“Beautiful beach, a great property for families”
Reviewed 1 July 2012

We stayed at the Grand Beach in June and enjoyed it very much. Several reviewers have commented that the place could use some sprucing up, and that is true, but the problems seem very minor to us. We got a good rate by booking a couple of months in advance and had a beach-side room. Although there were many families with children of all ages staying at the hotel, there was no noise on our floor at night. The beach is lovely and well-cared for, and the employees very friendly. If there was a downside for us, it was that the property's location on the far east end of Traverse City meant that we had to navigate the traffic on the main road to get to and from downtown and the Sleeping Bear Dunes area. But all in all--a great stay.

Some things to note:
-The property is located on a decent amount of sugar sand beach that is pretty well maintained
-Get a lake facing room, it is worth it
-On that note, the rooms don't face the west. You have to go onto the beach for a good sunset view
-Noisy and smoky neighbors are hard to avoid
-There was a hairball in our shower until I plucked it out (this was after a cleaning rotation)
-Floors aren't vacuumed, what appeared to be dog hair was all over our carpet
-Breakfast room is 100 degrees and packed
-Bottle openers are offered at the front desk
-Close to various activities and dining, but plan on driving because 31 is very busy
-Our room came with a DVD player and mini fridge which was a nice perk
-Beds have two thin pillows each and sheets that popped off often

Essentially this hotel could use a little facelift, the location is pretty good for spending the whole day on the beach, but the rooms are just a little bit grimy.

The rooms were nice.. The beach was very nice...Service was very good..The downside was this hotel is ready for a makeover.. For 200 bucks a night I expect sheets that fit,, Big screen TV not flat panel crt tv.. Nice pillows not wore out ones.. Had a noise complaint but the staff took care of it after a couple calls.. I did enjoy our stay and with a little makeover I would have rated this much higher then just average.. Would I stay there again??? Probably not

Room Tip: I reserved a room from their reservation desk due to a group discount.. Checked Orbitz and found roo...

My wife and I and another couple, all late 50s and early 60s, spent 2 nights at the Grand Beach. I'd like to give this hotel an excellent rating, but I can't justify it due to the dated facilities. As we pulled into the parking lot an employee was out front smoking a cigarette; not a good first impression. From that point things improved. Every employee we encountered, from the front desk to cleaning personnel to maintenance to kitchen, greeted us with a smile and offered pleasant conversation.
Both of our rooms were waterfont with comfortably sized balconies where all four of us could sit, watch the bay and enjoy drinks and snacks. The beachfront itself is very well maintained. Every morning someone straightens the ample chairs and lounges for the day's activities. The beach is very shallow, wading depth quite far out, making it excellent for families with young children. While the beach area is excellent, the hotel itself is stark and dull. Some landscaping would go a long way to spruce up the grounds. The cement patio drops sharply off to the sand, making for a boring visual.
The furnishings in the rooms, while clean and kept up, are in need of updating. Some of the wallpaper is starting to pull off and tiles are dull and old. The bathroom is very basic, offering only one sink and an old shower.
The breakfast was very basic. Cold waffles made on the spot (they put them in the maker for you, and if there are extras they sit in a "warmer"), hard boiled eggs, 3 cereals, yogurt, fruit and a couple other cold basics. Today most hotels have much better breakfasts included.
Overall, this is a nice hotel but it could be excellent with modest upgrades.

Room Tip: Bayside rooms have a nice view with balconies.

ok place to stay. Hotel is a little run down, bed was terrible. Advertised with outdoor pool, but indoor only. Staff very helpful and friendly and did a wonderful job making up the room each day. Just nothing really outstanding that makes me want to return. We actually cut our trip short by two days.

Room Tip: If getting a room with a spa, choose the top floor. It was very noisy when room above was using spa...

My family and I recently stayed here for four nights. Very clean and spacious room with nice amenities (fridge, wet bar, plenty of storage, nice balcony). The room was also tastefully decorated and had a nice shower. Only complaint about the room was the slippery polyester comforter, but the bed itself was comfortable. The beach was also better than expected with beautiful "brown sugar" sand and clear water - gorgeous view. Plenty of seating on the beach.

The Traverse City area is great and this was a good location for us to also take day trips to Sleeping Bear Dunes, Glen Arbor, Empire (the beach at the park there is FANTASTIC), as well as up the Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas. Lots of cute shops and great restaurants in TC also.

The indoor pool and hot tub was very nice - the kids especially loved this. Very nice complimentary breakfast as well - coffee, juice, pastries, cereal, fruit, granola and fresh made waffles with cherry sauce!

We would definitely stay here again and for the price we thought it was an exceptional value!!!

We had trouble getting a reservation at hotels we have used in the past, so based on TripAdvisor's reviews and availability we settled here. Very nice stay. Good basic breakfast and very attentive service. Lovely indoor pool. Magnificent beach and crystal clear water. Good location. Room (non-view) was fine. The temperatures were unusually warm 95+ and the hotel corridors were pretty tasty as a result. But our room was very comfortable and cool.
