“Very nice, lovely stay, would definitely recommend!”
Reviewed 22 August 2009

Our stay at Victoria Resort was very nice. This was our first time staying at a B&B instead of a large hotel. We arrived early, before check in, but our room was ready. The front desk receptionist, Jenny, was very friendly and welcoming, and gave us a brief low down of the happenings of South Haven. Our room, a standard queen, was very nice and clean. The only down side was the bathroom, since it is original to the building, was very small. But it was clean and well maintained. The hotel is about 2 blocks, and short 5 minute walk, to the public beach, and a quick drive (maybe a 15-20 minute walk) into downtown South Haven. Breakfast was a 9:30, which we chose from options of 8, 8:30, 9, 9:30, and 10. Every morning they had a variety of muffins, fruit, bagels, and cereal, and a delicious hot specialty dish each morning. We had a very yummy apple french toast bake thing (delicious!) and the next morning they served a tasty sun-dried tomato quiche. They even gave me the recipe for the quiche b/c my husband liked it so much! The grounds were well groomed with out-door gathering places to read a book or relax with friends. The pool was nice and they had sports courts with free equipment. The staff were all so friendly and very helpful! They do also have free wi-fi. Overall, we had a really great stay and the next time we're visiting South Haven we'll definitely stay here again. My only word of advisement would be that since the building is a historic landmark, the building is old. So as a result you can hear some of the plumbing from the other rooms and the walls are not as sound proof as a modern hotel. Other than that, wonderful little B&B!!

We visit SH quite often. This time we stayed 2 nights. We headed home the day the crowds were coming in for Memorial Day. I feel we came at the perfect time, because it was not crowded, and everything everywhere was in place for the holiday weekend. The service was excellent. All employees were very friendly. The grounds looked perfect. We stayed in room 102 which is on the first floor and closest to the front door. A Dimplex electric fireplace at the foot of the bed, in case you're there when it's chilly. Central air conditioning too. A vcr in room, and the office has movie library. The queen size bed was very comforable. The bathroom is small. I am 6-1 and 280 and it sufficed. Even a little bowl of chocolate candy on a table in the hallway. The beach (not South Beach or North Beach) was 2 blocks away. Downtown was about 6 blocks away. So glad they have complimentary bikes to use. Good ones too (Trek brand). There is an inground pool, but it was just going to open like the day after we left. There is a tennis court and a basketball court, and tennis racquets and basketballs. The hot breakfasts were outstanding with choice of all the normal hot and cold beverages.. If you prefer something smaller, there is cereal, bananas yougurt, muffins, and etc, We've stayed in several bed & breakfasts so we can honestly say this is a good one. We will be back..

My fiance and I stayed at the Victoria Resort for a fall weekend in October and had a great time. We stayed in the King Deluxe room and it was very nice. The staff was very friendly, the property very clean and the breakfasts were delicious. We took advantage of the fire pit one night and roasted marshmallows to make s'mores. We also used the bikes that the property offers and took a nice bike ride into town and along the water.

We had a great romantic weekend in South Haven. We went to a couple wine tastings, went to the apple orchard to pick apples, had some great dinners in downtown South Haven. The weather was unusually warm the weekend we went, so we were able to take full advantage of the outdoor activities. The fall colors were beautiful also.

We loved the Victoria Resort... get the upstairs King Suite if you can... very quiet, great location (a block from the beach) and great hosts and help... we will most definitely be back.

Loved South Haven and the area - came in July with the family and came back as a couple - Cranes Orchard/Pies and Stephensons Farm Market were great in the fall... rode the Kal-Haven trail to Stephensons - really nice bike ride... also took a day trip to Holland (best downtown/shopping in the area) and Grand Haven (nice downtown and beach/lighthouse)... overall just a great, great experience.

We had an excellent stay at the Victoria resort. The staff was friendly, helpful, and accomodating. The included breakfast each morning was wonderful. Other cool amenities included a whirlpool, refridgerator, and fireplace in our room, free movies to borrow from the front desk, swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts, and bikes to borrow for rides downtown. We had no complaints at all about our stay. The rooms are a bit old fashioned in decor, and the whirlpool tub seemed a little old, but it all added the charm and the b & b feeling. We would definately recommend it to a friend, and will probably return again ourselves. The location was convenient, and it had all the comforts of home.

  • Liked — they had everything we needed right there, including transportation (bikes) to downtown.
  • Disliked — no elevator

My husband and I took a 3 day vacation to South Haven (first time to Michigan) and came across the Victoria B&B while searching online. From what I saw online, I expected a rather quiet and romantic place along with a cool town with lots of things to do and see. The service was fine and the breakfasts very good but the condition and look and feel of the room was just dated and didn't really meet my expectations for what we were paying. The bathroom was oddly laid out with a small shower stall with just a tiny built in soap holder that could barely hold a bar of soap let alone face wash or shampoo/conditioner. There was no where in the bathroom other than the toilet to lay clothes and the sink was in the bedroom itself, not the bathroom. My other complaint is that you could hear the people above us walking around and anytime they ran the water, it was so loud in our room that you thought the shower was on in our room - not the end of the world but just a little annoying...

On the second day we were there, we asked a staff member in the evening for recommendations on places to eat and were directed to a pile of menus that we had already gone through a few times..we wanted advice from someone that lived in the area and the lady really couldn't help and basically went so far as to infer that they don't really give out personal recs. I was rather disappointed and just gave up on the conversation. We ended up going to the same place both nights for dinner as there really wasn't anything else in the area that interested us. South Haven itself is extremely small and is very family oriented so if you are looking for a romantic getaway but still a place with things to do and see for more than a hour or so, I wouldn't say this is it. We did drive up to Saugatuck one day and found that to be much nicer with more options of things to do, see and eat.

Overall, I came away feeling like I was at a summer camp, not a 2 night romantic getaway. If I were paying $99 a night for the room, I wouldn't be complaining but $155 a night in an area that just really does not have that much going on and a property that is very modest, that is pretty pricey.

It wasn't a terrible experience but not at all memorable.

The Victoria Resort is a genuine treasure. Since discovering it many years ago during annual getaways to South Haven with family and friends, it has become my first choice to stay that feels most comfortable, relaxing and appealing. Owners Bob and Jan, innkeeper Amanda, and the rest of the staff make you feel right at home. The perfect day includes one of Bob's amazing breakfasts offered in the charming dining room, a dip in the pool to unwind tense muscles, a spin through the neighborhood or to the beach or downtown on one of the many complimentary bikes, a nap in a clean and beautifully decorated room, enjoying a whirlpool bath, the breeze of a ceiling fan, or cozying up to a fireplace. Dinner options around town are many, and staff at the Victoria Resort are always on top of what's in, what's out, and what's new. Menus from various restaurants are available to review to help in deciding. There are board games in a common room, movies to borrow to watch in the room. The estate-like grounds are well kept and abundant with flowering plants and outdoor seating for easy conversation or lounging. Nestled in a residential neighborhood, it is off the beaten path, which makes it a quiet retreat. And yet, it's still just a few blocks from the beach and a short hike or quick bike or car ride into town. South Haven retains the charm of a small town. Without feeling overrun and commercialized, it still offers the attractive features of a tourist town, including great beaches, dining, shopping, and accommodations, most notably, the Victoria Resort.
