I walked the trail which was a mile in, a mile around a little lake, and the mile back, without much incline or decline. Walking around the lake was a delight. Will be walking it again in the fall when the leaves change.

I am a traditional (not skate skier) and don't care for the VASA trail because it is too busy and the fast skate skiers blast past you...like skiing on I-75.....Sand Lakes, while popular, is still a lovely, intimate, wilderness experience for the traditional cross-country skier. The different loops offer something for everyone from flat loops to crazy-good rolling hills and scenic views of little lakes. Love the pathway if you want to feel you are far away from civilization! I also like to snow-shoe (other places) but wish they would stay off the trail as it isn't machine groomed. If you are early after a snowfall you may have to break trail, but that's part of the fun!

It is also a great place to hike.....please keep your dog on a leash!

This area is about as remote as you can get in Northern Michigan... yet with nearby access to Traverse City. I have skied and hiked this area over 30 years. It is quiet and fairly representative of the boreal forests we have in this area of the midwest. The lakes are small but pretty. It is worth the time to visit if you're seeking solitude with an interesting mix of hardwoods and firs. The trails are well marked. A great getaway from the crowds.
