Sugar Beach Resort Hotel

We stayed at the Sugar Beach for a weekend in March. Seeing as it was March and an extremely cold weekend, we did not use the beach. We had just spent a couple days at Avalance Bay so our boys were not interested in a normal swimming pool. We chose the Sugar Beach because my husband and I had stayed there when we first started dating (10 years ago) and really enjoyed it.

When we made our reservation the staff was very friendly and accomodating with the number of questions I asked. We are traveling with a 1 1/2 year old and almost 3 year old. I changed the reservation more than once and did not have any problems at all.

The room looked OK and was clean. However it was on the first floor facing the beach and smelled extremely musty. My husband has severe mold allergies so that is something we try to avoid. Based on that smell alone I don't think we will be going back to the Sugar Beach again.

Many people rave about the Waffles at the continental breakfast. They are OK but really it is one poor girl with 2 waffle makers trying to make breakfast for a room full of people. Having something hot is a nice touch but it doesn't allow people to get in and out quickly if they have to wait in the line. After the first morning we opted to get breakfast elsewhere.

In reality all we needed was a place to sleep. We had lots of other activities planned so we knew we wouldn't be in the hotel much.

We spent three nights this week during Cherry Festival in a large third floor suite in the Sugar Beach Resort. We found it to be a beautiful hotel, situated on a lovely, well-kept beach. The hotel common areas and rooms are very well-kept, service was friendly and responsive (they even allowed a last minute change to our reservation), breakfast was great, and our family loved the amenitites (beach, pool, game room, onsite laundry, etc).

The only real issue was that we stayed in a non-smoking room on the third floor (which, as it turns out, is a contradiction-in-terms). Since the third floor is the only floor where smoking rooms are located, the smoke coming from those rooms was unavoidable. It seeped into the common areas, the air conditioners, and into every corner of our room. We washed all of our clothes in the laundry facility before we left, be even so, the content of our suitcases (even our cosmetic bags) reeked of smoke after we unpacked them at home.

Great hotel. Non-smokers avoid the third-floor at all costs.

This was a very nice hotel in an excellent location. There were a number of beachfront hotels next to each other that allowed for a nice long walk on the beach.

There was a parasail and boat rental right on the premises.

I'm not sure I would get a room on the first floor beachside. Too much traffic from all of the beach goers.

As was mentioned in other reviews, the internet connection was not very good. Probably should've left the laptop at home anyway!

The cleanliness of the room and maidservice was just OK. We had to ask for fresh towels and toilet paper.

We would definitely go back again!

We stayed at this hotel during the off-season since it coincided with the spring break for our kids, and we got a great deal on the room rate. The hotel was ok from the outside, but our suite was great and right on the beach with a view of the lake. Although we chose to depart early because it was still quite cold and rainy this time of the year, following were some of the items that made our stay less than perfect:

1. We could not connect to the Internet from our room as the wireless signal was VERY weak. I had specifically mentioned to the reservation staff that this was an imperative as I needed to get some work done during our stay; however, the Internet did not work from our room. The hotel staff offered to provide another wireless adapter but I did not try that as we decided to leave early anyway; also, my built-in wireless card works fine everywhere else so I did not think that that was the problem;

2. The rollout bed in the living room was not made and the sheets were used and dirty. They were changed promptly when we pointed this out;

3. The entry door to our side of the wing (I am not sure of the exact direction) had a sign that said that that door would remain closed and locked 24x7. However, it was broken and always stayed open. Since that door provides direct entry to the rooms, it seemed like a small security issue.

Despite the above problems, I'll say that our overall experience was positive and we might consider staying there again. The hotel staff is especially nice and welcoming.

Just returned from an overnight stay Sat to Sun. Motel was almost full with young families during Spring Vacation. We drove up without reservations. Got a great rate of $99 for a 2 room suite of 1 king and 1 queen bed for 3 adults. Room appeared tired and worn. Lots of wall dings and scuff marks. Peeling wallpaper in the bathroom. No real decorating theme except many shades of the color blue. My biggest issue was the lack of housekeeping. Previous guest had left a computer cord plugged into an outlet. We took it down to the desk. There were crumbs on one of the endtables and on the floor directly in front. I opened the endtable and the inside was full of crumbs. I had to plug in 2 of our travel fans behind the endtables next to the beds. There were food wrappers behind both tables. A used tissue was left in the bathroom from a previous guest. I noticed right away that the king bed ruffle was tucked up between the 2 mattresses on one side if the bed. The room was advertised as coming with a flat screen digital TV in the king bedroom, but there was just a regular big old TV. The TV in the queen bedroom was positioned so that it was very difficult to watch TV in bed. The general layout of the suite was strange. It was long and narrow. View was of the parking lot.
This suite lacked a couch altho it did come with a small table and 4 chairs plus one other chair. It did not have a closet, which was odd. The only place to hang any clothes up was in the king bedroom inside a wall unit. TV sat in the middle of the unit with drawers below the TV and 2 doors on either side with a rod to hang clothes.
The breakfast was fine. The girl attendent could use a lesson in how to smile and be friendly. She did her job but it certainly seemed like she was not enjoying herself. Kept disappearing into a back room. She makes the waffles for the customer and would make 2 at a time, leave them on the counter and then disappear.
This was a repeat stay for us and a disappointment. This stay certainly did not have the wow factor of our last room. The beds were fine, but certainly the housekeeping could have been better. I think the next time we will try someplace else in town.

Our family visited Traverse City for a color tour, and we wanted a suite so that we could all gather in the evenings and socialize. We booked a first floor suite, right on the beach with a beautiful view. Two rooms with TVs, which helped solve the kid/adult TV conflict. Large living area with couch, easy chair and table with four chairs had plenty of room for sitting around and talking. Good continental breakfast. Putt-Putt and Go-Carts across the street.

We just returned from our second stay at the Sugar Beach Resort Hotel in Traverse City MI. This hotel is impeccably maintained, and situated on the most gorgeous sand beach ever seen. Our children played on the endless sand beach all day long. The water is amazingly warm and shallow for about 100 feet out and then drops off, right where they have positioned blow up trampolines with slides! The hotel is so reasonably priced and includes a complimentary breakfast which includes made to order waffles, fresh fruit, pastrys, cereal etc! We will definately be returning on a yearly basis to enjoy this tucked away wonder!
