“Fresh and tasty.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2014

Went to Pepenero for lunch while in TC. Found this place in the Commons, formerly the State Mental Hospital. We took time to stop for lunch and really enjoyed it. My wife and I shared a Insalata Capricciosa and Baked Rigatoni Al Forno. It was delicious. Our friends had the special which was a chicken breast with a lemony caper sauce. It two was excellently prepared. Both the owners came to the table to see how things were, they were very gracious and rightfully proud of what they serve. The prices were good, the food delicious and the service was excellent. We would recommend it if you are in the area.

“Fresh, unique and delicious food and great service”

Make a point to wander the halls of Building 50 and find this treasure of a restaurant. Unassuming from the walkways, however full of interesting flavors with a broad menu. Attention to detail and personal service that enhances an already yummy experience.

“A True Taste of the Mediterranean”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 June 2014

My wife and another couple had dinner at Pepenero. It was recommended to us by the owners of the Country Inn & Suites Hotel. It is in the old mental institute buildings that is called The Village. It is fun looking at the old buildings and the grounds.

The setting is very intimate and the kitchen is right there and you can see them cooking the meals. The services was fast and efficient and friendly. The chef came by and personally ask how the food was. That is nice when the chef takes the time and is concerned enough to make sure everyone is doing well.

The food is not the typical Italian food. While their website and others say it is Italian their receipts and other material call it Mediterranean Cuisine which is a better description. It has an Italian flair for sure but not the Italian that we are used to.

The menu is limited and they focus on doing what they do well. I have travelled over a lot of Europe and been to many cities in Italy. The portion sizes are comparable to there which are smaller than what we are used to in the States. My overall opinion is the pricing is a little high for the portion. They do use quality ingredients. If you are expecting Olive Garden Italian and style and flavor this is not the place for you. If you want a true Mediterranean meal they hit that on the mark.

We started with a the Involtini Di Melanzane. It was very good but there were only two small rolls for $11. I had the Agnolotti Ripieni Al Funghi for $14. The pasta was excellent made. The sauce was good but not as rich has I had hoped. I would choose something different if I return to the area. My wife had the Ravioli Al Quattro Formaggi Al Ragu Di Funghi for $16. She really loved it and would get it again. The sauce had more character than mine and did seem to be better.

It was a pleasant dinning environment and would be a great romantic dinner for two. I still feel the price is a little high for the portion size. We both had water and with tip our bill was $54.

Happy dinning.

“Simply Delicious”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2014

Pepenero offers authentic, delicious Sicilian dishes prepared with fresh ingredients and lots of love. It is clear that the owners/chef take great pride in their little restaurant. The atmosphere is inviting and refreshingly unpretentious. Prices are affordable, including an excellent wine list.
Our party ordered the eggplant involtini as an appetizer. The rolls were served with a delicious marinara sauce which we happy to mop up with the freshly baked bread served along side. Bread was happily replenished along with crispy breadsticks.
Our entrees included a fresh tuna steak, perfectly cooked, four cheese ravioli with mushroom ragu, outstanding, and mushroom agnolotti with beef ragu, delicious. Portions are perfect for a hungry diner without being overwhelmingly enormous. Our daughter was slightly disappointed with the minestrone soup which was heavy on the broccoli and cauliflower and not what she was expecting.
Overall our experience was excellent, including two fabulous desserts which disappeared in seconds.
Service, food and ambiance, all excellent at Pepenero. We will be back and look forward to trying the many other delicious sounding dishes on the menu.
