I just returned from a three-night stay at the Ellery House's Thomas Wahl room. Cozy room oozing with charm -- with working gas fireplace, private bathroom (shower), view of the lake, bathrobes, fresh-cut flowers, minifridge.
But what made the trip was the personal touches. The breakfast is prepared with lots of care -- we had a different breakfast each morning. And as Jim (one of the owners) said, the goal is to fill you up so you don't have to spend money for lunch somewhere. The breakfast was incredible, and massive. Huge fruit plate, entree (the web site shows the recipes) and coffee, milk, juice, etc. More than two people could eat.
They also put out complimentary coffee and cookies, as well as port or sherry after dinner hours. A lot of care went into everything. It made our time at the Ellery House the highlight of our trip!
Jim and Joan will help you find activities in Duluth or the North Shore or leave you alone -- whatever you want. We took breakfast in the dining room and never wanted to leave because of the pleasant conversation and interesting anecdotes. We felt as if we made friends.
We got a view of two of the other rooms. All are decorated with the early 1900s era in mind to fit with the era of the Victorian three-story home. There's some history to it I'm sure Jim would love to tell you about.
Nice access to I-35 south or Hwy 61 north to the North Shore. Easy to find off the interstate.
