“Another magical stay”
Reviewed 18 July 2014

We have just returned from our second stay. It was as wonderful as the first time and lots of familiar staff faces to welcome us back. We love Soar Mill as you can just relax and nothing is too much trouble for them - they even gave us some spare bits of raw bacon so that our girls could go crabbing. Whether it be eating, drinking, playing tennis, going swimming or reading in the lounge you just feel so cocooned from the perils of the real world. Matt The Manager and Edita in the restaurant re especially good and ooze natural hospitality. The Makepeace family are very visible and chatty. In summary, they offer a great location, fantastic service and such a relaxing atmosphere. Our 2 young girls were treated like royalty - as were we.

As always a pleasure to welcome you back, nothing better than seeing familiar faces. Your children are truly delightful, Oscar the horse felt much loved. Matt and Edita have been with us for going on 12 years and there enthusiasm for looking after the guests never fades. I’ll be sure to pass my congratulations on to them. I look forward to welcoming you back and hope you have a wonderful summer.

Our rating is the result of a blend.

The 5 star elements are: (1) The setting is beautiful. High, with the views out to sea. It feels remote as you rattle down the 2 miles or so of narrow road, leaving mobile reception behind you, eventually sweeping up the driveway . (2) The restaurant is a lovely large relaxed modern room with full size picture windows looking out at the view (same for the sitting room). (3) The food is excellent. Lots of variety. Our stay was for a number of days and thought the food consistently excellent. They ask you to order early evening and select a time for dinner, which seems such a blindingly obvious thing to do in a hotel I wonder why more don't do it, as it allows the kitchen to prep everything well in advance rather than with a short lead in. (4) There is a very modern swimming pool/sauna area. (5) Somehow it is all just very relaxing.

3 Star: (1) the room, while large and with beautiful views on the sea view side, have relatively bland interiors (but nice beds and overall very comfortable). Our bathroom was large but now quite dated, with a temperamental shower mixer that could scale or freeze you depending on its mood. Blue tacked notices on the wall add to the time warp feel. (2) Our greeting on arrival was efficient but neutral and felt like we were checking in for one night at a motel, rather than several nights for a holiday. The 'joy des vacances' was sort of sucked out of the air, after our excitement at arriving after several hours of journey. (Indeed it generally felt like a bit motel like: we were anonymous throughout the week in that no-one ever referred to us by name; we were a room. This was not a big deal at all and we weren't expecting to be swept in like long lost friends, but the anonymity was just slightly at odds with the emphasis on family run feel that the website puts out so strongly).

We thought the food/wine list very good value for the quality. We were however surprised at the standard £10 charge per dish for our one year old child even for e.g. a one egg cheese omelette or a small cheesy pasta dish (there are no prices on the children's menu and you never sign for anything, so this was only apparent at the end when we settled the bill). We were not sure at the outset what the terms were for children, as the website or a booklet in the room suggests children under two are not charged for at all, but no charge would not seem fair given dishes were specially prepared – but then £10 a pop seemed to go the other way. Anyway we wanted to get away on the final day rather than argue over these amounts, and felt overall that the food/drink had been good value when taking ours into account. The other issue, relatively minor, was that we asked on arrival if we could pre-order full fat milk for our child (we were happy to pay for it). No was the answer, only half fat could be available but we could go to the local service station to buy milk and then store it in a guests' fridge. Just felt a bit inflexible.

There was an issue when we arrived in that our bathroom had the remnants of the last, hairy, room occupants matted into the corners on the floor. This was something we realised while getting ready for dinner, and it wasn't a nice start to the evening. I asked for a deep clean the next day, and presume it took place as the bathroom seemed fine after that. It did seem odd that it never warranted any further mention. I would have thought, particularly at these prices, that this would be considered a serious breach, with a follow up to emphasis to the guests that this was taken seriously. There was certainly an apology when we initially called reception, but no further check was made that we were happier about the bathroom after it was cleaned. With the initial check-in experience, the 'go to the service station for milk' response, and the bathroom cleanliness situation, and a couple of other minor issues during the first morning (that of themselves were nothing substantial but heaped on the other factors didn't help), we did in fact discuss the next day whether we should just leave and go down to the Headland Hotel in Cornwall if they had room, but in the end decided not to. We're really glad we didn't, as the place grows on you and in the end we felt we could have stayed another few days. But the hotel remained oblivious to the initial and real disappointment of new clients who had looked forward to their extended holiday, but whose check in had been underwhelming and whose bathroom was unclean. We so nearly left…reminds me of that Sliding Doors film where two alterative scenarios play out: the one that didn't happen in this case was the demand for money back, the drive to Cornwall, the re-settling of ourselves….

But, at the end of the day and after getting through the remainder of our stay without further incident, we would certainly recommend this hotel. It is lovely, with some kind staff in the dining room, and a gentle vibe that is highly relaxing. We recommend however that before you hand over your credit card on arrival (they require payment of all upfront at check-in) insist on checking your bathroom first to see if it is clean. If it is, then after that, it'll be fine.

Room Tip: A sea view room is a must

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a detailed review. I’m delighted that you had an enjoyable stay and I’m very pleased to hear that you decided not to cut your holiday short. As a team we are always striving to improve, with an ambition to ensure that we continue to give 100% in all areas of the hotel. I suggest that you give me a call personally to discuss your ideal room if you decide to return, many of our rooms have been transformed and most have a modern on-suite. I will take some time and look into some of your suggestions/concerns and ensure I work upon them. Once again thank you for your review.

Over the last few years we have re-visited hotels and found a few of their special touches missing, obviously due to having to cut costs etc. Soar mill cove hotel however is getting better and better and on this occasion (our 3rd visit) we noticed a vast improvement to the leisure area and pool. Matt on reception was his usual self, friendly and welcoming, the rest of the family and staff were all fantastic too. We were a party of 8 in 3 rooms and all agree that Soar mill cove hotel is like home away from home because it has such a great relaxed feel about it. We opted for the fillet steak in the evening and it was perfect, all the food was fantastic and we can't recommend this hotel and restaurant enough. It's not cheap but we will be back for sure.

Room Tip: I don't think there is a bad room, they are all on the ground floor!

A friend recommended this hotel, and I booked for one night's dinner bed & breakfast to celebrate my husband's birthday (we live about 15 miles away, but driving around here after a good meal and drink is not advisable!). It was so good, we stayed for an extra night and also booked for a Christmas break, The rooms are large and comfortable, the food is lovely, and the hotel has great views over the sea. The welcome was genuinely warm - special thanks to Matt and Becky on reception.

Room Tip: It's worth paying a bit extra for a room with a sea view - especially if like us you don't f...

We stayed 5th to the 9th of July with all of our family 11 of us.... My grandad slipped on the pool side due to his age and being a little unstable broke his leg.... But the staff particularly Matt on reception were very helpful. My family were at the beach at the time and he ran down to the them impressive.... But then ran back up to the hotel.... Even more impressive as I was out of breath just walking back from the beach. Can't thank you enough for that Matt.

Now the rooms well they were very well kept and working in a hotel myself I know what to look for. Not a speck of dust anywhere and be live me I checked :)

Food and service were second to non I put on a few pounds (did not go down well with wife to be) busy it was so good. The waitress Jess was lovely always smiling and she seemed to do so much there at breakfast cleaned the rooms and back for dinner service amazing thank you.

I apologize I didn't get all the staff members names but you all where so nice and helpful.

Thank you again from the King family. All the best to Jess I hope you see your family soon

I’m delighted that you all had such a lovely family holiday despite the unexpected accident. Matt seems to cope very well with everything that is thrown at him, once again he has proved to be a relaxed head in an emergency. Jess indeed deserves plenty of praise! she always has a smile on her face and is a very important member of the team. I’ll be sure to congratulate all the staff for looking after you so well. I hope that Mr King makes a full recovery and we can welcome you back next year.

The road to this hotel is narrow but it is short, and when you arrive, the view is exquisite. It is near the Coast path so there are delightful walks immediately from the hotel. The rooms are comfortable and the food was of the highest quality with emphasis on home made dishes, jams etc. There is a convenient washing machine and drier available for no charge. The hotel is small so booking early is essential. The staff are extremely helpful. With all the walking I needed a podiatrist. They found one for me who had a vacancy and made the appointment. I look forward to the next visit.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a room that takes full advantage of the magnificent view

I rang to book for lunch. No problem. Just come. We did but were told the lunch menu of two courses for £15 wasn't available. The menu offered was very limited and not what we wanted. The people on the next table were in the same position. We will not be returning.

I’m sorry that you left so disappointed; clearly we made an advertising error. We are just about to launch a new exciting lunch menu with some very tasty sharing plates, in the hope that we can add something extra special to a daytime at the Cove.
