“Wonderful public library!”

Traverse Area District Library

The library is the first place I always tell new residents and visitors to see in Traverse City. Located on the shore of Boardman Lake, it is a beautiful, modern facility that offers free wifi, visitor's information, maps, local newspapers, Michigan magazines, and programming of local interest. Oh yes...and they have books. ;) Must confess: I've never found the staff to be very friendly. But they are efficient and helpful when asked. And if you just need a quiet place to relax, the view of the lake from the upstairs seating area is beautiful!

I love the location of the library - perfectly adjacent to the bike path. Inside is spacious, bright, and had a wonderful view of Boardman Lake.

I lived in Traverse City for a year and a half. I spent much time at the Library and loved this place. A great facility with a lot of room and great views of the Boardman Lake. My daughter and I (my girl is 6) loved the library. Really a nice place to spend a few hours with a very personable staff.

I love this Library and when I meet someone who has just moved to the area I always bring them here to become a member. It is a comfortable and modern building with an art gallery/community meeting space, display cases that are always rotating with varied art projects and interesting collections, and a little gift shop to get used books a cup of coffee, cards and on weekends listen to a wonderful pianist who plays in the atrium. There are study rooms, a computer lab to do Internet research, a big periodicals section, a reference section and a great number of oversized nature, art and photography resource books.
We like to take advantage of the vast music and DVD lending library, books on CD, and extensive online resources that are useful when you need an older documentary from the BBC or NOVA. As teachers we appreciate the youth literature and resource area that is very bright and overlooks a garden and beyond that a park. It includes many books and private and group reading areas and a selection of puppets and a puppet stage. The teen area is also nice and includes the most recent book releases as well as Graphic Novels & Anime and features an informal gathering space for teen groups to signup and meet. This place is also a community hub that has film screenings, readings by authors and speakers and lots of events for youth and families. Most significantly I find the librarians to always be pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful to the all of the visitors.
