“Not for those seeking a quiet getaway”
Reviewed 7 September 2009

One of the biggest problems with Gordon Beach Inn is that its sister property, Lakeside Inn, is just so darn perfect.

We were traveling Labor Day weekend and Lakeside was booked, so we decided to stay at Gordon Beach Inn instead. To be fair, Gordon Beach Inn's website is really upfront that if you are looking for something more quiet, Lakeside might be a better choice. The reason we like the area is that we to get out of Chicago for some peace and quiet and we like to stay really close to the beach. Gordon Beach Inn didn't really offer either, so while it wasn't a fit for us it might work for someoen with a different agenda.

Here are a few pros and cons:

Pro: Timothy's restaurant was right downstairs.
Con: We didn't like the food at Timothy's much, but others seem to love it. (My vegetarian option was ravioli and veggies in a very watery broth...it was like picking vegetables out of a bowl of soup. My husband's fish was good and very fresh, but they put so many toppings on it that it seemed a little overboard and took away from the flavor of the fish.)
Pro: Older, charming building
Pro: Staff was very nice to us--wanted to make sure to throw that in since other reviewers have had problems. We definitely didn't.
Con: NOISE! Granted it was Labor Day weekend, but we were in Room 13 right on the 2nd floor right above the entrace. Our first night there we heard the front door slam at least every 5 mins from around 7 pm untili midnight. Then we heard some couple get into a fight in front of the place. Plus, everyone in our hall was slamming the door until around midnight too. Seriously, we aren't that picky, and I couldn't figure out how there could actually BE that many doors to slam. It isn't that big of a place! Around 1 a.m. we finally got to enjoy the sound of crickets.
Pro/Con: The beach is nearby, but it really isn't that close. I'd say between 1/4 and 1/2 mile. And they recommend that you don't drive there since the neighborhood assoc. tows. It was fine for us, a couple without much stuff, but if you were bringing kids/coolers/chairs/ etc. it would be a hassle.
Pro: They do have a cool art gallery downstairs that is worth looking at.

The lobby has been taken over with extra tables for the restaurant which is open to the public. Inn guests do not get preferred parking during restaurant operating hrs nor is there any space given to guests to lounge by the fireplace or anywhere much in the lobby area besides 2 old sofas set haphazardly where there is some space. Rooms have paper thin walls so expect no privacy at all. Coffee and donuts is all that is offered to in the way of anything. We will never stay here again.

Although this hidden treasure can be a little noisy on a busy summer weekend, Sunday through Thursday can make up for it. It's a step back to a time when life was at a slower pace. Stepping into the lobby you feel as if the the year was 1925. the stone fireplace and woodwork look like the set from a movie. Although the furniture is not fancy it is all you need for your stay. The idea of this hotel is to take you away from the normal chain motels that all look the same. Although the rooms do have small tv's it's not the owners idea that you spend your time in the room watching them. Linens where clean and fresh and room was freshened up every day. The building was built in the 1920's and still looks the way it did then.
People must realize this is a setting for relaxation and not a big party stay. Charm of the building is the draw along with Lake Michigan. The beach is about 3 city blocks away and beautiful. The front desk closes between 9-11 depending on the time of year but there is always an emergency number to contact at the front desk. Staff are locals so you can find out what to see and where to go on this beautiful side of the lake. Lots of inside information on wineries, fruit picking, and restaurants in the area.
A gorgeous place in the fall too. Artwork in the lobby doesnt really go with the building.. would suggest something different.

I wish the sign had said that! I was in town for my Son's wedding, and what should have been a wonderful quaint experience, quickly turned into the vacation from Hell.
On my recommendation the entire Bridal Party, relatives from out of town, and the Parents of the Groom, all booked rooms here.
The first impression was very disappointing, but we had high hopes that it would get better. Was not to be! Each step from the lobby to the room was upsetting. Unfriendly staff, wood floors that creak with every step, walls paper thin, showers that scald, extension cords everywhere you look, cold water tap in the bathroom that didn't work at all. Spiders inside the windows, airconditioning that was all but non-existent. Three Bridesmaids tried to blow dry their hair - and blew the fusses in their bathrooms.
The desk staff is only there during the day, so if a problem arises, which it did, there is no one there to help. They THREATENED to make us pay for rooms if guests left because of noise etc. however, they booked those guests in between the wedding guests, even though we have requested the rooms all be together, and warned them before booking that it would be a noisy group due to the occassion. They said not to worry, they had big parties all the time. Judy the Manager, complained to every single guest that crossed her path, and sent a threatening letter to every guest in the hotel, warning about noise, and that they would have to pay for lost revenue, even though we took up all but 3 rooms. Believe me, if we had had the opportunity, we ALL would have checked out and relocated. What kind of hotel does that? If they had a night staff, a lot of these problems would be avoided.
They are NOT, I repeat NOT on the Beach as advertised, the Beach is 1/2 mile away and you have to drive.

This place is old, shabby, dark, mildewy and run down. Toilets don't flush all the way and everthing is old. NOT QUAINT... OLD!!The front desk is vacant from 10pm until 8am the next day. No in-room coffee and lobby coffee is at 8:30. No breakfast or lunch foods available without driving into town.

We were there for a family wedding & were told our group was the only occupants. We gathered in the old and dumpy common room and the young bridal party gathered on the outside porch, of course becoming noisy and rowdy. The Inn got several complaints and told us some of the other guests (what other guests??) walked out. They tried to get us to pay them restitution for lost revenue. Problems could have been avoided if the front desk was occupied like a normal hotel.

Next night one of our kids locked his key in the room. NO-ONE on duty at midnight and NO-ONE to respond to emergency calls to let him in his room. He broke the door frame to get into his room. Wrong thing to do but again could have been avoided if the front desk were occupied.

Go somewhere else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We just got back from a 3 night stay there. We were in town for a wedding that weekend and decided to stay at the Inn… I never write reviews like this, but this place was so bad, I had to warn anyone I can not to stay here.

When you walk in, you will feel a cold breeze…. That is not the air conditioning, because that was barley working, rather the cold/rude staff and owners working at the front desk. With the exception of the housekeepers, the staff could care less about you.

This surprised me, because the wedding party called and reserved 95% of the hotel at $100-$150 a night…. You think they might try to take care of us a little!

However, the coldness/rudeness of the hotel employees was not as big a problem, because they leave the place around 9:00pm… This means no one at the front desk, the office, the patio. So if you have a problem, you’re S.O.L.

The rooms are small….. Loud…. Dirty. A STRONG word of the wise, the showers will BURN you!!!! They are not up to code, so when someone in another room flushes the toilet, you better be ready to jump out of the shower quick...

The hotel gives you no toiletries. BRING SHAMPOO.

Parking is a problem, because there are no spots, and the places people find to park are usually taken up by restaurant customers.

The patio is dirty, littered with bugs…As are the showers, and guest rooms.

This is not a place for romance... business... pleasure...rest!

Do yourself a favor, STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE.

If you want to sit in a cramped, cold, noisy room, with a 9 inch TV with bad reception and broken remote, old ratty linens, wallpaper peeling from walls, paint peeling off floors and no control of temperature, curtains looked like they were hand sewn from old sheets, this is the place for you.

My husband surprised me (and how) with a romantic night away on my birthday, supposedly to walk along the beach, which was almost 1/2 mile away (not a few steps) ; we were gonna have a romantic dinner which the owner could not give us a reservation even though it was not full that evening, so we ate at some Mexican place; we were going to walk hand in hand to downtown shopping, which was nothing more than a closed bakery, a liquor/deli and another closed establishment and that was it! There is no tourist shopping/sightseeing, there is no nearby beach, there is no ambiance of warmth, just an old place with owners as cold as the room. Needless to say we left before 10pm the evening we arrived to salvage what was to be a beautiful romantic evening. Trying to get our money back, will NEVER GO BACK OR RECOMMEND. Beware read the reviews before you go to these places.
