“Has everything you expect after looking at their website.....”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

... and then some more.

To start with the positive. It is a real nice hotel and everything you see on the their website is actually true. However, I was under the impression that it is a lot smaller than it actually is. In all fairness I have to say that this was certainly my mistake. But just to be clear, it is actually a pretty big hotel with lots of rooms, restaurants, bars, etc.

Hence my personal expectations were not completely met. In particular the big buffet restaurant for dinner & breakfast was not what I had in mind when we booked the hotel. Again, in all fairness it was the middle of the high season and the hotel was completely booked.

However, regarding restaurants be advised that the hotel operates 2 other smaller restaurants (Italian & Greek) which you can book for 1 dinner each during your stay at no extra cost provided that you have booked half board or another similar package. These restaurants fill up quickly so book already when you check in. The Italian restaurant also serves a la carte breakfast (again at no extra cost) which is really good. I do not exactly understand how you qualify for that since we got booked there by Athina the guest relation manager (who is really fantastic) after we expressed our disappointment about the buffet restaurant.

The food in the Greek restaurant and Italian restaurant is really good. The buffet restaurant has a huge selection but the food quality is pretty much what you expect from a buffet restaurant of this size.

The good news though is that despite high season in all other areas we did not experience any issues with areas being too crowded. (Pool, beach, bar).

Let's talk about the room. We had booked a suite because we were travelling with 2 adults and 2 kids. It was absolutely fantastic! Spacious, clean, well maintained and well equipped. The suite consisted of 2 rooms, 2 bathrooms and a huge terrace (appr. 50m2). Sea view at the Marbella Beach hotel really means sea view! The hotel is built on the slope of a little hill and I would expect that all rooms facing the sea actually have a real nice and unobstructed view. (See picture 2).

The service is good. Not very good measured against 5 Star standards I have experienced before. My impression was that this mainly a Greek cultural issue. Everybody was very friendly and everything got done eventually but the staff seemed not to be in a particular hurry to get it done and the process of ordering was a bit cumbersome at times. However, after 2 days and getting into the Greek mood you hardly notice it any longer.

Personally, would I go there again? Probably not in the middle of the high season. But in off peak times it is a real nice place and i doubt you find anything better on Corfu.

Travel tips: Corfu town is definitely worth a visit. The bus leaves directly in front of the hotel and gets you there nice and easy in 25 minutes for a fare of 1,70€. Twice a week there is a shuttle boat from the hotel to Corfu town. Again book early/quick.

Bottom line: Highly recommended in off peak season. Still very nice and worth the trip in high season but you should know what to expect.

We have just returned from a lovely relaxed holiday at Marbella Beach on a Half Board basis. The hotel is very clean and we found the staff within the hotel couldn’t be more helpful or friendly. The grounds are lovely and well maintained. We always found sun beds by the beach and a cabana for my elderly mother who preferred some shade.

Our room. Although disappointed by our ‘Garden View’ at first, we were subsequently grateful for the privacy and late afternoon sunshine that these rooms offered. The room was kept spotlessly clean and we all slept extremely well in the comfortable beds. WiFi connection was not a problem.

The restaurant/s. We ate relatively early each evening and specifically sat in a quieter area of the dining room (to avoid screeching children). The choice was good and the food was always fresh and well presented. We easily obtained bookings for both the greek and italian restaurants, which we all enjoyed.

Dress code. If the hotel is not going to enforce it - why have one? 50% of the men during our stay wore shorts and unfortunately, some couples did not make any effort to dress appropriately for dinner.

The wasps. The problem with wasps spoiled the joy of sitting outside and enjoying a drink in the late evening sunshine and we never ate outside for that very reason. They didn’t spoil it nearly as much as the uncontrolled children who, on occasion, seemed to run amok around the hotel. On one occasion the poor traditional greek dancers had to contend with uncontrolled children running through their dance routine. Not the hotels problem - that’s bad parenting.

Overall. We wold have no hesitation recommending this hotel and, if we ever travel to Corfu in the future, we would definitely staying here again.

The main reason for this review is to respond to the response that the hotel gave to a previous review. They seemed to suggest that the situation with the wasps was one that was only problematic at certain times of the year and that they did take the situation seriously; but if the wasps, of which there are an enormous amount, are there whilst you are trying to eat at the beach restaurant and are there whilst you are trying to relax by the pool it matters not whether it is at certain times of the year. The fact is that they are there. I know we must feel better about it because at another time of the year another family can have a relaxing holiday, despite the fact that our holiday was plagued by wasps. The hotel needs to understand that they will for a fact lose custom if they do not do significantly more to rid themselves of the wasp problem.

The fact is that this is a beautifully set resort; the rooms are beautiful and the children's pool is the best that I have experienced. It is true that the night time entertainment needs to be improved and the so called children's disco is quite frankly an embarrassment but many other aspects of the hotel are wonderful; the food; the service and the private beach will make for a beautiful holiday. If I was told that there were no more wasps and that there was a little more in the way of night time entertainment for young children I would love to go back; but until that time I would not even consider it.

I read lots of reviews before we arrived at the hotel so I was a little apprehensive. The hotel was lovely, we had upgraded to 2 superior sea view rooms which I would recommend, the views and rooms were stunning and very comfortable, thank you Amarylis for the rooms being next door to each other. The rooms were cleaned daily to a high standard. The food was good and we enjoyed eating in the Italian and Greek restaurants-no problem with booking! Both meals were very good. The seafood restaurant, although expensive was really good, the location was stunning. We also booked the boat trip organised by the hotel to Corfu Town which is free-book early. The hotel will supply a picnic if you order in advance. The service by the staff is what makes the hotel special and why would consider going back, the staff in the beach restaurant are friendly and good fun, Magda in the main restaurant-Outside area was brilliant and Nicky in the Italian always made us laugh. The a la carte in the Italian at lunchtime was excellent-good food-very few wasps, we never ate in the buffet restaurant during the day. Beach restaurant was good but lots of wasps at times.
The buffet restaurant in the evening can be busy and noisy, we therefore chose to sit outside where the insects screens are as the view is amazing and there is a really nice atmosphere-inside was a bit like a canteen. We upgraded to All Inclusive which worked well for us.
For us the biggest problem was there enormous amount of wasps that plagued us at meal times and when having drinks outside, on the beach and by the pool. After a really bad day when 2 meals were abandoned and teenage children in tears we complained to the catering manager who was brilliant and the hotel manager who we noticed during our last couple of days setting traps and monitoring the situation. The Thomson rep said that wasps are usually a problem-to eat indoors-not what we wanted as most restaurants were outside!, The manager said it is hard to treat wasps when you don't know where they are coming from. We understand that, but it needs to be on the hotel details then. The catering manager and hotel manager took it seriously and were much more active than the rep, thank you to them for at least arranging for us to eat elsewhere at breakfast and for taking the time to track us down a day or so later to see how things were. Both very professional and considerate. We very rarely complain but I really believe that if things are not right let them know so they can try to tackle the problem at the time. We will definitely consider going back.

Room Tip: upgrade to a superior se view room

Booked a sea view room BUT it was a very limited sea view room. We even went down to check with reception but were told that it was. Food was lovely, staff fine but needed more around the bar area as service slow and they were rushed off their feet. The hotel itself is very impressive and they are doing a lot to upgrade it. Unfortunately it is in the middle of nowhere and you can't walk anywhere as no pavements, just a main road.

We stayed here for 2 weeks all inclusive with a 13 year old. I had e-mailed the hotel on booking to ask for a room away from the road. I paid a lot extra to get a sea view and got a sea view room that couldn't have been any closer to the road! So we didn't get the amazing room views that other people were raving about, which was disappointing after paying so much extra. Having said that, we weren't in the room much, it was well equipped, comfortable, quiet aircon and really quiet, we slept like logs!

This hotel has a great ethic and they really do do everything they can to make sure your stay is enjoyable. They are friendly, hard working and will always do their best to help. The grounds are lovely, the views (elsewhere in the hotel) are stunning and there are plenty of places to sit. Yes the sun loungers get busy, but there is always room at the beach and sun beds become free later if you want to return to the pool.
I wasn't wowed by the food, expected more from a 5 star, but could always find something nice to eat - The Italian and Greek restaurants were lovely (do the reservations the day you arrive) and I would recommend booking at the Italian restaurant for breakfast, you can do this as often as you like and it's lovely, much quieter than the busy buffet at breakfast.
Yes, the wasps were a real pain and spoilt many a meal outside. We loved the restaurant outside and the beach restaurant but got sick of wasps crawling all over our food. Only saw a few wasp traps towards the end of the holiday and they really did need more.
Do take the hotel boat trip round to Corfu town - especially the evening trip, it's a lovely boat ride and a beautiful town with a great atmosphere, cafes, architecture and shops.
We also did the hike on the Friday morning over to a local town and taverna, it's steep but worthwhile to see a change of scene outside the hotel.
The sports and animation is Very low key and you wouldn't really notice anything was going on. There wasn't really enough for our 13 year old and the hotel really doesn't cater for the teenage age group. There were a few pool tables but they were down by the children's pool where it's dark and deserted at night, they would be better relocated behind reception so that older children have somewhere to congregate, there was nothing for them unless they happened to find a friend and the entertainment of no interest to them at all. The hotel is quite dull in the evening, the entertainment is lame and the new venue downstairs, awful, completely lacking in atmosphere - could be so much better. We found the bar was dying down by about 11.30 each evening which was disappointing.
I may have highlighted a few negatives, but overall, it is a lovely hotel and we did have a great time - maybe next time go as two adults outside the school holidays.

Room Tip: Better views higher up, but blocks separate from the main building are nice and quiet.

Arrival reception was poor. Was left sitting at reception with no explanation as to why, until it asked and was advised my room was not ready.

My room with an apparent Garden View was of a brick wall, which separated us from the noisy main road.

The children's beds were sofa's, not real beds and were quite hard.

The wardrobe area was very small and having 2 adults & 2 children in the room would make it a struggle to hang everything up.

The hotel is on a mountainside not a hillside. The website does not provide Any description as to how severe the climb is. The point is hugely misrepresented.

The Wifi within the hotel is appalling. This was one of the main reasons for booking the hotel, the fact it was free and coverage was supposedly throughout the hotel. The signal would drop every time you moved 25 yards and then had to go through a laborious procedure to reconnect. As a guide to how poor the wifi was, I could not download The Time newspaper, which I do everyday at home on standard broadband.

There were too manly trainee waitresses. They did not provide a 5 star service.

The pool/beach towels ran out regularly, there were far too few in the hotel. An a guide, in the last 3 days, I could not change my towel as they had run out by midday.

There were insufficient sunbeds around the main pool. Some people were reserving them the night before. At the children's pool area, none of the sunbeds had cushions. I do not think the hotel has sufficient beds to satisfy its residents towards full capacity, bearing in mind we were there before the schools broke up in the UK.

Whilst the hotel has 3 further restaurant in addition to the Main, after the 2nd day of our week long stay, I was unable to book the Italian as it was full in the evening until after we had left.

The food selection within the main restaurant is also average for a 5 star hotel. There was not enough plain food, without a sauce for children, other than burger and chips.

This is not a 5 star hotel, it is also overpriced for what it provides and the facilities are insufficient for it size. It has some good facets such as the kids club, albeit small, the staff are very good and keep the children very well entertained and organised.

The hotel also has a water slide which is very popular with the children.

The only thing that saves this hotel are the staff who are very friendly, polite and helpful.

Thank you for your review on MarBella Corfu Hotel in Trip Advisor.
We value your comments in all aspects, as they are all guide to offer remarkable holidays experiences to our guests.
Yet sometimes without willing it promotes some misinformation, so we would like to take it one by one.
Check in time is 14:00 and it is a standard time in all hotels. Reception staff always communicates it on arrival and we believe they would not ask guest to wait without given a reason.
You probably had a Superior Family Room with Garden view situated on the Nafsika Building with a large garden ground with grass and trees in front. The wall that separated the hotel from the road is there for an important reason which is the soundproof system that avoids noise from the road.
All rooms in hotel which accommodates over 2 persons have sofa beds, a part of the Suite with 2 bedrooms where you can have 2 single beds, an exceptional choice for families too.
Wi-fi is available on all hotel grounds and the coverage is not 100% but about 90% and depends on the time of demand. Our IT manager is always available shall guests need any further support.
The hotel has a number of trainees always supervised by a professional. They are the professionals of the future and it is a practice used by all great hotels.
Towels are available at the pool and if they finish the pool boys are there to assist on the refill.
The hotel rules say that if sunbeds are reserved and unattended over 1 hour the belongings are collected in order to free the place. All items can be collected at the Pool stand with the pool boy available.
We regret we did not have the chance to clear all above point while you were here but remain at your disposal.

Best regards,
MarBella Corfu Hotel Team
