Barothy Lodge
Reviewed 11 January 2012

The Barothy Lodge is a hidden gem of West Michigan! Accommodating any number in your party from 2 to 120, this place is ideal for retreats, family time, fun with friends and especially family. I attended a board retreat with a group of 14 people, staying in the Elkhorn Lodge. The lodge did not disappoint for entertaining a crowd (TWO refrigerators and dishwashers in the kitchen) with clean, modern accommodations including comfortable beds. Plenty of room to relax near the gas hearth or the outside decks where the Pere Marquette is less than 100 feet. Beautiful property!

Room Tip: Every lodge is unique and different. Not a bad view on the property.

Our group of friends have been staying each February at Barothy for the last 5 years. We have had an excellent time each year.

The last two years we stayed at Eagles Nest. It is located on the east side of the grounds right on the Pere Marquette river. There was an eagles nest on the other side of the river last year and we got to watch the eagles flying in and out of the nest all weekend. We have had deer looking in the windows and a flock of about 50 turkeys in the back yard.

The previous two years we stayed at the Chinook, located at the west end of the complex. Both lodges are similar. They are both well maintained and are very clean. They both have a pool table and a hot tub. As with all of the lodges you have to bring all your food and drinks.

The lodges are located far enough apart to give you privacy. The river is close to all of them. There are hiking and ski trails.

We always have a great time at Barothy. When we arrive for our weekend stay we never leave the grounds until the weekend is over, which always comes too soon.

The best part of the Barothy Lodge is the grounds, which are very well kept with deer and other animals wandering through. There's some of the state forest to walk through.

I think the lodge works best when travelling with a group. Most of the lodges are set up for a a larger family/gathering than ours. We stayed in the Log Cabin, which is nice with an excellent porch overlooking the ponds, but a little claustrophobic when stuck in the rain. The larger cabins have rec rooms and somewhere to hang out. Bring everything you need for cooking, we forgot and cooked without salt. We got excellent farmers' produce from Grassa, on the road into Ludington.

We took one of the canoe trips down the river, which was a bit more "lively" than we're used to but good exercise.

Downside: the bedding is a bit tired, and downstairs could do with a good airing.

We were invited to a wedding on the banks of the river under the trees at Barothy Lodge on Saturday 16 August 2008. It was really romantic and the weather was perfect.
We stayed two nights in Duffys. My husband, son and I had the cabin to ourselves.
Because of the wedding, we did not have time to do any hiking. However, we went inner tubing on the river, swam a lot and caught a couple of trout.
We can highly recommend Barothy Lodge. Having Duffys to ourselves was a bit pricey but worth it for the privacy. The rooms were great and the level of general cleanliness and hygiene absolutely spot-on.

We have stayed at Barothy Lodge for quite a number of years now. The cabins they have are impressive, well appointed, and for the location, very luxurious. Most, but not all, cabins have indoor hot tubs and pool tables. I personally like the absence of TV to give it that get away from it all feeling.

The cabins are spread out nicely, not right on top of each other. The gournds (320 acres of it) are gorgeous Michigan river valley lands, richly wooded and teem with deer, turkey, migrating birds
and even a few peacocks. They also have preserved some wetlands which adds to the overall character of the resort. All of this on one of Michigan's premier trout streams, the Pere Marquette River (a National Wild and Scenic protected river), of which Barothy's has 3 miles of river property. Plenty of marked (some better marked than others) hiking trails traverse this marvelous setting. These ttrails also provide cross country skiing during the winter. There is nothing like a cool, wet fall morning and taking in those wiffs of ffresh, pine scented air.

Though I have never been up during the summer, they appear to have enough plenty of things to keep the family happy....an outdoor pool, fishing ponds for those who find the trout in the river a bit too selective, canoeing and other activities. One cabin even has their own pool! Plus they are only a dozen or so miles from premier Lake Michigan beaches and a couple miles more takes you to Ludington State Park.

The only negatives are that they are extremely stict about having everyone off the property by the 1 pm checkout, especially given the acreage of the resort. I can understand having to clear out of the parking areas by each individual cabin, but it is frustrating to pay all that money and get the feeling of being unceremoniously booted off the property at check out time. Also, keep in mind there is no air conditioning in any of the cabins. If you happen to get one of those hot, muggy, still summer nights, I would imagine it would not be too comfortable.

However, despite this, Barothy Lodge is a premier destination for those who are looking to get into nature, but like to have the conveniences of deluxe accomodations. And for those who fish trout, there is no finer place I can think of.

I have been going up to this lodge for 5 years and I love it. Very clean, great staff. We go every August for 4 days and love it. If you want to have a good time, stay here!! The river is a bit of a challenge, not for beginners. We stay at the Elkhorn. You wont regret staying here. There is no air conditioner but the cool nights keep it just right. Might want to take a fan for the hot days. Good fishing too!! Looking forward to going July 29- August 1 2005. Will return year after year!!!!!!!!!!
