“We felt very relaxed and at home”

We felt very relaxed and at home. The owners are knowledgeable about the area and had recommendations about restaurants that were great to eat at. They also know about activities that are family friendly as well as things that we could do as just a couple. We had a great time and can't wait to go back.

This was my 4th visit to Gardenwood and it won't be my last. First off the owners ( Pam & Lee ) are the most accommodating hosts that I have ever met. The cabins and motel rooms are always clean and the linens always fresh, the beds are very comfortable. The nights around the camp fire talking with other guests, Pam & Lee are some of my best memories. The location and view of Lake Superior are amazing and being only a short ride to Duluth make it that much better.
I am already looking forward to my next visit!

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights while exploing the north shore. The cabin was clean and comfortable. The owners were nice. The cabin was a little run down, but signs of improvments were everywhere. This seems to be a family run resort, and I feel it will only get better with time.

Room Tip: Bring your own coffee, and toiletry items.

This resort was built in the late 1920's to 1930. The new owners are doing a good job of restoring the cabins and motel, after years of ho-hum maintenance on the property. The resort has charm already, but the potential is even greater. Our little cabin was clean and comfortable with air conditioning (which was much appreciated due to the unusual for the North Shore hot and humid weather we had in mid-July). The owners were so nice and accommodating, and pets are allowed. The resort is right across the scenic drive from the McQuade Landing for boat, kayak and canoe launching. Good restaurants nearby. We'll definitely be back.

I can deal with old, rustic cabins, but the cabin we had was terrible. The kitchen area was old and gross, the futon was filthy and stained and then I opened up the bathroom door. Old nasty shower stall, stains on the floor, warped wood. It's a great location and nice folks, but unless this place is cleaned up we won't return.l

The thing to be aware of is that this is an old place. It was originally built in 1929 and the cabins look the same now as they did then. If you are into old places, don't mind that ricketty feeling, beds that aren't that firm, windows that don't open; then you will love this place. But if you are expecting it to be something special with 100% cotton sheets etc, you will be disappointed. Reading the other reviews, I didn't realize how old this place would be. It really feels like you are going to camp, not staying in a motel/resort.

We stayed in the front room of the motel. The best part was that we had a view of Lake Superior from the table. The room had 2 double beds, table and chairs, stove and refrig, bathroom. TV. Dishes, pot and pans. Linens.

Another "best" thing was the owner who was very helpful and showed us all the different rooms that were available so we could choose what we wanted. She was also helpful when I had trouble getting the internet. The internet did work fine, it was a problem on my computer.

I am happy to see that places like this still exist. So much of lakefront property has been developed by expensive hotels or high rises, so I was glad to stay here and feel like I was part of history.
