“Great spot for a break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 October 2013

We stayed one night on the way back to Chicago. The room was great with a view over the pool to the river. It was really clean but as people have said, could do with a bit of a re-fit. The carpet was very old and the lighting was a bit lacking near the wardrobe. That said for the money and location it was a great stay. The free breakfast is enough to set you up and the staff were good. The pool was lovely but I imagine it is really busy in high season. It is an easy walk into town.

This is not a fancy hotel, but the location is great and the room is a good value. The pool and hot tub are very nice and the hosts are very accommodating. I will stay here again on our next trip to Saugatuck.

This is an older hotel, But clean. Nothing Fancy, but it is right on the water so you get to watch the boats go by on their way out to Lake Michigan. Everything is in walking distance. Great shops, and wonderful restaurants. This hotel has a nice garden and pool, and very friendly staff. We have stayed there twice and would recommend it.

Room Tip: If you only need one queen bed. There are 4 rooms right down by the water. #39, and #40 are great.

Stayed at Ship & Shore August 2013 for a nice long weekend with my honey for our birthdays. We loved it totally! It's very retro, which I love. VERY clean, VERY friendly staff, CLEAN Pool & Jacuzzi, Very Nice continental breakfast. Bathroom was a bit small, but as I said..CLEAN! Lovely garden area to sit and relax or eat breakfast. Nice to walk out the door and be right in the action and exlore downtown Saugatuck. Close to restaurants, Chain Ferry, and beautiful view of Kalamazoo River and all of the NICE boats docking and going past. I loved the retro-ness of it all...kept waiting for Elvis to pop out with his guitar by the pool with some bikini clad, Beaufont-haired ladies! Totally, totally loved it. Pricey but well worth it in my opinion. Location, location, location! Booked for next year!!!! Can't wait!!!!

Room Tip: Ask for 2nd floor room for best view. 2nd floor overlooking Garden is a little more private than 2n...

On the River, watching boats go by, clean rooms, clean pool, garden area to eat a nice, full continental breakfast, relaxing, nice staff, and walk to everything. i have stayed at a couple of places on the river at Saugatuck, and I like the Bayside but you need a 3 night stay, and I like the resort across the river, but it is across the river and once the chain ferry closes, you have a 15 minute drive home. but at the ship and shore, you can walk anywhere, safely. Love the food options in saugatuck, especially marros for their cheesy, garlic rolls, wow, would love an order right now. And walked to the Mason Street Theater for a fun play, not to mention ice cream on the way home. Great little deli with lots of wine and cheese selections 2 doors down. I mean really, this is a great resort town so close to Grand Rapids that it is crazy I don't come here more often. That being said, the Ship and Shore is a perfect location to relax, watch the boats and have a good night sleep. Room is a bit small, but clean, white and fresh decor, except the bathroom which is older decor, but charming. All rooms have a river view and I like the second floor for better viewing. Pool is clean and refreshing right by the water, great for happy hours. I totally feel like Im rambling, but ready to go back in a heartbeat. Even a one night get-a-way is worth it.

Room Tip: Second floor for better view, if a boat is moored to the dock, you wont see the boats go by. I like...

Booked the room with a river view, what we got was a room that reaked of mold that didn't go away for the two days we stayed because we were there for a wedding. The motel was made from concrete block and even though they tried to keep it fresh it is way past its prime. Could get a wifi signal in the room and the desk clerk asked if I could pick it up anywhere else on the property. Really? The hot tub Friday night was filthy with a thick layer of gunk floating on top, completed with dead flying bugs. All this for $190 a night. Did I mention I now have a respiratory infection? Stay here at your own risk! The view of the river is blocked by large powerboats, so get that dream out of your head.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else.

Our second trip to Saugatuck and it was much better staying on this side of the river. Perfect location, nice continental breakfast (included at n/c), lovely pool and hot tub on the water. The resort is older, but they do a nice job and it was far nicer than our lodging last year. The staff are friendly and accommodating. Hope to come back next yr!
