My grandson and I went to the zoo yesterday. Not many animals, but we did see plenty of a staff member with her t-shirt tied up to expose most of her belly...not appropriate.

While following up with reviewer “Nails777”, we determined and agreed that the inappropriately attired was NOT a zoo employee, but a teenage volunteer with the "Zoo Crew". Zoo Crew members spend 6 weeks of their summer volunteering at the zoo. I apologize for the inappropriateness of this young lady’s attire and thank you for bringing this isolated incident it to our attention. We have addressed it.

The Lake Superior Zoo is a cute little zoo. It is surrounded by woods and you feel like you are out in nature when you are touring it. Lots of interesting and unusual animals. It is big enough that it is worth the price of admission but small enough to do without exhausting the kids. Only drawbacks are that it could use more evenly dispersed bathroom facilities and air conditioning in the main building would be nice.

Thank you for your review. I am so glad to hear that you enjoyed yourselves and saw some of our unusual animals. Hopefully you acquainted yourself with the Pallas' cats and genet in our nocturnal exhibit. Both are quite unusual! We love it when families can visit us and not tire out the little ones (or their parents!). I think you'd agree that we pack a lot into our small 16 acre footprint.

My family and I have been to every zoo in MI and stopped on our vacation this summer to 3 zoos total and this was our favorite! Although the polar exhibit was closed and there weren't any elephants, rhinos, or giraffe the zoo was great! We were there right at opening when the animals were being fed so they were moving and active. They had a lot of animals and the scenery was awesome. We really enjoyed the walking trail to a waterfall and through the woods...the stroller was okay with it too! We had a membership from MI so our entry was free and there was no parking. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we "accidentally" spent about $70 at the gift shop! I would recommend this zoo to anyone.

Thank you for leaving your comments about your trip to our zoo. Our team is so pleased to hear that you enjoyed yourselves. The waterfall and historic Works Progress Administration (WPA) bridges are a favorite of many who take the time to walk the trail.

Oh a whim we visited the Lake Superior Zoo because we were camping in the area and looking for something to do (we have four kids under age 8). For the $62 we spent (admission and 5 min. "train" ride), we didn't really get any really good "zoo action." I mean, it seemed that what few animals were actually visible, they were sleeping or lounging in the way back corner of their exhibit. Many of the animals weren't even visible. This is noticeable when the zoo is small already. The kids seemed to have an ok time but it definitely wasn't a memorable experience. Last year we spent the same amount and had a first rate zoo experience at the Milwaukee Co. Zoo or paid nothing (FREE) to visit the Vilas Zoo in Madison. If you're a family of more than 3 people (we have 6), I suggest saving your money or spending it elsewhere.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments about your visit.

Many of the zoo's carnivores, such as our brown bears, cougar, snow leopard and Amur tiger greatly prefer Duluth winters over our summers. Their fur is what keeps them warm in the winter and they are easily over-heated in the summer. If your visited had occurred in the winter, you would have most likely been able to experience these, and others, in a more active state.

We brought our five and seven year old and they just loved everything. They are still at an age where they need to hold things and look at things up close and this is what we found that we could do with them at this zoo. The staff was very warm and friendly and we had a great time and we will be back!!!
