A major consideration here is that if you are at all fazed by the notion of being unenclosed in the African bush, then Mfubu may not be the place for you. Constant observation by opportunistic vervets and baboons, passing hippos, the odd diversion to avoid the elephants on the way to dinner and hordes of suicidal bugs as you consume your meal are not everyone's cup of tea. But, if you are my wife and I, then you're in seventh heaven...

Mfubu, is located on the banks of the Olifants River in the Balule Nature Conservancy, adjoining the Kruger Park. Oli (short - don't ask me how for Olga) the owner is a charmingly eccentric hostess, Czech via Sweden by extraction. The food is delicious, the ambience friendly and informal and the accommodation to a good standard. Some aspects of maintenance are proving challenging: subsidence has cracked the main swimming pool but there are two others. The two cottages were roomy and well appointed although the main caomp accommodation seems more basic - although adequate.

Another guest (a Dutch academic) has been returning to Mfubu with his family for eight years. We knew we wanted to go back at the first opportunity before we had left. Ahidden gem.
