I stop at this museum every time I come to Duluth. It's free and I can always find something that I haven't seen before.

This is always an interesting place to visit. Very fitting for a city built on shipping.

This is right on the canal, so you won't miss any massive boats coming in, or seeing the lift bridge go up and down. This free museum is great for all ages. It is self led, very organized. You can go for half hour or half day. Little kids have a chance to steer the pretend boat. You'll see how folks traveled long ago, what their cabins looked. This gives a lot of information about Duluth ships and shipping. Right out the front door you may see a 1000 ft ore ship coming through the canal if you are lucky, in the museum you can learn about it. Don't miss this.

I didn't think anything was free anymore, but the museum was. It was full of artifacts from shipwrecks, replicas of early 20th century ship cabins, and other nautical displays such as a huge steam engine which was as tall as two storeys. They also have a mini-theatre section where you can sit and watch short films about the Great Lakes and their maritime history. A great asset to Duluth.

It is a small museum packed full of history of Lake Superior. We were so impressed the first time we toured the museum we bacame lifetime members. You walk at your own pace but staff can always help. Admission is free but would be worth $10 a ticket.
