Cherrywood Lodge - Econo Lodge Inn & Suites
Ranked #2 of 2 Hotels in Wetmore
Reviewed 23 August 2013

On our way to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore we stopped at a hotel in Grand Marais, MI. They were booked up but referred us to the Cherrywood Lodge in Munising (60 mi. west). We called to reserve a room but had to pay in advance. It was near dark when we got to Munising and couldn't find the hotel in town, where we expected it to be. Found it ~4 mi. out of town, discovered it was hooked onto an EconoLodge. The place was very shabby in appearance and desperate for repairs. The faucet in the tub ran constantly. There was black mold in several areas of the bathroom and the floors and carpet were not clean. The drapes weren't wide enough to close completely so we had a 2" wide gap from which to see our "view": an empty lot full of junk. We had to walk across a large parking lot - in the rain - to get to our lousy continental breakfast. One plus: the room was very spacious. That said, this was the WORST room we had on our 2-week trip and the MOST EXPENSIVE.

Room Tip: STAY AWAY! Drive into town and find any other place!

We stayed for 5 nights while visiting Munising and the people that work there are above and beyond great. The beautiful clean rooms, the privacy and quietness of the motel was wonderful. Their breakfast was great. Everything was kept clean and neat and they refilled all the trays as fast as people emptied them of food. Everyone should consider this motel when staying in Munising. Our apartment like room was very reasonable and we really liked the extra sitting room since we were there all week. If you need to shop go to Shopko only a short distance away. Its a great store and their manager helped us in a time of need and went above and beyond locating this motel for us after we left the one we had made reservations for as it was not acceptable for us.

Room Tip: This motel sits on a lot of acres. There is plenty of room to park, walk and park huge vehicles and...

We stayed one night on our way home from a wonderful week renting in a WI lake cabin... this hotel was horrible! I wanted a nap when we arrived, only to find the beds were dirty, sand in one and some kind of cracked corn in the other?!?! The hotel was full, so no chance in getting a new room, nor a room in a nearby hotel. Also, the bathroom was not clean, locks on the doors seemed to be a work in progress (holes in the door knob plate). The floors and walls were thin enough to hear ever sound above and around us. Checked out the pool only to find it was as disgusting as the dirty beds. Breakfast area was not very inviting after the room we had, so we skipped the free breakfast. Overall I think this place should be knocked down and rebuilt!

On the upside, the staff did answer the phones when we called, and were relatively pleasant.

Room Tip: I can't help, our room was horrible.

We stayed here 2 nights in July, and had a lovely experience. Yes, the floors shake some when people walk by. Yes, the security locks on the outside door have been disabled. Yes, the beds weren't the comfort level you get at a high end hotel. And, there wasn't much for hot food in the contintenal breakfast. And, there were far too many people in the pool. But, I thought, overall, the decor was nice and updated. The rooms were spacious. The staff were very nice. The location was convenient. And the price was right. You can't stay at a place called "econolodge" and expect luxury. However, if you just want a nicely decorated, clean hotel, this place fits the bill.

This hotel has some real maintenance problems consistent throughout the property. Everything from siding coming loose, to peeling paint, to in room hairdryer not working. Outdoor security locks are removed. We were on floor 1 and any little movement from upstairs was incredibly loud & squeaky. However, we also thought our room (we actually had 2 different rooms as we extended our stay) were very clean. Front desk personnel very helpful. The restaurant & lounge are closed. It's about 5 miles from Munising. We might consider staying here again if the price was right, but would also look at other properties in the area to compare.

We had reservations for 2 nights. When we arrived we were given a room that had not been cleaned. Went back to the desk and were given another room---it had not been cleaned. Finally, on the third try we got a cleaned room. The room was nice but we were on the first floor and the floor above us was extremely squeaky--not much sleep that night as the people above us were up much of the night. We went to the "hot" breakfast only to find out that hot meant toast your frozen waffle or a piece of bread--then it will be hot. No meat, eggs or anything else resembling hot. We then canceled our second nights stay and went down the road to get another room. Would not stay here again!

I was expecting that because this is an "economy motel," it would have a modest accommodations. From the outside, it appears to be in good condition and it is far enough from the highway so that you do not hear traffic, what little there is even during peak tourist season. The first thing I noticed is that the security locks on the outside doors have been removed. Once I got to the hallway, I was disappointed because the carpeting is worn and dirty. I did speak to the owner about the door locks and she explained that they got permission to remove them because they freeze up in the winter so that people could not get in. She also said that the crime rate in the area is very low. The owner and desk clerk are very nice ladies, by the way.

This property is worn out and needs repairs. We were in the back portion which may be an older section. The room needs remodeling. It was poorly painted at some time and they painted over an obvious water damaged wall and thus the paint was peeling.

The second day there, it rained heavily and the roof leaked, soaking the ceiling and wall in the bathroom, where it had been painted over. The carpeting throughout the parts that I saw is old and dirty. The beds are old and uncomfortable. At times, I could not get a decent WI-FI signal to connect my PC to the internet. Lighting in the room is poor and higher wattage bulbs need to be used in the main part of the room.

Better accommodations were available in the area for about the same price and I wish we had gone elsewhere.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back part are closer to the pool and a small gathering room.
