Wonderful assortment of bread, pastries, and other sweet treats. Tried an oatmeal chocolate cookie and a pear tart. Both were melt in your mouth good. Not too sweet and perfectly baked.

The Pleasanton Brick Oven Bakery has now opened its new outlet for its bread and baked goods, Pleasanton Cafe, at 118 South Union Street, Traverse City.

You don't get the delicious brick-oven smell, as everything is baked at their other location and delivered here each day, but you get friendly service and the same good bread and pastries. There's a rustic-looking community table if you want to eat in, but most people probably buy and take out.

At this location they serve coffee from Madcap in Grand Rapids, which will be enough to attract some customers, but once they see the bread, they will probably add that to their order.

Let's be clear - this isn't a restaurant, though they have plans to open a place on Union Street, just north of the post office. It's a bakery where they make their own artisan bread, delicious pastries and, some weekday evenings, pizza. So it's a take-out.
When Pleasanton first opened, although the bread was good, it was a bit too rustic, a lot of whole wheat, which made it dense and chewy; but it changed hands, and now there is more white flour in the mix, and the patisserie is a lot more sinful and scrumptious. The bread and pastries may not be quite as 'healthy' now, but they're a lot more fun to chew on. There are some interesting ingredients in the bread, also.
They produce a range of pizzas some evenings. They are one size, and a bit pricey, but one will feed several people. The toppings vary weekly depending on what is available at the farmers' market. No delivery service, you have to pick up, and it is best to call in advance to reserve one, to avoid a long wait.

Rustic-style bakery. Fantastic quality. Wide assortment of sweet and savory breads. They bake and run out daily so go early!
