“A Restaurant & Lots More”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 September 2013

We stopped by for Sunday Brunch and, never having been there before, were highly pleased with all l that we found, The decore' is log-cabin exquisite, The cleanliness is pristine. And the food was delish! We found the buffet provided a huge variety of salad offerings. The entre' bar offered a hearty blend well-suited for a large meal in mid-day. Plus the dessert bar provided many specials for our sweet tooth. Once full, we walked the grounds and found a museum well-ladened with historical machinery and home articles from decades past. Sure did jog the memory, it did. It was a spectacular day, made the more by seeing this resort so well kept.

Room Tip: Acquire one with a Jacuzzi within.

The Shack is a beautiful, quiet and peaceful place to stay while in the Fremont area. The grounds are meticulous. It sits on Lake Robinson, a nice lake used by others for fishing, water skiing, etc. There are paddle boats to borrow (no fee). Also lots of nice wooden chairs under the porch to enjoy the view. That's what they've got going right. Here's the scoop on the bad news. They call themselves a bed and breakfast, but this may be the worst breakfast we've ever had. We were there for 4 mornings and the breakfast was the same every day. No variety! The meat was tasteless, the bread mediocre. Also canned peaches every morning, which is sad in a state known for its fruit. I was disappointed every morning. On the plus side though, they do have banana splits each evening which was fun and delicious. Sparse on the toppings though. As for the decor, it definitely needs an update, lots of mauve and blue! However everything was very clean. And we did have a jacuzzi right in the room! One other disappointment was there was no way to leave comments. I asked at the front desk upon checkout and there are no comment cards, which tells me they are not interested in feedback or constructive criticism. Overall I like this place and with a few improvements in food and perhaps decor, it could be a real star!!

Room Tip: We had a lake view room which was nice. We left the window open and was fantastic.

I live locally to the Shack and was always impressed with its northern charm. Decided to stop by for dinner. The dinner buffet was picked over and not restocked. The roast beef was dry, stringy and crusty on the ends. Canned vegetables cooked to the point of burnt/mush. The bread was good. This venue has so much potential in offering an up-scale, relaxing, romantic dinner environment. Such a shame to see it under-perform. Exceptionally poor value for the money spent. Have not been back since.

The hotel is in the middle of a rural area. Great for relaxation, bad for getting a meal. A bakery, pub and small-town family-style restaurant 8 miles away in White Cloud. Better, more varied, options are 10-12 miles away in Fremont. Unless you are willing to drive up to 20 miles RT to eat, best to bring your own food and use their kitchenettes.

Average for terrible food (1) in a beautiful setting (5).

Very clean, but I agree with the guy from Linden. The food is really, really, really bad.

It's obvious where the owners are trying to save money, Breakfast was powdered eggs and smokey-links floating in some kind of water. No yogurt, no fruit, no pancakes/waffles, no donuts, no juice, weak coffee. etc. There's a server controlling the amount of meat you get for dinner (chicken nuggets or wings) to go with your canned corn, canned beans and fake mashed potatoes. The whole situation just felt unwelcoming, as though they were always on guard to catch someone doing something wrong. (Just count the number of signs telling you what NOT to do.)

Bring your own soap and shampoo. The soap they supply is very small.

We also had to hang towels over the window because the cheap, plastic mini-blinds wouldn't close all the way.

Extremely overpriced for the location and amenities.

Room Tip: Check to make sure the blinds work first.

Have been twice now and not disappointed yet. Very comfy place with a touch of Christian influence, but not over the top. Weekends includes a buffet dinner and each night are banana splits. Wonderful breakfast buffet in the morning. Excellent location on a quiet lake in Newaygo County. Winding walking paths and beautiful grounds make up the complex. For a quiet getaway, you cannot go wrong here.

Room Tip: Wonderful choice of rooms from basic to hot tub fireplace rooms.

Beautiful!!! Wonderful log buildings inside and out! So many beautiful plants and flowers every where! Everything is
Super clean and built with care. First time coming here, must
say we were very impressed: A touch of Christian influence, food is simply magnificent, portions are well plentiful! And let's not forget the best banana splits every nite at 8pm!!! Paddle boat's are lots of fun! Beautiful walking trail which brings you to a small private chapel built with logs of course! Must come here for a quiet relaxing getaway! You will not be sorry...

We have stayed at this delightful B and B a number of times and have enjoyed the hot tub/fireplace rooms as well as the lake view rooms in the main building. The rooms are nicely decorated - cozy and homey feeling. Each room is a little bit different. Some with hot tubs, some with one bed - others with two to meet every need of the guest! The setting is serene and relaxing on the beautiful lake. The hosts are an elderly couple who have run the place forever and are so charming and accommodating. The room rate includes a hot breakfast in the AM and HUGE banana splits in the evening with three scoops of fabulous ice cream scooped by our host. The dining area is large and beautiful with windows lining the walls for great viewing. A game area in the basement provides some way to work off that banana split! We have never been disappointed here and highly recommend this quiet little spot.

Room Tip: we have enjoyed every room - they usually give you a choice actually...
