“25 Years and Counting!”
Reviewed 20 June 2013

We have been going to this Inn for almost 25 years now. As we prepare for our trip later this summer, we are looking forward to going back to a place that we consider a second home. The new owners are very nice and are working to tackle updates and the implementation of ideas, to place their own personal stamp on the B&B. Saugatuck and Douglas are great places to visit when looking to get away to a place the is calm, cool and comfortable. We always look forward to our yearly return to Saugatuck and the wonderful Newnham Suncather Inn. B & D

This was a girls weekend trip for us and we stayed at the back soda suite, not in the main part of the house. It was perfect for us! We were on our own with our own entrance to our suite and had sleeping areas, sitting area, and a kitchen. We lounged by the pool with drinks and the owners were very polite and made us feel right at home. The breakfast they served was wonderful as well! The location is also perfect. Right in town close to all shops, eating, and bars/nightlife. Could not have been any better. We had such a great time and will be back again one day!

Room Tip: The soda suite is highly recommended!

Yes, there is a bar next door... but they shut down by 11. We were fairly entertained while some drunk guys sang karaoke. If you are looking for a quiet escape stay in a cottage out by the pool. Everything was very clean and we had a nice experience with the owners. They made small talk and served us our breakfast poolside. Everything other reviewers say about this being the innkeepers home with dogs and kids is right, but that didn't bug us. We enjoyed our stay and will be back.

The noise from the bar next door, mentioned by other reviewers, is really problematic in the rooms in the front of the house. We could not sleep until 2:30 a.m. and chose not to stay a second night. The innkeepers are sympathetic but have no solution. We found the inn very clean and the breakfast good. Didn't feel as welcome as under the previous owners but perhaps we were expecting too much.

We stayed in the Cottage Suite for a girlfriends' getaway. The picture on their web site is a little deceiving - we found the single room to be smaller than anticipated ~ with an uncomfortable sleeper sofa and dated furnishings - quaint is describing it nicely. The older (but adequate) a/c unit was small and on the wall, the tv/dvd was an older model placed on top of a cabinet (not too many cable channels) and the internet access was sporadic. The refrigerator was oddly placed in the bathroom - which did have an adequate shower, but again the linens/towels/rugs could stand to be upgraded.

Two of us shared the queen bed and our third friend slept on the sleeper sofa. Thankfully we had taken along a blow-up twin bed for her to use on top of the sleeper sofa. Otherwise she would have had several nights of miserable sleep as the sofa sleeper had a thin stained mattress and protruding bar. Granted, sleeper sofas are notorious for not being comfortable, but they did charge us an extra $30 per night for the extra person so you'd think they could start making some upgrades.

On the positive side, the heated pool was very nice and clean; the breakfasts were good and the location can't be beat for being close to downtown and shopping. The hosts were friendly but seem to be still learning how to operate a welcoming B&B/tourism establishment. I have worked in the tourism industry for several years and they may want to take some hospitality or customer service training to improve the guest experience. Right now, the inn feels too much of a family home and not a traveler haven.

Also, they may want to reconsider giving their dogs free reign of the establishment - for the most part the dogs behaved well although there were times they barked too much and were too protective of the spaces ~ as is the nature of dogs.

I can't comment on the quality of the inn itself as we stayed in the suite. Other guests staying at the inn seemed to be having a good time. Overall, I'd say the location will keep guests coming to the inn but I will stay next time I'm in Saugatuck at a more modern facility with a more welcoming atmosphere.

We were not welcomed at all. The owner did not even say hello when we walked in, he just showed us our room. In all fairness, the room itself was nice. The problem was, there is a bar literally about 20 feet from the room. They had the band playing really loud. It sounded like we were at the bar. When we asked the owners if they had another room, they said no. The owner said the bar would close the doors at the bar at 10 or 11 p.m. The owner's wife came out and said the same thing. I told her she could have told me when I booked that there was a bar next door. She said that it is not her responsiblility. I should have figured that out myself. Needless to say, we were awake til the band stopped playing around 2: am. They closed the door at the bar, but that sure didn't help much. When we left the next day, I again told her she might have warned us about the bar, but she said it was my reponsiblilty to know that it was next door. I should have looked online and checked out the location. It would be different if she or her husband were nice about it, but they were very unfriendly for no apparent reason. Seriously, no smiles or welcome from the beginning. We won't be back. You might want to check the location online and notice where it is located before you decide to stay there, just like the owner advised me. The other reviews about them not being friendly are sad but true.

First of all-I have stayed at the Suncatcher numerous times over the years. The previous owners were warm, welcoming, and fun to be around. The new owners frankly don't seem to be cut out for this line of work. The Inn is still clean, in a great location, and has good food. But the little things are missing. You don't feel as welcomed any more-more like you are intruding in a family home.

Room Tip: The cottage only-the front holly hobby room is loud! Bar next door has karaoke and bands.
