I just spent 4 days at Embudu. I'd heard good things about the dive operation there and also I wanted somewhere that wasn't too far from the airport and was reasonably priced for a solo travellers. Embudu didn't disappoint.

The boat transfer from the airport took around 30 mins. This is not the most luxurious resort in the Maldives but the standard was more than adequate. I had no complaints about the accommodation; a big comfortable double bed, hot water and air conditioning.

The food was plentiful and varied. The barbecue night on the Sunday evening was excellent. I paid an additional $29 per day for all inclusive drinks, although as you have to pay this for the full duration of your stay, it's only worthwhile if you are going to drink alcohol every night.

The diving was exceptionally good and efficiently managed. Most days there was 1 boat dive in the morning, and 1 in the afternoon, with a choice of 4 different sites, plus diving on the house reef. On the Saturday, we went on a full day trip to a more remote location in the south of the atoll. The unlimited diving option for EUR340 is a good option for people who are going to do more than 10 dives.

My only criticism of the dive centre is they insisted I did a check dive even though I had dived the week before I arrived. Still, I would add that some of the dive sites they use have extremely strong currents e.g. Embudu Express, although they always offer an easy dive at another site for people who don't fancy the more extreme diving.

The house reef is quite pleasant and I saw manta rays, sharks and turtles while snorkelling. Note that on this island there is not much else to do except dive, snorkel, eat and sleep. There is no swimming pool.

The only thing that disappoints me about the Maldives generally is that everyone is given bottled water to drink and the amount of plastic waste this creates is horrendous. Clearly it's not an easy issue to resolve, but they could maybe start by giving people bottles that can be refilled from a water dispenser.

Overall, an excellent place to stay for people who don't want to pay the earth and are keen on diving.

Room Tip: They were all close to the beach!

This was our 4th visit to the Maldives but first to Embudu, and it really is a gem.
As others have said if you are after luxury this is not the place for you but for peaceand simplicity it is perfect.
We travelled with Thomson ,the flight was fine apart from a 4 hour delay! transfer was smooth.
We were allocated room 39 which in my opinion was one of the best locations.right next to the sand spit which is incredible. The sunsets from here were the best I've ever seen,
The room was "tired" but clean and air con was fine.Very comfortable patio furniture.
The bar and dining room were just a couple of minutes walk away.
They have both been recently refurbished and were cool and modernThe bar staff were terrific and always ready for a laugh.
Food was excellent veg and salads very good, however I didn't find some of the dining room staff very friendly, this could be because there was only 6 English people there the first week. The snorkling is very good and the coral garden was good for nervous snorklers like me!
My husband went on 3 snorkling trips and swam with Mantas every time.
All in all Embudu is relaxed and unpretentious.I would return in a heartbeat.

We have traveled to the hotel with a 3 year old. First of all, you need to understand what you are getting - the island is small -it will take you 15-20 minutes to go around it. There are no extra things, no pools, no TVs, spa services were below average, you have to take upgraded room only to have hot water and a conditioner in your room! BUT, knowing that, and accepting it, everything else is great - the views, the territory gets cleaned every morning, the food is included, but served within certain periods of time. Wasn't a problem for us, even when smb was sleeping during a food time, we packed a sandwich and brought it home. Another plus was reasonably short sail from main island, which can make a big difference, if you had a long flight before that. The food wasn't smth extraordinary, but OK, with at least two choices of main dish, vegetables, so we were not hungry. You could order fish and chips, ice cream or other treats any other time, when you felt hungry. One big problem, that we saw there was boredom, there were couples that came for their honeymoon, and were bored to death by the 3rd day. As for my family, we found this a great time to read, and enjoy each other, our beach felt like a private beach, and we could stay inside, with open door, while our child played outside in the sand. Priceless...Being there in the beginning of august, every other day we had a rainstorms, but they were warm,,,again, for some could be a problem, no for us. Water stayed gorgeous, warm, transparent, and there are little sharks all over.

Just got back from spending our second visit to this Island (Have also been to Five others) over the New Year period. As before the staff were very friendly and helpfull, our waiter in the restaurant was Moosa (may not be spealt correctly) who was exceptional.
Bar staff were very much on the ball as well making sure your glass was always full. New Year Gala food was out of this world, and the celebrations went well even though Rain tried to ruin things. All Inclusive is very good and 1.5ltr Bottled water is included (Some islands AI doesnt), Plugs are 3 pin round although the Air Conditioning unit in our room was 3 pin UK style. We stayed in room 31 which is ideally placed near a sand spit which now has a mini lagoon making a safe area for children to play. There are two main beaches and some land rooms have to make do with smaller parts of the beach, would reccomend taking Lilo's or Beach towels as sunbeds were in short supply near our room just to be safe. The land rooms (Superior) are looking a little tired now and could do with being updated (the island is very busy making this quite hard to achieve) although they appear to have two (Rooms 58-59) which have been updated to a high standard from what I can see although the down-side is the Generators are behind so not sure of noise in the rooms. The Snorkeling is very good here with a good drop off from left of the jetty by the Water bungalows and a good coral garden to right of the Dive jetty. You can technically snorkel around the island but not attempted by us. We dont dive so cannot comment of the dive school but it always appeared busy which must be good. Overall this is a very good Maldive island at a reasonable price and would reccomend as somewhere to visit.

We have just returned from 2 weeks on the Island of Embudu and we thought we would give you a little guide as to what you need to get by on this island….

We landed in the Maldives at about 2pm after a 4 hour delay in Manchester. We were given a £5 voucher each for food which in an airport is not a lot. Do make the mistake we made though and leave it late to get food. We went into one of the lounges until 5.30pm and thought we would be ok to get food after but this was a mistake as at around 6pm Frankie and Benny’s was closing and the other restaurant had pretty much run out of food. The flight was fine and due to a few beers so we were able to sleep for a good part of the flight.

This was our 2nd trip to the Maldives (we visited Vilamendoo the 1st time) and on this occasion we travelled by boat to the island. We were on our way to the Island within 30 minutes of landing which was brilliant after our delay. It’s a very easy process at the airport where you are directed to your relevant tour operator and then directed to the area where you need to catch your boat.

It took around 40 mins to reach the Island that is not far from Male. We were on the beach within 2 hours of landing. Now Embudu is a very different Island to Vilamendoo. At Vilamendoo we pretty much had an area of beach to ourselves and Embudu we didn’t. We were situated in room 33 that is very close to one of the largest pieces of beech on the Island. There is plenty of room for people to sunbathe and for the most part it was blissfully quiet. At this area of beech its great to snorkel from as there is a big drop off about 10ft from the beach. There is plenty to see here with Turtles, Sharks and Rays. You can swim around the whole the Island in just over an hour but be aware of the currents that are very strong in places. We had good weather during our stay but did experience some heavy rain fall but this never lasted for long. I would defiantly recommend high factors of cream as on a few days there was not a cloud in the sky and it was extremely hot. I would also advise to cover up while snorkelling as its so easy to burn.

They do not offer a towel service here so you will need to bring your own towels which is a pain. We took one each but for a two week stay two each would probably have been better. The sun lounges on this island are the worst I have ever used. They are very uncomfortable and useless if you want to tan your back. They do have a few of the more traditionally sun lounges but they do not have the padded mats on them so are equally uncomfortable if you only have a towel with you. Many of the German and French tourists’s opted to bring lilos with them. If you are thinking of doing this bring one with you, you do not want to be paying $22 for a lilo as this is the price of one in the shop.

The food was fantastic and we were lucky enough to have a table to ourselves for the whole two weeks. The food is very mixed and there was always something for everyone. Our waiter was called Mohammed and he was very nice and made every effort to assist us. On the last night he dressed our table up with flowers and sand designs which really did make us smile. We went full board and were astounded at the prices of drinks. If you are a big drinker then I would advise you to upgrade to A/L which is $28 a day pp. On one night we had 4 drinks and its cost close to $50 so stuck to the water from then on in. I mean $9 for two bottles of Sprite is extortionate. There is bottled water brought to your room twice a day and left in a flask.

Our room was nice and basic and what we expected. I would worry if I was 5ft tall though as the wardrobe rail is very high. Our room was cleaned twice a day and the bed turned over in the evening. There is a washing line on all the patios areas but take your own pegs as the ones on the lines are full of rust and a couple of my tops were ruined.

I would recommend that your take some form of insect replant if you are prone to be being bitten. During our first week we thought we had got lucky and escaped the mosquitoes but they popped up on our 2nd week and were out in force. There is a little bit of wildlife on the island with fruit bats and lizards and the island also has three cats which live near room 29. If I ever went again I would defo take them some cat biscuits so if you’re a cat lover think of the three cats and bring some whiskers instead of that extra pair of shoes!! As for shoes you don’t need any. Maybe just bring a pair of flip flops. We spent most of the holiday in bare feet but beware that there are shells, bits of coral and stones around the Island.

During our stay we were probably one of five English couples on the Island which we didn’t mind. There were lots of German and French tourists. We found all the staff helpful and nice. I hired a mask from the dive school for a few days and the guys at the dive school seemed nice enough.. The Island is a great place for a recharge and 99% of the people there seemed to have the same idea. I would recommend the Maldives to anyone that wants to go sit and relax and do very little for two weeks. The Maldives is not some where I would recommend anyone to bring young children as there is nothing for them to do. All in all we had a great holiday but will be looking to go to another Island on our 3rd visit to the Maldives.

We visited the Maldives for the second time in November 2010 and were anxious that moving from a 4 to 3 star AI deal would mean a drop in standards in some key areas.
What we found at Embudu Village was a relatively unspoilt island with a great bar and a very good standard of food.
The views from the island are as good as anywhere. The ocean is as warm and inviting as anywhere and if you love snorkelling and diving you will struggle to find a better spot to base yourself. The local reefs are excellent and there are some great dives very close by.
The rooms are basic and reminded me of the Greek islands but guys this is the Maldives...you don't spend a great deal of time sat in your room and if you do save yourself a couple of grand and an 11 hour journey and stay in Europe.

This island is a real little gem ideal for divers, snorkelling and doing nothing- paradise.

If you can't do without satelite tv and tea making facilities then don't come here.

If you love the Indian ocean, paradise views, beautiful quiet beaches excellent food and friendly staff - all on a budget then check out Embudu Village.
