Oakenwald Terrace
Ranked #1 of 1 Chatfield B&B and Inns
Reviewed 5 June 2013

My husband and I were on a long distance cycling trip, and stayed at the Oakenwald Terrace B&B en route through southern Minnesota. The hospitality and food were excellent, but we were most taken by the history of the house. It's not often you stay in a B&B that is run by the second generation of a family that grew up in the house. It also served as a residence for older citizens in its day. Each room and all the furnishings have a wonderful story to tell. Normally, I'm not much for Victorian style or a lot of knick knacks, but these all had so much meaning. We enjoyed a fabulous 4-course breakfast to fuel us on our day of cycling.

The Oakenwald B&B rents 2 homes (a few blocks away) bedroom by bedroom. This is a review of our 2 night stay at one of those 2 homes, not the B&B featured on their web site.

The B&B looked gorgeous - chock full of beautiful antiques and many many keyboards of all types and vintage. The house we stayed in was nowhere as ornate, thank goodness for our nerves. Our active pre-teen son running around a minefield of expensive antiques would have been too much for us to handle.

As it was, the modest house was extremely clean with a full kitchen. Very quiet non commercial residential neighborhood - we felt like locals, blocks off the main drag of this quiet town. No on-site manager, we had the run of the house. An older home but nicely re-finished with just a few minimal rough edges. Well worth the price.

Wonderful large old-fashioned screened-in front porch to enjoy the quiet evenings and a great place to eat breakfast. Full supermarket not too far away (closes at 9 PM, so shop early). It's a small town.

Easy paved bike trails in town surround the surprisingly large sports fields and complex. Good warm up for the kids before Lanesboro and the Root River bike trail, one of the big draws in this part of Minnesota. Lanesboro festival meant no last minute rooms anywhere in Lanesboro, Chatfield was the closest we could find rooms. And we were very happy we found this comfortable quiet place. We would stay here again next time we want to bike or tube Root River - very unlikely we'd be happy with the lesser accomodations in Lanesboro.

Kudos to the owners for putting together this very viable alternative to their B&B (which, incidentally, was sold out that weekend, anyhow.)
