“Nice stay”
Reviewed 11 April 2014

Great location for a weekend trip to Spirit Mountain. Helpful staff. They accommodated our request for adjoining rooms and allowed us to use breakfast area for dinner that we ordered in. Decent décor, Negatives (a) not a huge deal, but real cheap looking closet door distracts from otherwise nice room, (b) sticky substance on arm of one room chair and tack on the floor, (c) pool area was way, way too warm (OK if you were in the pool, but miserable to sit in the area to watch the kids), We would stay here again for sure.

We made a quick three day weekend to ski Spirit and stayed at the Best Western. Everyone was very nice and helpful. We were able to get $17 - 5 hour passes from the hotel on friday and on saturday there is a deal for families - buy two tickets at regular price and get discount on second 2 so it was only $100 for 5 hours for 4 of us. This is better than the prices around Minneapolis. Breakfast was standard - a few warm proteins, cereal, waffles, toast, etc. Very clean and the staff from the front desk pitched in to keep things going when it got really busy - not sure I have ever seen that type of team work at hotel before. Room was clean - average size for 4 of us but we fit with all ski equipment. We are planning on making this a regular occurance as easy drive up from cities. Hotel is literallyj ust down the hill from Spirit so very easy to get to and from. Swimming pool clean - hot tub very hot - felt good after skiing.

We were really happy with this hotel. We were on the first floor, next to the front desk and near the pool. We found our room to be very clean and quiet. The breakfast in the morning was fantastic! There was make your own waffles, and hot items that rotated (while we were there we had make your own omelettes and breakfast potatoes one morning and scrambled eggs, sausage links and biscuits and gravy the next). We were also fans of the chocolate cookies served at the front desk too! The pool and hot tub area was very nice, however during our stay, there were a lot of teenagers in town for a robotics competition and they pretty much took over the area. We tried swimming our first night and were constantly hit with balls and were splashed constantly by teens cannon-balling into the pool and hot tub. I wish the staff would have been able to control this behavior, but I understand that their hands are tied. We had no problems with the internet and used it quite a bit. Although this is in the Spirit Mountain Area, it was a short drive into downtown Duluth and Canal Park. We would stay here again in an instant, the hotel was clean, quiet, the staff was very nice when we came into contact with them. We had a great stay!

We came on business and ended up in a snow storm so spent extra time in the hotel. It was a nice experience. The staff is very friendly and seem to go out of their way to meet our needs. Breakfast had a lot of variety. The pool was a perfect temperature for exercising. The internet worked well and was free! And the mattress was perfect! This would be a good place to bring kids as the staff is so accommodating and friendly.

So this is my second stay in 2 months. The first time I was unaware of any train tracks, middle of the night, woo woo! The second stay, I requested to be on the highway side (rather than the train tracks) and I was told there was no other rooms available, even though I requested the non-train side in my reservation.
As another reviewer mentioned, lots of active kids, I was on the second floor and kids were on the third running back and forth. I called the front desk, I was told that they would investigate, 15 minutes later of a track meet being held above me, I went up to find 6 kids running up and down the halls. No parents, no hotel staff... Laying in bed, you can hear every toilet flush, every sink with water gurgling down the pipes... Stay away, stay far away, there are much better hotels that actually paid for insulation, double pane windows, etc...
Never again, I guess this is why this was the only hotel still open when the rest of Duluth was sold-out...

Room Tip: Don't book a room on the train side, don't book a 1st or 2nd floor room as there is no noise...

Dear MAJ66,
Firstly, thank you for taking the time to share your experience during your stay at the Best Western Plus Spirit Mountain Duluth. We will be using the feedback you gave us to implement improvements to ensure we offer a better experience for our guests in the future.

On behalf of our entire team, I would like to apologize for not exceeding your expectations. As demonstrated by other reviews, this is not a typical experience for our guests. It is not often that we get a group that causes a disturbance for our other guests. It was recorded by our team that they did speak with this group and I apologize that this did not resolve the issue in this case. From my experience and feedback from frequent travelers that stay at our property, our rooms are typically no less quiet than other hotels, and a boisterous group is a rarity. As for the trains, I have contacted CN Railroad and they will look into the horn noise, but have assured me that the trains only sound for road crossings and emergencies. Since there are no crossings within 2 miles of the hotel, there should not be any train whistles nearby unless there is an emergency.

Thanks again for your comments. We are committed to do everything we can to ensure a restful and enjoyable stay for all our guests and will take proactive measures to prevent any disturbances.

Sincerely,
Deanna Gregorich, GM

We had problems with the hotel across the street at 11:00 at night and Best Western was great and had a room for us that was 1.32 cheaper. It was cleaner, very friendly staff, great breakfast. We were in Duluth for my daughter's 13th Birthday. The next time that I'm in Duluth, I would stay at this hotel again. Highly recommended!!!
