I have found that beachfront properties everwhere, in general ,are a bit rundown and short on cleanliness, but the GBRH was different. The building and our room was modern, clean, and well-appointed. There are enough amenities to meet most needs. The staff was friendly and helpful.

We had a king room on an upper floor facing the beach. The room was spacious, and the balcony was reasonably-sized and offered a great view of the water. The wireless internet access worked fine in the room. I liked that I could actually walk barefoot on the carpet and my feet didn't turn black. The bed was comfortable, and the shower had plenty of hot water (after you let it run for a couple of minutes.) We had a fridge and microwave, which was convenient.

It's a long walk into town for dinner, and although there are some eateries and small food stores nearby, they're across a busy state road that's pretty much impossible to cross on foot, so a car is recommended. The area itself is quiet and seemed free from loud music, motorcycle cruisers, and late-night partiers.

The staff was helpful in directing us to the National Park area, giving us maps and advice on the best route.

The few downsides: The building was non-smoking, but the AC gave off a stale smoky odor, maybe due to an old ventilation system from another era. This was remedied only if we ran the AC with the balcony door open, which is a waste of energy. One night the smell even awakened me.

Next, parking was a problem on our first night. We ended up creating our own space by parking the car on a tilt in a rocky garden area. The next day we asked the front desk about it and they said that there are enough spaces for each room, but guests bring in outside visitors who park there as well and it's hard to control. (Why not a placard and towing system, like they do on the Florida coast?) However, they advised that if we had trouble again, just to see the night manager and he/she would authorize us to park in special reserved spots.

There was a small resort fee tacked on to the bill, which seemed odd, because the resort amenities didn't seem that significant, unlike such properties in warmer climates with larger beaches. Given that the nightly rate wasn't cheap, I found that to be an unjustified bit of nickel-and-diming.

Lastly, as mentioned in another review, the bed linens and mattress pad did not fit, and it was gross to wake up to find myself sleeping directly on the mattress. The linens and mattress pad would be bunched up in the middle or at the foot of the bed. I had to get up in the middle of the night several times and try to squeeze everything back into place.

But the positives far outweighed these negatives, and while I probably will not have a reason to return to Traverse City, I do recommend this hotel to others.

The beach is beautiful and sandy. The resort is clean and kid freinldy. Very nice rooms and with excellent lake views. Tony Pappas the Front Office Manager is one of the very best hotel employees that we have ever encountered. The hotel is always booked but never feels crowded.

Room Tip: Book early!

This was our very first trip to Traverse City and vicinity, so we weren't quite sure what to expect. Although we were not able to book a lake view room, we were quite happy with our third floor courtyard(parking lot) facing room. It was well equipped with a fridge, microwave, and coffee maker. This property is flanked on both sides by private condos, so the beach area is not as expansive as one might expect, but it's well maintained and combed every morning. The resort also provides guests with freshly laundered quality beach towels, which is a nice touch. Several restaurants are within walking distance, but you will need a car to get to downtown Traverse City, which is a short drive away. There are several other beaches and points of interest in the area, and this hotel will serve as a good base. Do take a drive through the Old Mission peninsula and visit Sleeping Bear Dunes if you can.

Room Tip: No need to restrict yourself to waterfront rooms unless you plan to spend your time indoors

We stayed 3 nights at this hotel. We had 2 small toddlers with us, they had a great time. The beach is beautiful and the indoor pool was great. Lots of families! We had the wonderful continential breakfast with lots of choices. We went to the sand dunes, the wine tours and ate in some great restaurants in Traverse City. We will return!

Room Tip: The queen bed room was better than the spa room, it didn't have a sink in the bathroom. We had a...

We stayed here for two night in July. A bit older room but clean and well maintained. Soft sand beach that was near empty despite no vacancy at the hotel. Staff were very friendly. Short drive to downtown traverse city but many restaurant within walking distance. Very nice mini golf and go-carts across the street. Price was fairly average for summer rates at traverse city.

The Grand Beach and the Sugar Beach are owned by the same company....they both have excellent customer service and we highly recommend both....THE GRAND BEACH RESORT/HOTEL is simply outstanding...Tony Pappas the Front Office Assistant Manager is out of this world....he along with all his staff greet you with a family type friendlness...We feel like VIP's when we arrive and during our stay.....Tony is accomidating and very very very helpful....the rooms are very classy and extremely clean...they have appliances such as fridge, microwave etc....the breakfast is included in your stay and they are out of this world...from French toast to pancakes....pretty much all you can ask for for a breakfast....not some donuts to fill you up and then make you feel horrible afterwards.....If you are considering staying in Traverse City....take my advise and book with Grand Beach.....You will thank me for it....Please say hello to Tony for me....He would get a kick out of that !!

Room Tip: great great place to stay while in Traverse City Michigan !!

Have stayed at Sugar Beach Hotel before, (same owner) and wasn't sure if this would be as nice, but it was! Rooms were very clean, housekeepers very nice. Free Breakfast was great, awesome Belgium waffles with a cherry topping and fruit. The beds were also very comfy. Would stay again if we could get the price cheaper.
