We enjoyed a quite and stunningly beautiful walk in this wooded setting where trails lead to the beach. We followed the trails to a spot high on the dues where we sighted a Bald Eagle flying by.

There is about a mile hike to get to the beach with no restrooms. It was a very pretty, wooded hike and a beautiful view. Just be prepared to get some exercise and take some bug spray and water. Use the bathroom before you arrive because there aren't any on site.

The water was chilly but the beach was great. Not a lot of people when we were here which was great, more water for us.

We particularly liked it that you had to walk to the beach and couldn't drive, it was very unspoilt. The walk is not flat and not suitable for the infirm, although I certainly wouldn't class it as hiking. The woods were not what I was expecting for a dunes park (I think the proper dunes must be in a different bit of the park) but the walk was enjoyable and cool. The beach is beautifully sandy and we could have stayed there much longer than we did.

My wife and I made a trip to Saugatuck Dunes State Park two years ago. We always wanted to bring our kids back there. Well, we just did and had a blast! We paid the $9 entrance fee and took the Livingston Trail to the beach. The hike was about a 1.5 mile walk. Our five kids (ages 10, 9, 7, and twin 6 year olds) had no trouble with the hike (only a few "How much longer?" questions :) The beach on Lake Michigan was so private. The closest people were over 200 yards away. The kids enjoyed playing in the sand and water, although the water was too cold to swim. We stayed about 2 hours and walked North on the shore up to the Beach Trail Head. The total distance we hiked was about 3.5 miles. Very peaceful and relaxing few hours!
