Our stay at Danesfield was just what we needed. Fantastic staff and facilities. I would recommend anyone planning a trip to Marlow or Reading to stay there! The spa was very peaceful and Breakfast in the orangery was total bliss. The veiw from the orangery of the well maintained gardens drew you out to explore them more.
All in all, a lovely place to stay.

My wife and I had a most relaxing and enjoyable evening away. The hotel treated us to an upgrade which was very kind of them. We had a large spacious room with a good view of the Thames. Dinner was amazing - it was probably a course too far as we had to work it off in the gym the following day.

Great hotel that we've stayed at before. However, on this occasion I have never had such poor breakfast service. I waited for over an hour for bacon by which time I was told the hotel had run out of eggs! Management didn't know how to deal with complaints. At lunch the sandwich we ordered was wrong and again it took far too long to bring the correct one. Weddings appear to be the priority. Staff very polite and try to do their best but seem unable to deal with problems. Such a shame as the hotel is beautiful.

We stayed at Danesfield House over 2 nights in August.

What worked well: The hotel is set in fantastic grounds with beautiful views of the Thames. The gardens are so big, the place feels empty. We had a great view from the 1st floor room over the gardens, also a shared terrace out of the room onto the balcony. The rooms are great, really comfortable beds, though the bathrooms as expected in such an old house are quite small. We visited the SPA also, lovely pool, changing rooms and jacuzzi. Great to relax in for an hour or so with the papers. There's also a fine looking gym which we did not visit and there is more to do in the SPA. Lots of excellent restaurants in the surrounding areas, most fully booked at weekends so you obviously need to plan well in advance. Nice afternoon shopping in Marlow.

What was a bit disappointing: Service was mixed ranging from very polite and helpful to a bit poor mainly at breakfast in the Orangery. We took a while to get served there 1st day, had to send the coffee back as it resembled dirty dishwasher (surely not!) and I just ate the eggs which were a bit cold. Next day, probably due to wedding breakfast being on at same time, getting served was a problem for a number of guests , us included. Had to ask 3 times for toast, juice had run out, no cups, eggs were cold again, tables next to us were the same and bizarrely I heard them ask for the missing butter and then get directed to reception! Its just felt very very disorganised and the experience consequently suffered.

Whilst we were there the main restaurant was disappointingly closed, we ate in the Orangery on the hotel's deal where they pay the first £30/head. We managed to exceed that quite easily, i would say the food here is average though, though they do state "relaxed" in their literature. Still the prices were quite high. The Orangery is small (and same place you eat breakfast); service was excellent when we ate dinner there, so must be different staff than at breakfast time. Orangery was fully booked first night we were there so we had to go out (no big deal), nails place in SPA also fully booked for duration of visit so if you are going to visit, might be idea to book ahead for the services you would like to use. When you book a taxi from hotel you do get a luxurious 4-star car to pick you which was nice, but of course you pay a 4-star price when you get your bill!

There were 2 weddings at the hotel when we were there, it did feel a bit busy particularly in the bar on the first night when we could not get a seat. Main room off reception also reserved for weddings so there wasn't much room for non wedding guests to sit at times. We ate in our room!

Overall we did enjoy our break/visit, but it wasn't cheap and for that price, they could probably do a bit better, particularly at breakfast time.

Room Tip: Ask if there is a wedding on. On the long weekend we were there there seemed to be 2 plus a wedding...

Dear Bear858

I am dissapointed to hear that during your stay you experienced variable levels of service around the hotel, this is not the image we wish to portray to any of our guests during their time with us. Your comments have been discussed with the management team responsible for these areas at length, to help us improve in these areas.

I was glad however to see that you enjoyed your room and the amanzing views of the river thames and our beautifull gardens. I do hope to see you again at Danesfield to show to you how we have resolved these issues.

Yours Sincerely

Matthew Drinkwater

We stayed here when dining at a nearby restaurant. Whilst that dining experience was very disappointing, this hotel was not. Our room was huge and very grand with a shared terrace overlooking the gardens and the Thames beyond. After coffee with homemade chocolates on the patio, we headed to the pool and spa. Bathrobes, slippers and towels were provided and the changing room and pool areas were were modern and spotless. Breakfast was excellent, my husband and I both enjoyed the smoked salmon with scrambled egg followed by Danish pastries and coffee. Whilst this hotel was very grand it didn't feel at all stuffy and all in all we had a relaxed and very enjoyable stay.

We stayed here in two twin rooms as a treat while attending the rewind festival in Henley. Our rooms were on the ground floor, reasonably spacious, with comfortable beds. However, it was a very hot weekend and despite sleeping with every window open, we could not cool the room (no fans nor aircon). Also above us was a highly trafficked area with squeaky floorboards which was not ideal in the morning.

We had dinner in the Orangery the first night of our stay. We all agreed that the food was lovely, however, the service was pretty poor. We waited a good 15 or more minutes just to get menus, and then another long wait to order, our wine was kept somewhere way out of reach so we frequently had to signal wildly for a top up (our table was right down one end, so wait staff passed only occasionally). Although staff seemed friendly, it was all a bit chaotic - we had to ask for bread a number of times and it finally arrived after finishing our starters, our sides arrived a good 15 minutes after our mains, etc. A couple seated nearby sat down at least 40 minutes after us and had finished their desserts and coffees well before ours even arrived. To be fair, we did complain and received some deductions from our bill, as well as a complementary glass of champagne.

Similar scenes ensued at breakfast - as others have mentioned, it seems that the staff need proper training to make sure that they are attentive and responsive - eg. we had more than one staff member asking our tea and toast orders, but it would still take an inordinately long time to be delivered (and not always correct), there was a long wait for the sunday cooked breakfast as they'd not replenished the bacon, for a while there were no juice glasses etc. We noticed other people having similar issues during breakfast and evening service.

We also used the spa, and had fantastic treatments, but again, small details let down the whole experience, eg the lack of sunloungers outside meant we had to lie on the grass (with the ants), the "soothing" cd music was skipping continuously during my treatment (til i got it turned off).

Overall, the building, setting and food are lovely, the rooms are a good size etc, but hotel could be so much better with more attention to detail, and some proper training of staff in the Orangery.

i stayed in this hotel for a 2 day spa break to celebrate my birthday and our anniversary. we were in room 207- executive room with balcony;the room was very nice with a fab large bed, but the balcony is used by EVERYONE on this floor and there is NO PRIVACY. Views from the balcony over the river are great, as are the gardens. With the hot weather, we were unable to leave the windows and door open into the balcony. The pool and hot tub are tired and grungy - need cleaning and updating. Peter our butler was very helpful. I found the offer of a "risotto" by the Michelin star chef very unimaginative. instead the Thai Square in Marlowe was excellent.

Room Tip: avoid the executive rooms on the balcony unless you like an audience
