“Better by Comparison”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2014

This was a good choice for Saturday night dinner in Canal Park for a couple who didn't want to eat at one of the sports bar type restaurants. The restaurant had a good crowd, a nice conversational buzz, a ready table, lots of windows, attentive service, and good food. In a more competitive location, it might not stand out - but for what it is where it is - we had a good experience and were happy with our choice.

“Poor Service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 May 2014

We were a group of four just stopping in for a beverage. A person sitting at the bar, assumably an employee went to dry some glasses and took water to some tables then back to eating her food and having a beer. While the staff person that helped us, the service was poor at best. The gal at the bar was not eager to help us bit helped herself quite a bit.

“Nice place...interesting food and drinks”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 May 2014 via mobile

We went here for a dinner and were impressed with the service and the atmosphere. They had nice big booths to fit a group, and really interesting drink menus! Lots of things you wouldn't see elsewhere. The food was OK, but wouldn't fit everyone's taste so check out the menu before making a plan to eat here. It is a nice addition to this area though and offers some unique choices for people who would like to try something new and not as standard but well prepared.

Every time we come we are pleasantly surprised at the quality of the sandwiches and variety available. Don't be afraid to try something different you won't be disappointed.

“Was so much better before it changed hands.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 March 2014

We travel to Duluth often enough to know where we like to eat. In years past, the Lake Avenue Café could be counted on for a unique, tasty meal. Our trip there on Sunday, March 23, 2014 was disappointing on many scores. As my husband noted, the waitress did not appear to be 'into it". We had to ask her what the specials were and she was quite lackadaisical about getting back to us for our order. This was around 6:30 p.m. on a Sunday night - they were not busy.

I had the tilapia which was tasty enough, but cold (not even warm, mind you), served with about 2 tablespoons of a decent coleslaw, 1 red potato and three pickles. For $19.00 I was not thrilled. My husband had the falafel, which he deemed 'decent' and our daughter the Faux Pho which looked to be a serving for a child (she is 29!) and less than great.

There was no follow-up from the waitress except to toss dessert menus our way (no thank you - we went to the 'Amazing Grace' bakery downstairs for amazing goodies).

It had been a while since we'd been to Lake Avenue Café. I understand the business changed hands and, sadly, our experience this past weekend felt as though the new owners don't quite have the same knack the others did.

Sorry to be so negative, but the meals were pricey and not that good.
