Timber Bay Lodge and Houseboats
Reviewed 5 August 2014

We have been coming to Timber Bay for over 11 years and love every trip. We've been in several different cabins, most recently in cabin#10 which was cozy, comfortable and spacious. Between biking, fishing, running, women's champaign cruise, kids club, bonfire, BBQ, volleyball and swimming and tubing on the lake, there is always something to do for everyone. My favorite part is that the owners make you feel like you are part of the family. Beth, Ron, Cortney and Bailey +staff are wonderful hosts. We made some great memories and pictures here with family and friends and always come as a large group. Its a small and safe place so kids run around and adults have some time to themselves. Love coming back each year and highly recommend the place!

Superbly organized operation. This is our 2nd time at this resort, first time renting their houseboats.
This lake is a gem. It has all the beauty of the boundary waters (Canadian Shield type lake), yet you can motor boat all over its largely undeveloped shoreline. The houseboat route allows you to be smacked down in the middle of nowhere, with camping style intimacy with nature, without the ruffing it of camping. Cruising along at 15 feet above lake level provides great views.

The owners are very friendly and run a very tight and tidy ship. Houseboats are a bit old, but well maintained. They do a good job of explaining how to drive/park the boats.

The resort is beautiful, with plentiful big pines, and a rarity in this type of lake - a great beach. Another rarity around Ely is a great children's program. My daughter loved it.

Its not an inexpensive resort, but a good value given the amenities.

We have been to timber bay twice. We have stayed in two different cabins and have rented boats. The cabins are clean and well maintained, as are the boats. The staff is friendly and the owners are great people. A good fishing lake and 2 miles from a grocery store. There is dish tv in all the cabins. There is internet at the cabins closest to the office. There are lots of outdoor activities for family members, including bikes you can borrow and ride. This is a great place and I recommend taking your whole family. We will be going back next year.

Room Tip: I have been in many of the cabins. Just choose the one that best accommodates your family, because...

It's hard to fit all things amazing Timber Bay Lodge into a small paragraph. My family has been visiting TBL for 25+ years and counting. From amazing fishing, breathtaking sunsets reflected onto Birch Lake, water skiing, swimming in a lake underneath the summer sun, taking hikes in the dense pines, starry nights, a cozy cabin, to sitting on the deck just to 'take it all in' and relax, Timber Bay is what I look forward to every year!! This place is a perfect getaway for family, couples, newly weds, friends, and fishermen! I've experience this place as a child, teen, adult, and now an adult who actually enjoys fishing! Yes, it grows on you! Growing up, I attended the amazing Children's program they offer. To this day, I remember the crafts, naturalist hikes around camp, pontoon rides, and the camp songs. Some of those songs are still sung around the bonfire on Friday nights! Tubeing, teen cookouts, volleyball, canoeing, wildlife, ladies cruise... endless possibilities of fun! On top of everything beautiful and serene, it wouldn't feel like home away from home, if it weren't for Timber Bay's hosts, The Rykken's. They and dedicated staff go out of their way to make sure you have those lifetime moments- I know we do every year!!

We just spent 2 weeks at Timber Bay.... as we have for the last 16 yrs. Our children were 8 and 11 at the first visit, and now, as adults, they still look forward to joining us each summer. The resort is impeccably run by Ron and Beth Rykken. We 've noticed that numerous other families return yearly, which clearly speaks to the quality and enjoyment Timber Bay offers. Both the cabins and houseboats offer a great experience. Birch Lake is absolutely beautiful and uncrowded. Ely is short drive for shopping and to visit Lynn Rogers' American Bear Center, International Wolf Center, or the Brandenburg Gallery. We'll be back again next year!

Rented a 30' houseboat. Was a great time. Many islands to explore and a variety of wildlife. Plenty of places to dockbthe boat. Bed was surprising comfortable. Recommend renting a small boat to fish. We will definitely return.

Rented the 35 foot houseboat for a whole week at the end of June. Our two 8 year-olds were on cloud nine the whole time. Beautiful sunsets, fish so big I doubted the species (who knew smallmouths could get over 6 lbs!), loons calling at night. Gorgeous sand bottom coves to swim and fly down the slide. It does not get any better than this.
