“Love at First Sight”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2014

My husband and I have stayed at Cove Point several times to celebrate our anniversary. This year we decided to take our daughter. We all adore the spectacular views and the friendly atmosphere. We have created rituals like going out to the point after breakfast and eating smores at the campfire each evening. We love the location: quaint Beaver Bay which is not far away from Split Rock Light house or Gooseberry Falls. We also love traveling to Grand Marais and Duluth during our stay. There are numerous trails for hiking and biking and it is close to several other state parks. You can have fun outdoors or stay inside reading or playing a board game by the incredible fireplace in the lobby while enjoying the breathtaking view.

The lodge has an incredible Scandinavian breakfast. It is my favorite breakfast in the entire world! For lunch and dinner you have the option of eating in the lodge at their restaurant which has a seasonal menu or you can walk down to the Crossings for burgers, sandwiches, salads, or pizza.

We have stayed in a regular lodge room, a state room, and a cottage and have loved all experiences. We have traveled in both the fall and summer. We highly recommend Cove Point to any couple or family as we are anxiously awaiting our next family vacation at Cove Point.

Room Tip: Regular rooms in the lodge are great if you're on a budget. The state rooms are perfect for cou...

We spent 4 nights at the lodge and found it to be very pleasant. We had a cozy room with queen bed and a sofa. The deck had 2 chairs for enjoying the view of Lake Superior. The location on Hwy 61 made it wonderful for going farther north to day hike at the many beautiful state parks along the shore.
All of the staff we met were friendly and helpful.
I enjoyed walking out to the point to watch the sunrise, climbing on rocks along the shore and wading in that refreshing water - some would say cold.
There are plenty of books to borrow, board games to play and a lovely fireplace in the main area. Also evening fire outside for roasting marshmallows
We enjoyed our stay and would consider going back.

We love everything about this place. We come here again and again and will again and again. Location, location, location -- halfway between Duluth and Canada with so much natural beauty in every direction. A great place to do nothing and do everything outdoors you could ever want to do. Friendly accommodating staff, great breakfast, and dinner options.

LOCATION:
Just about 5 minutes north of Split Rock Lighthouse, so we felt it was closer to the Duluth end (vs. closer to Lutsen), but just far enough out of Duluth (and Two Harbors) to not be 'commercialized'.
It's on the lakeshore and is put back from Hwy 61 just enough to not hear as much traffic as you might on at, let's say, BlueFin. Great spot, but do not stay here if you want to be close to Lutsen.
HOTEL.
It's a north woods sorta property. Everything is covered in wood (in a good way!). Each room faces the lake. The windows facing the lot are only hallway. It has both a main property (for rooms), and also cottages down the road/path. We stayed in the main property…
ROOM:
We stayed in the least expensive room (the "queen room with loveseat.")
This room we felt had its value. It wasn't fancy by any means, however the value from the property, the view, the sounds from the view (waves on rocks), and the location I feel transfers to the room. There's a room upgrade to with a hot tub, but it'd be much better if the tub weren't in the rear of the room. The upgrade from there has a patio/deck. While this is certainly nice to have, I felt that by pushing a chair up to our window we got the same effect with a lesser cost. Oh, and the property has plenty of chairs on the lakeshore to not really warrant a deck (unless you want that nicety). As far as towels, sheets, furniture, shower, etc…..average of course.
OTHER:
The lakeshore for sitting and sipping wine, having a bonfire and s'mores, an early AM coffee, a hike to their 'cove point,' sitting in the lobby by the fire and playing games, having a cocktail, etc. - all GREAT! We don't have kids, but they do have a pool that the kids would enjoy, and a hot tub for all. The kids may also enjoy the hikes out to the point, on the rocks, etc.

Thanks for a great stay guys!

Room Tip: All face the water, so you can't complain. If you want value, go for the cheapest (queen lovese...

We chose to stay at Cove Point the night before we headed on a BWCA journey and I'm honestly convinced we couldn't have made a better choice.

The lobby area was beautiful and there was an extremely kind gal at the check-in counter whose welcoming attitude really did more to set the tone for our stay than I think she realized. She got us keys, explained the amenities, and made a few personal suggestions for myself and the friend I was traveling with. Within a matter of minutes we felt at home and spent the next hour or so going through our canoe gear for the next day.

We got to enjoy the pool, sauna and hot tub for an hour or so before it closed and between a comfortable room, the north-woods feel of the whole building, the cleanliness and attention to detail and the promise of a great view while enjoying a Scandinavian breakfast, and now sitting in a relaxing hot tub, we realized that what had meant to just be a quick place to get some shut eye had actually become the start of our vacation!

We woke up the next morning, had our breakfast, LOVED the view (Cove Point, at least the lodge we stayed in, is quite close to the lake...a literal stone's throw if that) and went over our BWCA maps over coffee. I would call anyone who doesn't love the Scandinavian Breakfast a fuddy-duddy. My travel partner and I both gave it a thumbs up.

Checkout was a breeze and 14 hours after arriving we were off. Wish we could have stayed longer, taken a hike out to the point, etc, but we've definitely just found our new favorite place to stage future adventures up north!

See you again this fall Cove Point!

Peg and I took a mini vacation to the north shore. Rather than staying in Duluth, we decided to go further north. The Cove Point is situated perfectly to explore the north shore. It is an easy trip to the state parks which surround it, and Grand Marais, for more of a tourist experience. We enjoyed hiking in the parks and being able to go back, and put our feet up after a busy day. The staff at the front desk had suggestions for activities and restaurants which were spot on. The room was clean and the deck we had made for nice evenings looking at Lake Superior while enjoying a book. We went to recharge our batteries and came back fully charge.

We have stayed at Cove Point lodge on two ocassions over the last few years. It is a wonderful place to stay to take in the beauty of northern Minnesota. Very well maintained property in a beautiful location. My only complaint is that the rooms are a tad on the small side, but its a minor complaint. We hope to stay here again in the future.
