“Very relaxing get away, in a beautiful setting.”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

My husband and I have been to the Sand castle Inn twice now. We have enjoyed our stay each time and look forward to going back again soon. The home is very welcoming and clean. The breakfast was great the first stay and alright the next. The location is perfect! Right outside of town with in walking distance to the local shops or a 1/2 block away from lake Michigan. Very relaxing and quiet. We have stayed in the Majestic Room both times and will choose it again in a heart beat. Nice spacious room with a table & two chairs, nice big bed and bathroom along with a big wrap around deck. We will be back and recommend to others!!

The location and outside of this B and B is great. The inside is only OK. But our problem had to do with the fact that (1) the owner does not live in town, nor on the premises. If a guest has a problem like we did one must go through the Innkeeper or other employees--all of which were not great. (2) The people in charge retaliated to our dispute with outright lies.
A major power outage occurred during our stay and we decided to stick it out and hope for the best. Late the next day an employee called us and stated that they were closing the Inn and we were to return immediately and get our belongings. When we got back to the Inn we asked if they could help us find alternate lodging and they more or less said "NO". The employee stated she did not have a phone and I pointed to the land line that was working and to her cell phone. She would not assist us. Since the Internet was still down and 20,000 people were coming into town for a Film Festival we did not know what to do. We felt it would be silly to drive to the next town and stop and ask at each place. So, we headed for home at 5 pm (St. Louis) and asked for a full refund. We stayed at a motel right outside of the MI border. Later we found out that the power was restored the following day. If they would have called us we would have returned to salvage our vacation. We had booked 4 nights. When we asked for a refund it was denied due to their refund policy and we had declined their offer for alternate lodging. We were never offered alternate lodging. We contacted our credit card company and managed after several months to get a partial refund. The Sand Castle Inn rented our room at a deeply discounted rate and that was the amount they eventually gave back to us. After much back and forth with our credit card company, Visa gave us an additional refund. We still lost money. I am still upset that the owner would not communicate with us directly. So much miscommunication could have been avoided. This whole experience has ruined my thoughts on Bed and Breakfast lodging. I am counting on chain hotels in the future.

Room Tip: Our room was the handicapped room. Absolutely no room for a wheelchair. We had a hard time fitting...

We would like to thank the guest for visiting the Sand Castle and would like to encourage the guest to visit again at either our Inn or other area bed and breakfast inns. If there had been no power outage, all of the guest complaints would not have occurred.

A tremendous storm hit South Haven on the first night, Wednesday, of the guest’s 4 night stay (Wednesday through Saturday nights). It knocked out power to the entire City of South Haven. We have been in business at the Sand Castle for 18 years, and we have never seen the entire City knocked out of power. Parts of the City have lost power in storms but never the entire City.

All of the guests were understanding of a very difficult situation. By 4 o’clock PM the next day, Thursday, power had not been restored, and the City estimated power would be restored on Friday. It was at this time that we made the decision to close the Inn. It would have been dangerous and irresponsible to keep our 10 room Inn full of guests that night with no power and no means of communication.

We arranged for a nearby Inn to take our guests for this one night. If this guest did not hear of the arrangements that had been made, it was because of their verbally abusive and unpleasant behavior. They stomped out of the Inn yelling and demanding their money back and cancelling the remaining 2 nights of their reservation. They blamed us for the power outage!

Because they cancelled their reservation, their rooms were, of course, re-rented and a prompt refund was given to the guest in the full amount due them. A third party, independent firm, reviewed the refund amount given the guest and found it to be the correct amount due to this guest.

This is a case of making the best of very difficult and unusual circumstances, and the nine other guests of our Inn and we did that.

There were 2 other guests in the exact same circumstances as this guest. Both of these guests went to the other Inn for the Thursday night that we were closed and came back on Friday to stay Friday and Saturday at the Sand Castle Inn.

We were looking for a B&B between Holland and South Haven to stay at for one night. There aren't too many that will allow a one night stay but the Sand Castle will allow it this time of year. We booked the Majestic room on the 2nd floor with a two story turret ceiling. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Upon arrival we were greeted by Carlene and she oriented us to the facility, our room and breakfast schedule. The breakfast was very good...fruit, yogurt, pastries, toast, english muffins, french toast dish, sausage, bacon, juice, coffee, tea etc. Even a picky eater could find something to enjoy!

The only minor complaint we had was the sound of flushing/draining water from our neighbors in the Tower room. Overall the room was quiet, but we apparently had neighbors who had to continuously use the restroom? Maybe the room could use a little more insulation? With having a two story turret ceiling, we weren't expecting to hear others above.

Would we stay here again? Yes!!!

This place is a gem! I looked and looked for a reasonably price place close to Saugatuk where we could stay for only 1 night and this fit the bill. The outside of the inn is beautifully maintained with a lovely garden and wrap around porch with rockers. Brenda showed us to our room, the Tapestry Room. Big bed, beautiful furniture, private deck. The snacks in the afternoon were delicious and the other guests were fun to talk to. The breakfast was very good and so was the coffee. We walked downtown and enjoyed the shops and walked to the beach which is only 1/2 block away. I highly recommend this place and would come back again.

This was our first trip to South Haven and the Sand Castle Inn. We could not have been more pleased with our choice! From the moment we checked in until we left, Brenda, Carlene and the staff made sure we had everything we needed for our stay. Our room (the Royal Suite) was spotless and perfect with a huge private balcony. The Inn's location is excellent as it is only one block from the beach and one block from downtown shops and restaurants. We enjoyed our time so much that we've already booked a return trip just one month later! You will love the Sand Castle Inn.

My husband and I stayed for 3 nights in August, 2013. The Inn is beautiful, great location to town and activities. The pool was a welcome and relaxing feature. The staff, especially Brenda, were friendly and would go out of their way to assist guests. For example, when we first checked in, the central AC was not working in our room (Majestic), Brenda and Peno (?) immediately installed a window unit that kept us quite comfortable throughout our stay. Breakfast was OK, nothing special. Every late afternoon, Brenda would set out appetizers which was a nice gesture.

Our dissatisfaction was that the Inn furnishings are kind of a hodge-podge of low quality, dirty, outdated contemporary furniture. There are a few antiques and antique replicas but for the most part, it needs an update by an experienced decorator. There are significant stains on the old, berber carpeting, including in the bedroom. Yuck! We kept shoes on to avoid stepping on the unknown stains.

The biggest concern was our bedspread. After the window AC was installed, I laid down on the bed only to find dried dark stains on the bedspread, I pulled the bedspread back and there were white stains on the underside of the bedspread. I about vomited! Brenda immediately removed the bedspread apologizing profusely. There was no replacement bedspread so we went without for the next two nights with sheets. I was hesitant to use the extra blanket out of concern that it hadn't been laundered between guests. The third night, the bedspread was returned looking shining and clean...but still outdated and worn. I suspect that this Inn is not replacing the bedspreads between guests. It almost seems like a health violation.

I would recommend the Inn but I would suggest before you book, ask if they clean ALL bed linens between guests. I'd also ask if they've cleaned or better yet replaced the decade old carpeting and furnishings.

I realize it is the end of the season. There are many areas of the Inn where there is remodeling taking place.I am sure it is constantly under renovation. But, there is just no excuse for soiled bed linens and carpeting.

We would like to thank the guest for visiting the Sand Castle Inn and for taking the time to write their review. We would like to ask this guest and the other readers of this review to read the one review that has come in since this review was written and the ten reviews received prior to this guest’s review.

We are in our 18th season at the Sand Castle, and a great percentage of our guests are returning guests. We couldn’t still be in business and have guests come back again and again if we did not change the linens and towels between guests! I have to assume that this reviewer mis-spoke when she wrote “ask if they clean all bed linens between guests.”

Carpets are professionally shampooed twice a year and of course, vacuumed daily. Bedspreads and blankets are cleaned as needed. The blanket on the bed is “double sheeted” so that there are three (clean) sheets on all of our beds.

We are inspected every year by two independent consultants and rated. We have never been written up by these inspectors for an unclean Inn. And, of course, we listen to all of our guests and their written and verbal comments. We are frequently complimented on the cleanliness of our Inn.

Again, thanks to this guest for visiting and reviewing us. We learn and improve by listening to our customers.

This is a great b and b. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Enjoyed the wonderful breakfasts on the porch. This b and b has a pool which is very nice. The afternoon treats and evening cookies were a pleasant surprise. Located one block from the beach and an easy walk to town we will definitely return.

Room Tip: The tower room was very nice with a small private deck.
