We were disappointed that a neighboring eatery was closed and so we peeked in the window of this place and looked at the menu, esp. the daily specials. Not really BBQ aficionados but being hungry we decided to try the day's special, pulled pork sandwich w/chips and share a soup of the day. WOW!! The cook took our order and informed us about the meats available.. The cuisine is northeastern Kentucky and we started with Burgoo, a soup of many of the meats and all the vegetables in the kitchen, usually cooked in large outdoor cauldrons over an open fire for hours. Additionally this soup is smoked, the whole pot, for some many hours. It was so thick the ingredients mounded over the rim of the cup. SO GOOD!! And so affordable.. His unassuming personality and informative demeanor made the visit even better. We sampled some brisket and loved the sandwiches and the sauces. Highly recommended...

There was this super long wait at a place around the corner and down the street. We were heading back to our rental when we saw the breakfast and open signs. We went in, was seated immediately. The menu offered something for all of us. I ordered scrambled w/ spinach, cheese and tomato. One friend ordered French toast and the other two Eggs Benedict. All just wonderful! Eggs were light and fluffy, the spinach fresh. The Hollandaise sauce won raves, and the French Toast was "delightful". The coffee was fresh and the service impeccable. A truly enjoyable eating experience. Why go anywhere else for a delicious breakfast?

Considering that Saugatuck is not a "Southern" type of city, the Hickory Pit was a nice surprise. They even have a vegetarian section on their menu. I tried the bbq pulled pork and baked beans in a sweet corn bread covering and found it to be tops. You can smell your way to this restaurant. Highly recommended.

In Chicago there is a place called SmoqueBBQ where in my opinion, is the best BBQ outside of Memphis or the Carolinas. I have a new opinion. The Hickory Pit delivers food with the smoke flavor so deep into the meat you won't believe it. The pulled pork was the best but the brisket held its own too. Fresh homemade cornbread and clear coleslaw just made things better. Don't forget to get some of the deviled eggs too, you'll be glad you did!
I'm sorry we didn't order the ribs but we had to save something for the next trip, eh?

Wow! I was NOT expecting a VEGAN menu at a rib shack! Besides the regular meat dishes, they offered some really tasty vegan options, including fantastic smoked baked beans, cornbread, sweet potato fries, cole slaw and pickled cucumber/onion. Also, vegan ribs!! My carnivore boyfriend tried the vegan ribs and loved them. Portion sizes were great and friendly staff, clean restaurant. We loved it and ate there twice!
