us the best route to take on our 3 day trip in order to get the boat back in time. As it was bank holiday Monday on our return we were allowed a couple of extra hours to get back.
Armada have 2 boats, Jack and Hector. We were on Jack. Jack sleeps 2 people and dogs are allowed.
Jack is lovely looking from the outside and very well set out on the inside. Jack is very well maintained and extremely well equipped. There is a fridge with a freezer compartment, an oven with a grill, a job, kettle, plenty of cutlery, crockery and pans. Jack also has a TV, DVD player, radio and cards and dominoes. We received an inventory of what Jack had so we were able to do our shopping before arriving at the boat yard and cooked every meal on the boat. Although there are plenty of pubs along the North Oxford canal if you don't want to cook.
The bed was surprisingly comfortable as it was the seating converted in to the bed, and it was easy to make up. Although Jack is only a small boat there is ample space for 2 people and a medium sized dog! The only downside is the size of the shower which was a bit of a squeeze, but can't be helped because of the size of the boat.
The country side around the canal was very pretty and there seeemd to be plenty to do along the way, although we chose to spend most of the time on Jack because we loved it so much. We had a mixture of good and bad weather but don't let the rain put you off as narrow boating was even fun in the rain!
Returning the boat was straight forward and we were offered discount for booking again. All in all we had a very pleasant, relaxing experience with Armada Boat Hire and would definitely book with them again.
