“Outstanding venue for a golf weekend”
Reviewed 20 May 2012

Just returned from visiting this place for the 14th year. We have an annual golf outing with 18-20 friends and this place is the perfect venue for our gathering. Greg and his staff have done an outstanding job over the years accommodating our group. The golf course is in fantastic shape, and has been that way for what seems like forever. For us, we are there for three days and we never leave the place. I beg to differ with the food quality reviews from the previous posts. You can get a subpar meal at a great restaurant on any given night. One of the reasons that we return here is the consistency of the quality of the food and the inn overall. We could go to a lot of places to play golf, eat and stay, but I have not yet heard of a better place in Michigan that combines all three of these for a group like ours. We are returning for our 15th visit next year, and I think our loyalty to this place speaks volumes.

Golf course is a special gem. Really unique layout and very fun to play. Waste bunker's, prairie grass, elevation changes. Scenic. Nice range and practice area.

We didn't eat or stay on the property.

My wife and I decided to have our anniversary dinner at HawksHead on September 23, 2011. The staff seemed more intent on the outdoor Pigs Roast than the customers who had reservations and desired to eat off the menu inside. I ordered the Ribeye, which was undercooked with a sauce that tasted like turpentine. The fries that came with it were dry and seasoned to be even drier, as if they were old and cooked the day before. Added to the plate, as if to fill a blank space were dry chinese noodles. The calamari appetizer was pretty much frozen. I ordered my favorite mixed cocktail, being a Manhattan, which came in what could only be described as a slightly oversized shot glass. My wife stated her meal was okay. Having been to some of the best restaurants in Boston, New York, Montreal, Las Vegas, Honolulu, Paris, Newport and Cape Cod to mention a few; I could only rate the evening as a waste of time, which spoiled our anniversary night out.

My wife and I visited the South Haven area and stayed at the Inn at HawksHead in late September. We stayed in Room 8, the Bobby Jones Haven room. HawksHead is a golf course, restaurant and Inn. We were out for the day and returned to the Inn at 10:45PM. The restaurant was closed, the lights off and the front door locked so we used a side door with the code they had provided to us as we were instructed to do As soon as we entered our room the cold hit us. There were no controls for the heating or air conditioning, just vents with cold air pouring out and no apparent way to control them. The outside temperature was in the 40's! We assumed that the Inn had no heat as it is closed in winter. We slept in our clothes as well as putting the extra blanket on the bed. When we went out early the following morning we mentioned the problem to the manager. We explained how cold it was in our room and related that we had a miserable night. She said that she was sorry that we were cold and would turn the heat on. We returned around noon time to check out. The heat was on and our room was then very comfortable. We saw the manager as we were leaving and again mentioned the problem that we had experienced and asked her if she could do something, anything , to help make up for the miserable night we had. She just looked at us so with a blank stare so we suggested a credit against a future visit or a discount coupon to their restaurant. We told her that the amount was not important but rather a gesture to acknowledge that were sorry for the problem. She said that she would have to call someone to discuss this. She excused herself for about 10 minutes. When she returned she told us that the individual that she spoke with told her that it was our own fault because there is a thermostat on the wall in the hallway close to our room and all we had to do was to turn the heat on. Bewildered, we asked her was she saying that each room has a thermostat outside of their door? For some reason she did not want to answer us but we asked again. Finally she said that the thermostat controlled the entire 3rd floor, where our room was along with maybe two others. We told her that we did not see a thermostat on the wall in the hallway and what did she think would cause us to look for one there. She had no answer. Then she said that the person that she spoke to also said that we should have called the posted emergency number and asked why we did not do so. We asked, do you mean the number posted outside on the side door? She said "yes". We told her that we did see an emergency number posted but had no idea if it was for the police, fire department , paramedics or for the owner and, in any event as cold as we were in our room the last thing that we wanted to do was to go out in the cold to look for a number to who knows what. We were calm and courteous in both of our conversations with the manager but apparently that made no difference. We suggest that if you are looking for a place to stay in the South Haven area that you consider somewhere else where hopefully you will be treated with respect and not indifference and somewhere that will take ownership of their problems and not blame them on you.

Upon walking into this inn you immediately realize that this is a special place. It is entirely romantic and well kept. It is not fancy and there are some missing ammenties but it is quaint and perfect for a weekend getaway for couples that already enjoy each other. My boyfriend and I stayed in room 9...it had the most incredible view out of the many windows facing the woods. This time of year is beautiful with all the fall colors. In the morning a light breakfast is served right to your room between 8am and 9am...the strawberry jam is very yummy! All in all we had a delightful time enjoying the sights and just spending time together in this romantic place. Great value! Thank you!

  • Liked — quiet and great views!
  • Disliked — no internet service or cell phone signals!
  • Tips/Secrets — do not expect to use your cell phone much here....reception is TERRIBLE!

Been to the area more than once, this place has the best food and atmosphere around. Loved the menu, we had the whitefish and the lamb. Definitely on our list for the next visit to South Haven.
