We stayed at the Al Husn Hotel - adults only - and we were relieved about that.
Although it's part of the Shangri La resort complex of 3 hotels, guests from the other 2 hotels can't use the facilities. Guests at Al Husn can use the facilities of the other hotels - not sure why you'd want to as they're both very busy, fairly noisy and there are lots of children even outside of school holiday time!
I'll focus on the Al Husn.
It's a large hotel and quite impersonal. The staff are friendly and almost all do their jobs well.
We were lucky and were given our room straight away after an overnight flight.
The pool and beach service was a bit hit and miss although little cooler boxes of water and Evian spray are very welcome on extremely hot days.
The room was a decent size . Very practical and quite business-like. you wouldn't know you were in Oman as there are no traditional touches.
Breakfast was of a high standard. Plenty of choice. It was fresh, clean and tasty.
The 2 restaurants at Al Husn are good.
Although the jazz and grill night sounds expensive, it is worth it.
For other restaurants, you have to go to the other hotels.
They are nothing special but they are a lot cheaper and there's more choice than at Al Husn.
The tapas restaurant is quite tasty but you can't book so can be waiting a while. Al Tandoor also doesn't take reservations - it is a massive buffet and feels a little like a noisy cafe.
The Italian takes reservations. The staff are really lovely but the food is a bit boring.
The complimentary drinks between 6-7pm is a great idea. Drinks are very expensive- almost £20 for an average Australian glass of Chardonnay - but you're on holiday so you accept it.
The hotel really lacks an outside bar area where you can go after dinner to relax. After eating, there's really nowhere to go.

Would I recommend it?
The weather is amazing and everything 'works'. The staff are super and well trained..... but you could be in any 5* hotel anywhere in the world. I haven't learned anything about Oman or its culture.
So for a week of sunbathing, go for it.

Will I return?
Probably not - and I can't really put my finger on why!

We had a wonderful, quiet, romantic stay. The sea view room was beautiful; well equipped, tastefully decorated and with an uninterrupted sea view. The staff are attentive and you feel the warmth of Omani hospitality everywhere you go. The food was great and there is so much choice because Al Husn guest have access to all 3 hotels in the resort. There is even a little comedy when guests occasionally fall in the water during pre-diner drinks, so do be careful. The only down side is occasionally having to listen to people who have no grip on reality complain because they are brought the wrong sort of milk or some similar disaster. Even brilliant hotels will make occasional mistakes.

We visit a lot of hotels around the world including Shangri la establishments but The Al Husn in Muscat is the best yet.
When we leave a hotel, there are usually a few niggles to report but with the Al Husn there was really nothing to complain about.
The location is superb with its own private beach. The members staff are outstanding , being helpful, friendly and determined to sort out anything you may want. Particularly Robert Feints who manages the main restaurant. If you have a problem he seems to be able to get it sorted ASAP.
The building is beautiful in typical Islamic style and the level of maintenance is first class.
There is a good swimming pool with plenty of sunbeds and the pool staff provide good service at all times. Similarly the private beach is well supplied with equipment and first class staff.
There are two other hotels as part of the complex and their facilities are available for your use.
Plenty of eating places are available all with excellent food. The Sultanah and Shahrazad are the main restaurants in the hotel, both with superb food. The Italian and Tapas in the Al Bander are also good plus you can use the Al Bander buffet all of which we can recommend.
This is high class hotel and so is not a place to stay on a budget. Food and drink are expensive but high quality.
We stayed for 2 weeks and the bill for the whole package for two people including air fares, transfers and food came to around £7,000.
If you are looking for a special holiday give this place a try. Well worth the money.

Lovely spot for families, I don't have to repeat the rave reviews about the amazing pool, splash park, beach, lazy river, etc. This place clearly has amazing facilities and is built around making fun holidays for families. But what you don't find every day is an incredible, friendly and honest team of staff. I left a valuable necklace and earrings in my room, and was able to quickly confirm with the housekeeping team once I reached home, that they had found them and would be keeping them in a safe until it could be returned. Every step of the way I had great responsive communication and thoughtful help. Danica and her staff are top notch, and that goes a long way when something unexpected happens. I will be forever grateful to Inayatullah Mukadam who found my very special necklace.

If you are looking for a tranquil holiday setting for relaxing in the sunshine ....this is it ! The Shangri La Al Husn achieves all of this and more. The hotel is luxurious and there are many high end touches as described in all the reviews. The attention to detail is second to none and every single member of staff were friendly, extremely courteous and a credit to the company .A special thank you to Robert (food & beverages manager) who looked after us so well during our 12 night stay.
The rocky scenery is quite dramatic and there are plenty of trips available from the hotel if you want to get out and about to explore .We thoroughly enjoyed the 2 excursions we booked through the hotel concierge with Zaffira tours. Our guide was friendly, informative and fun .It was hot & you do have to cover up ladies, but then it's wonderful to return to your very own Shangri la for more rest& relaxation & pampering.
We thought of 3 things that would make this hotel absolutely perfect :-
* We thoroughly enjoyed the evening ritual of complimentary drinks in the square between 6-7 pm .It is a great ice breaker as you meet lots of other couples to chat to .However it would be great if an indoor (air conditioned) bar was provided so if your dinner reservation was later you could go to the bar first.
*The lunchtime menu at the beach bar at the Al Husn private beach is less extensive than the beach bar at Al Bandar.
*I saw a few people (myself included) trying to read their book or kindle whist standing in the pool or sitting on the side . I think the lower tier of the infinity pool would be ideal for installing the tiled sun loungers half submerged in the water for lounging / reading whilst keeping cool & acquiring a great tan ( they already have them at the Al Bandar but the kids love to play on them !)
In conclusion if you are travelling with children the Al Bandar is a great option , if you are a couple wanting peace & quiet definitely choose the Al Husn .We had a fantastic holiday & we returned to the U.K feeling completely relaxed& re-energised,exactly how a great holiday should make you feel.Thankyou Milan & all the hardworking team .

Dear michele_nutt, Thank you for your great review of your recent stay in Al Husn Hotel. I am overwhelmed to read positive reviews such as yours and we are humbled that you were able to experience true Asian and Omani hospitality in our resort. I am also pleased that you enjoyed our beautiful surroundings as it is definitely one of the blessings of this location. Oman is a a beautiful country with with a deep-rooted heritage and culture. The first thing that often strikes visitors to Oman is its dramatic and varied landscape and definitely the friendliness of the local people. I am lucky that I have a great team and a beautiful location which make it the perfect venue for both business and pleasure.

The whole team is grateful of the opportunity of being in service with you and we are looking forward to the pleasure of welcoming you back to our resort in the near future. Warm regards, Milan.
