“Great place, poor kitchen”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 October 2013

Room was great with fireplace, jacuzzi and basic but ok bath room.
We tried the restaurant and were very disappointed. The only good thing was the Italian wine. Food and service were poor in comparison to price.
Location is great. Great opportunities to hike nearby. Beautiful nature.
Nice fitness facilities.
Nice "loan a film" opportunity.

We have stayed a dozen times over the years and have never been disappointed. Nice to park, put your skis on and head down the hill right from the parking lot. Close to Papa Charlies restaurant. Usually have rooms available last minute.

We have stayed here several times and each time the place becomes a little less appealing. The maintenance is really starting to slip. We had a hot tub right across from our room, which was handy, but the hot tub finish is starting to bubble and the jets didn't work. The sauna was pitch black because the lights were out. If you travel with a dog, you are limited to the hotel style rooms in the main lodge and they still tack on $60 bucks in pet fees if you stay two nights. At that point, you can get a better value just staying at one of the local motels.

We would go back to this lodge in a heartbeat. Super comfy bed ( we got a king bd with whirlpool and mtn view), upgraded furnishings and bath. Whirlpool tub is more of a one person tub, not two, and prices were ok, a little pricey. Overall a great, clean hotel we wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

First thing we did was go in the spa!! The hottub was nice n big n it worked better than the other. :)) the bottom of the hottub was nice and exfoliating for the rough spots on my feet.
One main problem was "there's more morons around than you'd ever imagine" and "infact, there's morons everywhere" being preached by drunkin locals ruining our wilderness experience/ dinner.
The other major issue revolved around the sharp edges randomly scattered throughout the bar and the hottub. There's a lot of places to stub ur extremities.
Front desk staff were both amazingly helpful and polite. I'd b back sooner than later if it wasn't so close to Eagle Ridge resort.

Stayed 2 nights in Alpine Condo which is on the 3rd floor. Had a special rate of 50% off the second night. These are nice units with a loft having a queen bed and two bunk beds, two full bathrooms. Our unit had a nice view of Lake Superior (in the distance) and the poplar river waterfalls. Room was clean. Bed was firm but OK. The front desk was nice enough to give us charcoal and lighter fluid to use in one of the grills located in the common area near the pool. I had thought these units had a gas grill on the deck but I was mistaken...it's against fire code. They have a fire each night and provide all that is needed for smores for those interested...nice touch. There weren't many staying here after the labor day holiday which was nice to have it so quiet. Had a good experience. Good value during the off-season, weekday stay.

Room Tip: Alpine Room 122A has the best view of Lake Superior...is also poolside.

We booked a room for a wedding, and couldn't be happier with our experience! The room was very large, very clean, and very comfortable. Not inexpensive, but also not out of the ordinary for this class of lodge. The bed was great!

The lodge and resort caters to the ski crowd, and I'm sure it is perfect for them, although I'm not a skier.

We only have one caviat: there is no elevator; you enter on the second floor, so if your room is on the first or third floor, be prepared to tote your gear up or down stairs.

Caribou Highlands is located near the Lutsen ski facilities, rather than on Lake Superior. When travelling on the North Shore, we prefer to stay lakeside. However, we didn't feel like we missed out on anything staying at Caribou!

Room Tip: In the winter, I'd suggest getting a hillside room on the second or third floor.
