“Really enjoyable stay but rooms are a little tired in some areas”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

Stayed at this hotel as part of a secret escapes deal. The facilities were great, with full use of their spa, gym and swimming facilities, and the grounds were nice, giving you an extremely pleasant view to look at if you go for a walk.

The breakfast is the typical buffet layout, but they also have things off the buffet cart that you can order, also free of charge e.g. Vegetarian sausages, poached eggs etc, which I thought was really good. The breakfast was of a good standard with a lot to pick from.

We had dinner here as well, and we're not disappointed at all, the fish was incredibly fresh and the whole meal was cooked to a very high standard. I would greatly recommend having dinner here!

The rooms were of a very decent size, spacious and with all the amenities you need, and would expect of a hotel of this rating. The only minor comment I have about this hotel is that the rooms are starting to look a little worn, and could probably do with a touch up. The leather headboard what beginning to peal and flake which wasn't great, but that didn't effect us whatsoever, it's just not aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

However I would really recommend this hotel,,we had a great stay and really really enjoyed ourselves.

Dear CTong_1991,

Thank you for your review following your recent stay here with us at Shrigley Hall Hotel, part of The Hotel Collection. It is great to read of your enjoyable stay in which you made full use of our hotel facilities, along with the great planned walks around our stunning grounds. I am delighted from the breakfast buffet, with its added extras to order, to the dinner, you found the food of a very high standard and incredibly fresh. Some of our rooms are a little dated and in need of touch ups we agree, however with the size of the hotel this does take time in which we have made a start and will continue to run with this. I hope you will visit us again to experience further great stays.

Kind Regards
Saffron

We met a couple who we know from South Africa for a two day/one night golf break.
All four of us thoroughly enjoyed the stay.
The golf course is very interesting and full of character. Lots of different holes, although the greens were a little uneven. The weather on Day 1 was wild but on this elevated position that is to be expected sometimes. Day 2 was completely different, sunny with no wind.
The hotel was elegant and comfortable. The dinner, priced at £25 for three courses, was good value. The prices of drinks were reasonable for a hotel.

Stayed as part of a golf package. Beautiful surroundings and building. All staff in reception, bar and restaurant all excellent, friendly and polite. Light and airy reception and bar area. Our room 143 seemed dark but facing on to the trees it was enevitable, clean and tidy with all you would expect. Restaurant seems a little snall given the size of the hotel. The food from the set menu was of a high standard and well presented, but where was it?, after over 4 hours on a golf course in the fresh air we needed filling, but the portions were so small, I honesty could have eaten another sitting. Breakfast was buffet style and good, but in a hotel of this quality I would expect to be served my tea or coffee, not help myself from a machine! The golf course is a good test, with a variety of different holes, if you are not used to a hilly course, a buggy is a must at £25. Fairways in not bad condition, but the greens need some serious tlc, not as good as my local municipal tbh.

Dear frazrammie,

Thank you for your review following your recent stay here with us at Shrigley Hall Hotel, part of The Hotel Collection. I am glad we presented beautiful surroundings for your golf package. I apologise that the restaurant food wasn't filling enough for you, with it being a rosette restaurant it is a smaller portion size of like you mentioned very high standard food. Thank you for your feedback in regards to breakfast we are working very hard to change the service to tea & coffee which will be converting very soon. I will take your comments back to our golf team about the greens, and thank you for the praise for our friendly and polite staff. We hope you return to enjoy further golfing breaks in the near future.

Lovely family room, fantastic comfortable beds and very decent obliging staff. Ideally placed for touring some areas of Derbyshire as well as that part of Cheshire. We used it as a base from which to visit Buxton in Derbyshire but also enjoyed Tatton Park near Altrincham. Would certainly stay here again.

Set in the most beautiful location in Cheshire, this hotel was a disappointment as soon as we checked in. Our room had no view or window, which we were not made aware of when checking in and a terrible smell of sewerage in the bathroom and hallway. Spa bath was broken, nasty hard stain on carpet. Room service had a great modern menu, which was very incongruous with the dated feel of both the hotel and it's rooms. Although prompt to order and deliver we were told by both the waiter and waitress not to tip, as the tips added to the bill never actually got to the waiters themselves, so unless it was cash 'don't bother'.
It's such a shame that this hotel has slipped, as you can see it was once a grand place to stay. The spa is also tired, the staff were particularly unfriendly, continuing to ignore you whilst tapping away on the computer whilst you stood there like lemons. The changing rooms were awful, lockers broken, shower cubicles dirty and cramped.
I wouldn't recommend this hotel. The staff have not be trained to greet you, nobody looked happy to work at Shrigley Hall. Hotel guests should feel special, this isn't the case at Shrigley, nobody cares. The breakfast was diabolical, over cooked service station quality, Tea and coffee wasn't even served at the table, but from vending machines. The coffee was SO bad we couldn't drink it and decided to get proper coffee in town.
Such a shame, great location, beautiful countryside, great building with so much potential. Would so benefit with some structured staff training and a revamp of both the rooms and breakfast offering.

Room Tip: Check your room is in the main building and also has a window.

Dear Boystar,

Thank you for your review following your recent stay here with us at Shrigley Hall Hotel. I am upset that you left disappointed, the Premium room you stayed in is a unique room with no window and has mixed reviews from guests, so I will ensure reception are letting guests aware of this feature. Our hotel is very old and we like to keep quite a lot of its traditional decor, however we are adding in touches of modernisation slowly. I will ensure to sit with the staff and make sure they are aware of how the gratuities on bills are split. I do apologise you didn’t feel special from our staff, the team normally get such valued praise for their friendliness, so I am sorry this didn't come across during your stay. The breakfast specification is currently being looked at and revised to offer tea & coffee to the tables, so this will be implemented very soon. Thank you for your lovely comments about our location and building, I just hope you return again to enjoy the full service package and experience the positive improvements being made.

Kind Regards

My wife and I stayed at Shrigley Hall for two nights for a birthday celebration. Overall we had a very pleasant stay. Better signage or pre-instructions would have made arrival at reception easier as we carried our bags up and down dale before we got there from the car park. On arrival, reception was friendly and efficient. We were given a room (250) at the far end of this quite large hotel and we had a job negotiating the stairs, long corridors and lifts with our luggage. Worth thinking about for the old or infirmed. A helpful room maid assisted us with directions. We discovered later that the hotel can be accessed directly from the car park and this helped when we left.
The room was very clean, neat and tidy but a rather odd shape for a double as the sloping roof made ingress into bed a little awkward. Either needs to be a single or needs furniture rearrangement. Outlook was good, over trees and a putting green.
Our pre-booked afternoon tea was delicious and we enjoyed it very much. The courtyard bar was nice with funny waving fan “things” well worth seeing! There were a lot of uncleared tables, not a good look for a “posh” hotel.
We ate two dinners at the hotel. The food was delicious and served hot by excellent staff in a dining room with a good atmosphere.
We didn’t get time to explore the extensive grounds because of the inclement weather but I’m sure that would be a good way to spend some time if you are neither golfers nor spa lovers.
The entrance hall near reception has a fantastic domed ceiling over the staircase which should not be missed.
Breakfasts were as good as dinners with excellent choice and tasty food. Again we noted one morning a lot of uncleared tables and some staff stood round chatting when their time might have been better spent. Again however level of service to our table and staff attitude was excellent. I think a major domo patrolling the breakfast room to ensure swift table clearance and re-set would be a good idea.

Room Tip: Ask about room location before you arrive to avoid "The Never Ending Story" as the room ma...

Dear aaandykov,

Thank you for your review following your recent stay here with us at Shrigley Hall Hotel, part of The Hotel Collection. I apologise you experienced confusion over the location of your room, our reception team should have informed you of the rear car park entrance to allow for ease with finding your room. Thank you for your view on the room layout, I will have our housekeeping manager look at this. It is nice you found interest within the hotel from the fans in the Courtyard roof to the amazing entrance hall. It is lovely you enjoyed great choice with the delicious food, served by our excellent staff and I will relay your comments to our breakfast supervisor for swift relay. I hope that you return in the near future to explore the grounds that the weather permitted you to see, there is lots more to experience.

Myself and 7 friends came to Shrigley Hall to celebrate a birthday and we had a really good time.

Pros - the spa is fantastic - it wasn't too busy, the treatments we had were excellent, afternoon tea was lovely although we couldn't have this within the spa area and the dinner/breakfast in the evening was delicious

Cons - some of the rooms are dated and need a considerable makeover. There was some confusion as to whether we could wear robe and slippers to afternoon tea in the main hotel - of course on a spa break we didn't want to have to get fully dressed half way through the day so it would have been ideal to have somewhere to have this in the spa area. The bar at night time was full of raucous men who were very very loud and some didn't really want to leave us alone. One of the pedicures that my friend received left a lot to be desired. However upon contacting the hotel, a full apology was received, a refund and a discount for a future treatment. Sometimes things can go wrong but in my view, how it is resolved makes a big difference.

All said and done we had a great time on our break - the cons did not ruin the time we spent together and we are already planning a return.
