Our visit started out great with a quick trip to the Cascade State Park Headquarters. The Park Ranger on duty was very friendly and helpful and gave us a nice overview of the different hiking trails and also told us the best spot for a picnic lunch. We hiked the 3.5 mile Lookout Mountain Loop trail. The trail starts near the first cascading waterfall and continues up the river where you can see the other waterfalls. There is a nice foot bridge over the falls that allows for a great view of the river and waterfalls. The trail leads you to the top of Lookout Mountain where you have a great view of the forest and Lake Superior. The trail to Lookout Mountain is signed and the trail includes a steep climb to the summit.

The picnic spots are clean and are a quarter-mile south of Park Headquarters along Highway 61. The picnic tables are just a few yards from Lake Superior.

Enjoyed hiking in this park. Trail signs are not well marked, but with a map from the office, you can navigate pretty easily.

This park had some tricky parking areas but definately worth the stop. We enjoyed walking up the paths to see each of the falls and taking some amazing photos. Then we crossed the road, sat on the rocks watching the waves and some men fishing.

Cascade River State Park is another gem of the North Shore. An easy stop, with parking right off the highway so you don’t actually have to drive into the state park (and don’t need a pass). The largest of the waterfall is a fairly easy, short, 300 yard hike in. But don’t stop there! If you walk just a bit further up the trail you will see the best part of the park, a series of cascades that are spectacular. At one point you can see five fairly nice sized waterfalls. Don’t miss this! There is a bridge to cross over and you can return to your car on the other side of the river for some more fantastic views. Overall not a very long hike, maybe a mile tops.
