My husband and I try to avoid chains and patronize owner-operated, mom and pop type hotels, motels and inns. Recently, after a long and pleasurable day in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario we spent time searching for that kind of place that met our standard for cleanliness and charm. We finally gave up and crossed this International Bridge and Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Here we found Plaza Motor Motel. Perfection! It appears to be a totally rehabbed motel from the 1950s or 60s. Smallish rooms with beautiful, high end features. Charming exterior, great decor, fun furniture, granite bathrooms, cool bathroom fixtures, nice bedding and towels, flat screen, wi-fi, details like logo embroidered pillow cases, trompe l'oeil travel trunk on the wall, beautiful gardens with gazebo, and truly helpful and friendly staff. All this for an unbelievably low price. I would go to Sault Ste. Marie just to stay here. One of the nicest places I have ever stayed.
Note: Be aware that the return trip to the US can have delays at the border here. We spent about and hour. Just make sure you have enough gas and your party has all used the bathroom before you get on the International Bridge. There may be a wait!
